Chapter 12 - The Woman in the Photograph

The attack began online at 6:12 the next morning.

A financial news site published a story questioning whether Elena Voss had secretly manipulated public companies while concealing her controlling interests.

By 6:30, three television networks repeated it.

By seven, social media had transformed Elena from humiliated victim into mysterious billionaire puppet master.

Damian watched from his penthouse.

For the first time in days, he smiled.

Then his phone rang.

Elias.

“You’re enjoying yourself.”

“A little.”

“Don’t.”

Damian’s smile faded.

“Why?”

“Because your name appears in the next story.”

“What story?”

Elias hung up.

Thirty minutes later, Damian found out.

Documents had leaked showing payments from Cross Capital into Northstar Advisory.

Veronica’s name appeared beside his.

Damian threw the tablet across the room.

Meanwhile, Elena ignored the headlines.

She was studying something else.

An old photograph.

Jonathan had found it inside the archive.

Her father stood beside Elias and a woman Elena did not recognize.

On the back was written:

MARTIN.

ELIAS.

MARGARET.

FIRST OFFICE.

“Who is Margaret?” Elena asked.

Jonathan shook his head.

They searched old employment files.

Nothing.

Corporate filings.

Nothing.

Then an archived newspaper article appeared.

Margaret Shaw.

Co-founder of Voss Strategic Partners.

Elena stared.

“Co-founder?”

The name had disappeared from every later company record.

They searched deeper.

Margaret left the company in 2001 after a confidential settlement.

One year later, she died.

Her shares were transferred to a trust.

The beneficiary’s identity was sealed.

Elena felt a chill.

“Find the trust.”

Jonathan did.

The trust had never been dissolved.

Its administrator changed several times.

The current administrator was a private firm in Connecticut.

The firm’s controlling partner was Elias Grant’s daughter.

Elena looked again at Margaret’s photograph.

“She owned part of the company.”

Jonathan nodded slowly.

“And if those shares still exist…”

“They could change the entire vote.”

A notification appeared on Elena’s screen.

Her team had found Margaret Shaw’s death certificate.

Jonathan read it first.

Then stopped.

“What?”

He turned the monitor toward Elena.

Margaret had died leaving one surviving child.

A son.

Elena read the name.

Damian Cross.
