Chapter 10 - The Broadcast

At 8:42 p.m., every major financial channel interrupted programming.

Nathan sat behind a plain table inside a rented conference room.

Grace sat beside him.

Margaret sat on the other side.

Elias stood behind the cameras.

Lily was in another room with Elena.

Nathan had refused every request to put Lily on television.

She was his daughter.

Not evidence.

Not leverage.

Not a symbol.

A child.

The anchor introduced Nathan cautiously.

“Mr. Cole, your board suspended you this morning.”

Nathan nodded.

“Yes.”

“You are currently facing allegations of attempted child abduction.”

“Yes.”

“And now you claim members of your own family and the Vale family participated in a decades-long conspiracy.”

Nathan looked directly into the camera.

“I’m not claiming it.”

“I’m documenting it.”

Elias placed Ledger Nine on the table.

Margaret stiffened.

Nathan opened the first page.

He did not reveal victim medical details.

He revealed payment codes.

Dates.

Corporate accounts.

Judicial decisions.

He showed how money flowed from Cole subsidiaries into Vale political foundations.

The anchor’s expression changed.

Nathan continued.

“My father participated.”

The room went silent.

Grace looked at him.

Nathan did not soften it.

“Charles Cole used my family’s company to intimidate people.”

“He helped conceal the existence of my daughter.”

“He participated in actions that endangered Grace Bennett.”

The stock ticker beneath Nathan’s face turned red.

Cole Meridian fell eleven percent.

Nathan kept speaking.

“He also helped build the structure I am exposing tonight.”

Another three percent.

Elias whispered.

“Fourteen.”

Nathan did not stop.

Margaret spoke next.

“My husband, Samuel Vale, is alive.”

The anchor nearly dropped his notes.

Margaret looked at the camera.

“His death was fabricated six years ago.”

“He has continued operating a private blackmail network.”

Nathan watched her.

Every confession burned another bridge.

Margaret knew there would be no return.

The anchor leaned forward.

“Mrs. Vale, are you confessing to crimes?”

“Yes.”

The room became silent.

Margaret continued.

“I threatened Grace Bennett.”

“I participated in concealing her pregnancy from Nathan Cole.”

“I pressured public employees to assist.”

Grace’s hands tightened.

Margaret did not look at her.

Nathan noticed tears on Margaret’s face.

She kept speaking.

“And I protected my daughter after she assaulted Grace.”

The anchor froze.

Nathan turned.

Margaret looked at him.

“That part is mine.”

Nathan said nothing.

Margaret faced the camera again.

“Victoria should have been arrested.”

“I used influence to stop it.”

Somewhere in America, political careers began collapsing.

Nathan’s phone vibrated.

SAMUEL.

He had expected it.

He answered on speaker.

Samuel’s voice filled the studio.

“You always needed an audience.”

Nathan stared into the camera.

“Where’s Victoria?”

Samuel laughed.

“Concerned about your fiancée?”

“No.”

“Then why ask?”

“Because murder is still murder.”

Samuel became quiet.

Then Victoria screamed in the background.

Grace flinched.

Margaret stood.

“Samuel!”

Samuel laughed.

“Hello, Maggie.”

Margaret’s face went white.

“Let her go.”

“You chose the Cole boy over your own daughter.”

“I’m choosing her now.”

“Too late.”

Nathan leaned toward the phone.

“You want Lily.”

Samuel stopped laughing.

Nathan continued.

“You have four hours.”

“No.”

Samuel’s voice hardened.

“You have one.”

Nathan looked at Elias.

Samuel continued.

“Bring Lily to Albany.”

“Come alone.”

“If I see police, Victoria dies.”

“If I see reporters, Victoria dies.”

“If I see Margaret, Victoria dies.”

Nathan glanced toward the television camera.

“You already see reporters.”

Samuel laughed.

“Cute.”

Then Nathan heard a metallic click.

Victoria sobbed.

Samuel spoke softly.

“Fifty-nine minutes.”

The call ended.

Margaret grabbed Nathan.

“You have to go.”

Nathan looked at her.

“He will kill Victoria.”

Grace stood.

“Nathan.”

He turned.

Grace knew what he was thinking.

“No.”

Nathan said nothing.

“You are not taking Lily.”

“I’m not.”

Grace exhaled.

Nathan looked at Elias.

“Prepare the replica.”

Margaret frowned.

“What replica?”

Elias opened a case.

Inside was a biometric training mannequin head used by Cole Meridian security labs.

Margaret stared.

“That won’t fool Samuel.”

“It doesn’t need to.”

Nathan removed a small vial.

Grace frowned.

“What is that?”

“Lily’s discarded hair from the DNA test.”

