Chapter 14 - Charles

Nathan stared at the photograph until his vision blurred.
Charles Cole.
Older.
Thinner.
But unmistakable.
His father had died of pancreatic cancer four years earlier.
Nathan had held his hand.
Nathan had watched the monitor stop.
Nathan had signed the cremation authorization.
Nathan had scattered part of his ashes beside Evelyn’s memorial.
Yet Noah pointed innocently at the reflected man.
“Grandpa Sam.”
Grace looked sick.
Nathan crouched beside Noah.
“When does he visit?”
“Sometimes.”
“What does he say?”
“He asks if I remember Mommy.”
Grace began crying silently.
Noah noticed.
“Are you Mommy?”
Grace froze.
Nathan’s chest tightened.
Grace crouched.
Her entire body trembled.
“Yes.”
Noah studied her.
“You look like my pictures.”
Grace nodded.
“I’m sorry I wasn’t here.”
Noah frowned.
“Grandpa said you didn’t want me.”
Grace’s face shattered.
Nathan stepped forward.
Noah looked frightened.
Nathan stopped.
Grace whispered.
“That isn’t true.”
Noah stared.
“I wanted you every second.”
“I didn’t know where you were.”
Noah’s eyes filled.
“Why?”
Grace struggled to answer.
Nathan crouched beside her.
“Because bad adults lied.”
Noah looked at Nathan.
“Are you my dad?”
Nathan swallowed.
“Yes.”
Noah considered this.
“Lily says you’re funny.”
Nathan froze.
Grace looked at him.
“Lily?”
Noah nodded.
“She sends me messages.”
Grace stared.
“What messages?”
Noah pulled out a child’s tablet.
A private chat application opened.
Lily’s name appeared.
Grace took the tablet.
Messages had been exchanged for six months.
Lily could barely type.
Most were voice recordings.
Nathan pressed one.
Lily’s small voice played.
“Hi Noah, Mommy says I don’t have a brother but I think maybe I do.”
Grace covered her mouth.
Nathan stared.
How had Lily known?
Another recording.
“A man showed me your picture.”
Nathan felt cold.
Noah whispered.
“Grandpa Sam.”
The same person had been communicating with both children.
Creating a bond secretly.
Why?
Nathan scrolled.
One message had been sent from Noah’s account three days earlier.
COME TO DADDY’S HOUSE SOON.
That was why Lily recognized Nathan.
Someone had been preparing both children to meet him.
Grace looked at Nathan.
“Whoever this is wanted the truth exposed.”
“Or wanted the children together.”
Nathan stood.
Elena called.
“I’m running facial analysis.”
Nathan waited.
“It is Charles.”
Grace’s eyes widened.
Nathan shook his head.
“No.”
Elena continued.
“Probability ninety-seven percent.”
Nathan looked away.
Elias spoke through the phone.
“There is one possibility.”
Nathan turned.
“What?”
“Charles had an identical brother.”
Nathan frowned.
“My father was an only child.”
“That is what your grandfather told the public.”
Nathan stared.
Elias continued.
“Your grandmother gave birth to twins.”
“One disappeared from family records.”
Nathan laughed bitterly.
“Of course there’s another hidden child.”
Grace almost smiled despite everything.
Elias continued.
“I found sealed adoption records years ago.”
“Name?”
“Daniel.”
Nathan looked at the photograph.
“Daniel Cole.”
“Yes.”
“He would be Charles’s identical twin.”
“Where is he?”
Elias hesitated.
“I thought he died as an infant.”
Nathan looked at Noah.
“No.”
He closed his eyes.
“In this family, nobody stays dead.”
They brought Noah and his foster mother to a secure federal location.
Nathan refused to remove Noah permanently until a court resolved custody.
Grace agreed.
The separation nearly destroyed her.
Noah hugged her before leaving.
It was awkward.
Careful.
But real.
Grace cried in the car for twenty minutes.
Nathan did not interrupt.
Eventually she whispered.
“I missed everything.”
Nathan stared out the windshield.
“So did I.”
Grace looked at him.
Nathan continued.
“But we found him.”
She nodded.
“They stole two children.”
“Yes.”
Grace’s face hardened.
“They don’t get another day.”
Nathan looked at her.
He recognized something new.
Not fear.
War.
They traced Daniel Cole through old records.
A sealed file showed Daniel had been raised under another surname.
Daniel Mercer.
Helen Mercer had notarized Nathan’s forged signature.
The dead notary from Cole Meridian Legal.
Nathan understood.
“She was his wife.”
Elias nodded.
“Daniel married the notary.”
“That’s how he accessed the trust.”
“Yes.”
“Why pretend to be Samuel?”
