Chapter 16 - The Plane

The Cole airfield looked deserted.

One Gulfstream sat beneath the hangar lights.

Samuel stood beside it.

Lily and Noah were nowhere visible.

Nathan stopped the car fifty yards away.

Grace reached for the door.

Nathan caught her hand.

“Wait.”

She looked at him.

“Something’s wrong.”

Charles stared toward the plane.

“No ground crew.”

Nathan nodded.

Samuel waved.

Grace’s breathing changed.

“Where are the children?”

Nathan opened the door.

They approached slowly.

Samuel smiled.

“Family reunion.”

Nathan looked around.

“Where are Lily and Noah?”

“Safe.”

Grace stepped forward.

“Show me.”

Samuel lifted his phone.

Live video appeared.

Lily and Noah sat in a small room.

Elena was tied nearby.

Grace’s fists clenched.

Samuel smiled.

“Get on the plane.”

Nathan shook his head.

“No.”

Samuel pressed a button.

A man on the video entered the children’s room.

Grace screamed.

“Stop!”

Nathan grabbed her.

Samuel smiled.

“Plane.”

Charles whispered.

“Do it.”

Nathan looked at him.

Charles nodded.

They boarded.

Samuel sat opposite them.

Two armed men remained near the cockpit.

The plane taxied.

Nathan looked out the window.

No police.

No rescue.

Exactly as Samuel demanded.

Grace whispered.

“Where are we going?”

Samuel smiled.

“Home.”

Nathan frowned.

Samuel looked at Charles.

“Your father always loved islands.”

Charles’s face changed.

Nathan noticed.

“What island?”

Charles whispered.

“Saint Orison.”

Nathan had never heard the name.

Samuel laughed.

“You never told him?”

Charles looked away.

Nathan stared.

“What is Saint Orison?”

Grace looked between them.

Samuel answered.

“The real Cole archive.”

Nathan frowned.

“I thought the mirror was in the Caymans.”

Samuel smiled.

“So did everyone.”

Charles clenched his jaw.

Nathan turned.

“You lied again.”

Charles said nothing.

Samuel laughed.

“Your father cannot breathe without lying.”

Nathan looked away in disgust.

Saint Orison was a privately owned island in the Caribbean.

Cole Maritime had purchased it thirty-two years ago through shell companies.

Officially, it was an environmental research station.

In reality, it housed the physical records behind Ledger Nine.

Samuel needed Charles.

Grace.

And eventually the children.

Nathan understood.

“You never had full access.”

Samuel’s smile faded.

“No.”

“Charles locked you out.”

“Yes.”

“After Evelyn.”

Samuel looked at Charles.

“He developed principles late.”

Charles stared out the window.

Samuel continued.

“The archive requires Cole blood and trustee authorization.”

Nathan looked at Grace.

“Her.”

Samuel nodded.

“And Charles.”

Nathan frowned.

“Why Charles?”

“Founder override.”

Nathan almost laughed.

“So you kidnapped the wrong generation.”

Samuel smiled.

“No.”

“Charles unlocks the vault.”

“Grace transfers control.”

“The children authenticate succession.”

Nathan felt cold.

“You need all of us.”

“Yes.”

Grace stared.

“And then?”

Samuel said nothing.

Nathan answered.

“Then we die.”

Samuel smiled.

“Charles raised an intelligent boy.”

Charles lunged across the aisle.

Samuel’s guard struck him with the pistol.

Charles collapsed.

Nathan caught him.

Grace shouted.

Samuel leaned back.

“Save the heroics.”

Nathan looked at Charles.

Blood ran from his temple.

For the first time, Nathan touched his father without anger.

“Stay awake.”

Charles looked at him.

“I’m sorry.”

Nathan froze.

Charles whispered.

“For all of it.”

Nathan said nothing.

Charles smiled faintly.

“I kept waiting until there was enough time to fix things.”

Nathan looked into his father’s eyes.

Charles continued.

“There is never enough time.”

Nathan swallowed.

“No.”

The plane landed before dawn.

Saint Orison was beautiful.

That made it worse.

Turquoise water surrounded white beaches.

Palm trees moved in warm wind.

Beneath the island sat thirty years of corruption.

Samuel’s men led them into a concrete structure hidden behind a research facility.

The vault door stood forty feet underground.

Three scanners.

Charles placed his hand on the first.

Green.

Grace placed hers on the second.

Green.