Grace stiffened.

Nathan immediately explained.

“The scanner reads multiple markers.”

“Hair gives us one.”

“The replica gives facial dimensions.”

“Her hospital sample gives DNA.”

Margaret stared.

“You have her hospital sample?”

Elias nodded.

“Chain-of-custody duplicate.”

Nathan continued.

“We only need thirty seconds.”

“For what?”

“To access the archive before Samuel.”

Margaret shook her head.

“You don’t know where the server is.”

Nathan looked at her.

“You do.”

Margaret stared.

Then slowly nodded.

They left the broadcast running.

Elias continued releasing documents in scheduled batches.

Nathan, Grace, Margaret, and Elena traveled toward Albany separately.

Nathan reached the disaster recovery facility at 10:41.

He carried the biometric case.

No Lily.

Samuel’s men searched him.

They found no weapon.

Nathan entered alone.

The underground facility looked like a bank vault.

Rows of servers glowed behind glass.

Samuel waited beside Victoria.

She was tied to a chair.

Her face was bruised.

Nathan stopped.

Victoria looked at him.

Her eyes filled.

“You came.”

Nathan’s expression remained cold.

“I came for the archive.”

Victoria flinched.

Samuel laughed.

“Still Charles’s son.”

Nathan looked at him.

“You don’t know anything about me.”

“I know you brought the child.”

Nathan lifted the case.

Samuel’s smile widened.

Victoria started shaking her head.

“Nathan, don’t.”

Samuel struck her.

Nathan’s fists clenched.

“Open it.”

Nathan placed the case on the scanner table.

He opened it.

Samuel stared.

His smile vanished.

The replica sat inside.

“You think this is funny?”

Nathan pressed the hair sample into the scanner.

Green light.

Partial match.

He inserted the DNA cartridge.

Green.

Samuel stared.

Nathan aligned the replica face.

Green.

The system flashed.

BIOMETRIC AUTHORIZATION 83%.

Samuel laughed.

“Not enough.”

Nathan looked toward Victoria.

“Correct.”

Samuel frowned.

Nathan continued.

“That’s why we need the maternal line.”

Samuel’s expression changed.

Nathan looked toward the door.

Grace entered.

Samuel’s men had captured her exactly as planned.

Samuel smiled.

“You brought the mother.”

Grace looked at Nathan.

They had never agreed she would do this.

Nathan felt rage and fear simultaneously.

Grace’s expression told him to continue.

Samuel pushed her toward the scanner.

“Hand.”

Grace placed her palm on the glass.

The system flashed.

96%.

Samuel frowned.

“Still insufficient.”

Nathan looked at Victoria.

She had gone pale.

Nathan understood before Samuel did.

The final genetic authorization was not paternal.

Not maternal.

It required a witness from the Vale line.

Nathan looked at Margaret’s daughter.

“Victoria.”

Samuel’s face changed.

Victoria whispered.

“No.”

Samuel grabbed her.

He dragged her toward the scanner.

“Hand.”

Victoria fought.

“No!”

Samuel pressed her hand against the glass.

The system turned green.

100%.

ACCESS GRANTED.

Every server door unlocked.

Samuel smiled.

Then every screen changed.

EVELYN COLE ARCHIVE RELEASE PROTOCOL.

Samuel froze.

Nathan stared.

Grace whispered.

“What is that?”

A video appeared.

Evelyn Cole sat in front of a camera.

Alive.

Older.

Tired.

But unmistakable.

Nathan stopped breathing.

His mother looked directly into the lens.

“If this recording is playing, Samuel Vale has successfully forced both bloodlines to open the archive.”

Samuel lunged for the controls.

Nothing responded.

Evelyn continued.

“That means Nathan has found Grace.”

Nathan’s eyes filled.

“And it means my granddaughter is alive.”

Grace covered her mouth.

Evelyn smiled faintly.

“Hello, Lily.”

Nathan began to cry.

He did not care who saw.

Evelyn continued.

“Nathan, there is one final truth you need to know.”

Samuel screamed.

“Turn it off!”

The screens ignored him.

Evelyn looked directly at her son across twelve years.

“The man who killed me was not Samuel Vale.”

Nathan went completely still.

Samuel stopped.

Grace stared.

Evelyn continued.

“Samuel imprisoned me.”

“Margaret threatened me.”

“Charles betrayed me.”

“But none of them delivered the final poison.”

Nathan’s pulse hammered.

His mother took a shaky breath in the recording.

“The person who killed me is someone you trust.”

Nathan looked toward Grace.

Victoria.

Samuel.

No.

Evelyn whispered.

“His name is Elias Ward.”

May you like

Nathan felt the floor disappear beneath him.