“To control the children without exposing the Cole connection.”
Grace whispered.
“Where is Daniel now?”
Elena traced an old property.
A cabin in Maine.
The same region where Evelyn found Grace.
Nathan felt the pieces align.
Daniel had been there.
Watching.
Maybe helping.
Maybe manipulating everyone.
They arrived at the cabin after dark.
No lights.
Nathan entered first.
The interior was clean.
Recent.
Photographs covered one wall.
Evelyn.
Charles.
Grace.
Nathan.
Lily.
Noah.
Victoria.
Margaret.
Samuel.
Lines connected each person.
Dates.
Arrows.
Nathan stared.
“This is his entire operation.”
Grace pointed.
“Look.”
A photograph of Evelyn and Daniel together.
They were smiling.
Nathan turned it over.
My brother took everything from me.
Evelyn gave me a reason not to become him.
Nathan felt sick.
Daniel and Evelyn had known each other.
Another letter lay beneath it.
Nathan opened it.
Dear Daniel,
If I fail, protect the children.
Do not tell Nathan until Charles is dead.
Do not trust Samuel.
Do not trust Margaret.
And please, do not let revenge become your reason for living.
Evelyn.
Nathan stared.
Grace whispered.
“Your mother trusted him.”
Nathan looked around the cabin.
“He ignored the last sentence.”
A floorboard creaked behind them.
Nathan turned.
An old man stood in the doorway.
Charles’s face.
But not Charles.
Daniel.
He held no weapon.
He looked at Nathan.
“You have Evelyn’s eyes.”
Nathan’s fists clenched.
Daniel smiled sadly.
“And Charles’s anger.”
Grace stepped forward.
“You stole my son.”
Daniel’s face changed.
“No.”
“You watched him.”
“Yes.”
“You let me believe he was dead.”
“No.”
Grace lunged.
Nathan caught her.
Daniel did not move.
“I didn’t know Samuel had taken him until after the Hastings fire.”
Grace stopped.
“Then why didn’t you return him?”
“Because Samuel was watching you.”
“That is not an answer.”
“I was trying to keep both children alive.”
Grace’s voice broke.
“By lying to them?”
Daniel looked ashamed.
“Yes.”
Nathan stepped forward.
“Why did you place Grace in my house?”
Daniel smiled faintly.
“That was me.”
“Why?”
“Because Samuel’s network was preparing to move against Lily.”
“So you put her closer to Victoria?”
“I put her closer to you.”
Nathan stared.
Daniel continued.
“You were the only person powerful enough to break the pact.”
“You manipulated Lily into recognizing me.”
“Yes.”
“You manipulated Noah.”
“Yes.”
“You forged trust records.”
“Yes.”
“You sent me clues.”
“Yes.”
“Martin?”
Daniel’s face hardened.
“No.”
Nathan studied him.
“Who shot Martin?”
“Samuel.”
“Benjamin?”
“Samuel’s people.”
“Hospital attack?”
“Samuel.”
Nathan shook his head.
“Too convenient.”
Daniel smiled sadly.
“You’ve finally learned.”
“Never accept the first complete story.”
Nathan walked closer.
“Why now?”
Daniel looked at the wall.
“Because the trust deadline arrived.”
“No.”
Nathan shook his head.
“You could have exposed this years ago.”
Daniel’s eyes filled.
“I was waiting for Charles to confess.”
Nathan froze.
“My father is dead.”
Daniel looked directly at him.
“No.”
Nathan’s heart stopped.
Daniel continued.
“The man you watched die was not Charles.”
Grace stared.
Nathan whispered.
“Then who was it?”
Daniel’s face twisted.
“Me.”
Nathan looked at him in disbelief.
Daniel continued.
“Or rather, it was supposed to be.”
Nathan shook his head.
Daniel smiled bitterly.
“Charles switched us.”
“He used my medical identity.”
“He had me declared terminal.”
“He planned to let me die under his name.”
Nathan stared.
“But you’re alive.”
“I escaped.”
Nathan’s pulse hammered.
“Then Charles…”
Daniel looked toward the dark forest outside.
“Charles Cole is still alive.”
Nathan could barely speak.
“Where?”
Daniel looked at the clock.
“He’ll come here tonight.”
“Why?”
“Because I told him I had both children.”
Grace stepped forward.
“You used Lily and Noah as bait?”
Daniel shook his head.
“They aren’t here.”
Nathan’s voice became dangerous.
“You told Charles they were.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Daniel looked at him.
“Because your father has spent five years hiding.”
“And tonight is the first time he believes he can take everything back.”
Headlights appeared through the trees.
Daniel looked toward the window.
May you like
“He’s here.”
