Chapter 9 - Margaret’s Offer

Margaret chose a public location.

Grand Central Terminal.

Thousands of people moved beneath the vaulted ceiling.

Cameras covered every entrance.

Nathan understood the message.

Margaret did not fear being seen with him.

She feared Samuel.

Nathan arrived alone.

At least that was what Margaret was supposed to believe.

Elena’s people watched from four locations.

Grace remained in a secure vehicle with Elias.

She had refused to stay behind.

Margaret sat beneath the clock.

Lily was beside her eating ice cream.

Nathan’s knees almost weakened from relief.

Lily saw him.

“Daddy!”

She jumped down.

Margaret did not stop her.

Nathan caught Lily in his arms.

He held her tightly.

“Are you okay?”

Lily nodded.

“The lady bought strawberry.”

Nathan looked at Margaret.

Margaret smiled.

“You’re welcome.”

Nathan’s expression hardened.

“You burned the farmhouse.”

“No.”

“Elena’s people are missing.”

“No.”

“You kidnapped my daughter.”

Margaret’s smile faded.

“I removed her before Samuel’s men arrived.”

Nathan stared.

“What?”

Margaret stood.

“The fire was Samuel.”

Nathan looked at Lily.

No injuries.

No fear of Margaret.

That confused him.

Margaret gestured toward a nearby bench.

“Sit.”

Nathan remained standing.

Margaret sighed.

“You have Evelyn’s stubbornness.”

“Do not say my mother’s name.”

“She was my friend once.”

Nathan almost laughed.

“You destroyed her.”

Margaret looked sad.

“That is what Charles told you through the ledger.”

“The ledger says you authorized removal.”

“Yes.”

Nathan stared.

Margaret did not deny it.

“What did removal mean?”

“Get her out of the company.”

“Out of the city.”

“Out of Charles’s reach.”

Nathan frowned.

“You expect me to believe you were helping her?”

“No.”

Margaret shook her head.

“I was helping myself.”

“At least you’re consistent.”

Margaret looked toward Lily.

“Charles had become reckless.”

“He wanted to end our arrangement.”

“Evelyn wanted to expose both families.”

“I wanted her silenced politically.”

“Samuel wanted her dead.”

Nathan sat slowly.

“Why?”

“Because Samuel built the blackmail network.”

“Ledger Nine was his insurance.”

Nathan stared.

“Against whom?”

“Everyone.”

Margaret looked around the terminal.

“Charles thought he controlled Samuel because Cole money funded him.”

“I thought I controlled Samuel because I was his wife.”

“We were both wrong.”

Nathan remembered Victoria’s confession.

“Victoria said Samuel forced her to maintain the ledger.”

Margaret’s face tightened.

“She should never have been involved.”

“She attacked Grace.”

“I know.”

“She tried to kill her.”

Margaret looked away.

Nathan leaned forward.

“You raised her.”

“Yes.”

“You taught her.”

Margaret’s eyes flashed.

“Do not confuse my sins with hers.”

Nathan laughed.

“You handed her a map.”

“She chose the destination.”

Margaret’s jaw tightened.

Nathan continued.

“Why does Samuel want Lily dead?”

“Control.”

“Explain.”

Margaret looked at Lily.

“Your grandfather’s trust is larger than you know.”

Nathan frowned.

“How much?”

“Cole Meridian is only one asset.”

Nathan knew there were property holdings.

Private equity.

Foundations.

But nothing that explained murder.

Margaret whispered.

“Your grandfather controlled a private intelligence archive worth more than the company.”

Nathan stared.

“What archive?”

“Ledger Nine is an index.”

“Not the archive.”

Nathan felt cold.

“The patient data.”

“Partly.”

“The political files?”

“Yes.”

“The blackmail?”

“Yes.”

Margaret leaned closer.

“Every secret collected by the Cole-Vale alliance for thirty years.”

Nathan looked at Lily.

“And she inherits access.”

“Only she can.”

“Why?”

“Biometric trust lock.”

Nathan stared.

“That technology didn’t exist when my grandfather died.”

Margaret smiled sadly.

“The system was modernized.”

“By whom?”

“Samuel.”

Nathan understood.

Samuel needed Lily alive long enough to open something.

Then dead.

Nathan’s voice became quiet.

“What happens at midnight?”

Margaret looked at her watch.

“The Legacy Trust completes a scheduled reallocation.”

“What reallocation?”

“If no recognized Cole heir under five is registered in secure custody by midnight, the intelligence archive transfers to the Vale Preservation Foundation.”

Nathan stared.

“That’s why you needed me to marry Victoria.”

“Yes.”

“Proxy access.”

“Yes.”