The third requested CHILD SUCCESSION BIOMETRIC.

Samuel smiled.

“The children are arriving.”

Grace spun.

“You said they were safe.”

“They are.”

Samuel looked at his watch.

“For another twenty minutes.”

Nathan clenched his fists.

Grace whispered.

“Nathan.”

He looked at her.

She was staring at a ceiling camera.

Then she touched her collar.

Nathan understood.

Elena had hidden a transmitter in Grace’s necklace before the airfield.

Samuel’s jammer had blocked it on the plane.

But underground, one tiny green light was blinking.

Signal.

Nathan moved subtly in front of Grace.

He needed time.

“Samuel.”

Samuel looked at him.

“My mother.”

“What about her?”

“Why did you keep her alive for six years?”

Samuel smiled.

“Information.”

“That’s not the whole answer.”

Samuel’s face changed.

Nathan continued.

“You could have tortured her for Ledger Nine in months.”

Samuel stared.

“You loved her.”

Charles looked up.

Grace froze.

Samuel laughed.

But not convincingly.

Nathan saw it.

“You loved Evelyn.”

Samuel’s eyes darkened.

“She chose Charles.”

Charles stared.

Nathan continued.

“And then she exposed you.”

“She humiliated you.”

Samuel’s jaw tightened.

“So you locked her away.”

Samuel stepped closer.

“You know nothing.”

“I know obsession when I see it.”

Samuel struck Nathan.

Nathan tasted blood.

Grace flinched.

Nathan smiled.

“Thank you.”

Samuel frowned.

“For what?”

Nathan spit blood onto the floor.

“For proving I found the right nerve.”

Samuel raised his hand again.

An explosion shook the facility.

Lights flickered.

Samuel turned.

Nathan tackled him.

Grace grabbed Charles.

Gunfire erupted in the hallway.

Elena’s voice came through the emergency speaker.

“Nathan!”

Samuel’s men rushed toward the door.

Nathan fought Samuel on the floor.

Samuel reached for a knife.

Charles kicked it away.

Samuel struck Charles.

Grace grabbed the knife.

She held it toward Samuel.

“Stop.”

Samuel froze.

Grace’s hand shook.

Nathan stood.

“Grace.”

Samuel smiled at her.

“You won’t.”

Grace looked at the man who stole her children.

The man who destroyed five years of her life.

The man who imprisoned Nathan’s mother.

Her grip tightened.

Samuel laughed.

“You’re still the maid.”

Grace’s expression changed.

She lowered the knife.

Samuel smiled.

Then Grace pressed the vault emergency lock.

Steel doors slammed around Samuel.

He became trapped inside the security chamber.

His smile vanished.

Grace dropped the knife.

“No.”

She looked through the glass.

“I’m their mother.”

Federal tactical agents stormed the corridor.

Elena appeared.

Nathan stared.

“Children?”

“Safe.”

Grace collapsed with relief.

Nathan caught her.

Charles leaned against the wall.

Elena looked toward the vault.

“Samuel?”

Nathan nodded.

“Alive.”

Samuel pounded the glass.

Nathan watched him.

Samuel shouted.

“You need me!”

Nathan shook his head.

“No.”

Samuel screamed.

“You don’t know what’s inside!”

Nathan looked toward the sealed archive.

“That’s what investigators are for.”

Charles suddenly collapsed.

Nathan turned.

“Dad.”

The word came out before he could stop it.

Charles heard it.

So did Grace.

Nathan knelt.

Charles clutched his chest.

Elena called medical support.

Charles looked at Nathan.

“Don’t become me.”

Nathan held his hand.

“I won’t.”

Charles’s eyes filled.

“You already chose better.”

Nathan looked at Grace.

Then toward the children arriving down the corridor.

Lily ran.

“Daddy!”

Noah followed more cautiously.

Nathan opened one arm.

Lily crashed into him.

Noah stopped three feet away.

Nathan looked at him.

He held out his hand.

Noah stared.

Then slowly stepped forward.

Nathan pulled both children close.

Charles watched.

A tear moved down his face.

Then his eyes closed.

Nathan shouted.

Medical staff rushed in.

They began resuscitation.

Grace held Lily and Noah away.

Nathan stood frozen.

Charles’s monitor flatlined.

For the second time in Nathan’s life, he watched his father die.

This time he knew it was real.

And this time, Charles died looking at the family he had nearly destroyed trying to protect.