“That’s why Grace had to disappear.”

“Yes.”

“Why not kill Lily earlier?”

Margaret hesitated.

“Charles built a dead-man switch.”

Nathan closed his eyes.

“If Lily dies suspiciously…”

“The archive is automatically transmitted.”

“To whom?”

“Twenty-six newspapers.”

Nathan almost smiled.

His father had finally done something useful.

Margaret continued.

“Samuel believes he can disable the switch tonight.”

“How?”

“Using Lily.”

Nathan’s blood ran cold.

Margaret pulled out her phone.

She showed Nathan a photograph.

Samuel stood inside an underground data center.

Nathan recognized the Cole Meridian disaster recovery facility outside Albany.

“How did he get in?”

Margaret laughed bitterly.

“He built it.”

Nathan stared.

Margaret continued.

“If he gets Lily there before midnight, he can use her biometric markers to override the trust.”

Nathan stood.

“Then why did you bring her here?”

“Because I want a deal.”

Nathan’s face hardened.

Margaret looked at him.

“Give me Ledger Nine.”

“I’ll give you Samuel.”

Nathan laughed.

“You expect me to hand you the evidence?”

“I expect you to decide which enemy is currently trying to kill your child.”

Nathan stared.

Grace appeared from the crowd.

Nathan’s eyes widened.

She had left the vehicle.

Margaret’s face changed.

Grace stopped ten feet away.

“You.”

Margaret looked at her.

“Grace.”

Grace walked closer.

Nathan moved to stop her.

She lifted one hand.

“I’m not going to hit her.”

Margaret almost smiled.

Grace stopped in front of her.

“You stood in my hospital room.”

Margaret nodded.

“You threatened my mother.”

“Yes.”

“You threatened my brother.”

“Yes.”

“You told me Nathan would hate me if I ruined his future.”

“Yes.”

Grace’s eyes filled.

“Why?”

Margaret looked at Lily.

“Because I was protecting Victoria’s future.”

Grace laughed through tears.

“You call that protection?”

“No.”

Margaret’s face broke for the first time.

“I call it what I did.”

Grace stared.

Margaret continued.

“I thought I could frighten you away.”

“I thought distance would solve it.”

“I thought Charles would keep Samuel under control.”

“I was wrong.”

Grace’s voice trembled.

“My daughter spent four years hiding because of you.”

“Yes.”

Margaret did not defend herself.

Grace raised her hand.

Then stopped.

She lowered it.

“You’re not worth losing another second with her.”

Margaret looked away.

Nathan watched both women.

He could not forgive Margaret.

But he could use her.

“Where is Samuel?”

Margaret handed him a card.

Coordinates.

Albany.

“Midnight.”

Nathan looked at the clock.

Six hours.

Margaret turned to leave.

Nathan stopped her.

“Victoria.”

Margaret froze.

“What about her?”

“Where is she?”

Margaret looked toward the crowd.

“I don’t know.”

Nathan frowned.

Margaret’s voice became strange.

“Samuel took her.”

“When?”

“Two hours ago.”

“Why?”

Margaret closed her eyes.

“Because Victoria finally refused him.”

Nathan stared.

Margaret continued.

“He told her to bring Lily.”

“She called me instead.”

Nathan thought of Victoria attacking Grace.

Maintaining the ledger.

Helping hide Lily.

Nothing erased those crimes.

But perhaps Victoria had finally realized Samuel planned to kill a child.

Nathan looked at Margaret.

“What will he do to her?”

Margaret’s eyes filled with tears.

“What he does to everyone who becomes inconvenient.”

Nathan understood.

Grace whispered.

“We can’t leave her.”

Nathan turned.

Grace’s face hardened.

“I hate her.”

“She hurt me.”

“She tried to hurt Lily.”

“But if we leave her there to die, we become them.”

Nathan stared at Grace.

She was right.

He hated that she was right.

Nathan looked at Margaret.

“You’re coming with us.”

Margaret shook her head.

“Samuel will know.”

“That’s the point.”

Nathan handed Lily to Grace.

“We’re not sneaking into Albany.”

Elias appeared from the crowd.

“What are you planning?”

Nathan looked at the giant news screens overhead.

“We’re taking every camera in the country with us.”

Elias frowned.

Nathan pulled out his phone.

He called the largest financial network in America.

“My name is Nathan Cole.”

“I have evidence of a thirty-year criminal conspiracy.”

The producer on the other end went silent.

Nathan looked at Margaret.

“And I’m ready to broadcast it live.”

Margaret’s face drained.

Grace stared at him.

Elias whispered.

“That could destroy everything.”

Nathan looked at Lily.

May you like

“That’s the idea.”
