Chapter 15 - Father

The black SUV stopped fifty yards from the cabin.

Nathan stood behind the curtain.

Grace remained near the back exit.

Daniel sat calmly at the table.

Nathan looked at him.

“You planned this.”

“Yes.”

“You knew I’d find you.”

“I hoped.”

“You could have called.”

“You wouldn’t have believed me.”

Nathan hated that Daniel was right.

The cabin door opened.

Charles Cole walked inside.

Nathan forgot every prepared word.

His father looked older.

His skin was pale.

His once-powerful frame had thinned.

But he was alive.

Charles stopped when he saw Nathan.

For one second, something human crossed his face.

“My son.”

Nathan hit him.

Charles fell against the wall.

Daniel did not move.

Grace watched.

Nathan grabbed Charles by the collar.

“You buried my mother.”

Charles coughed.

“Yes.”

“You stole my daughter.”

“No.”

“You let Samuel steal my son.”

Charles’s face changed.

“What?”

Nathan froze.

Charles looked genuinely shocked.

“Son?”

Grace stepped closer.

“You knew I had twins.”

Charles stared at her.

“No.”

Grace laughed bitterly.

Charles turned toward Daniel.

Daniel smiled coldly.

“Samuel kept that one from you.”

Charles looked shaken.

Nathan released him.

Charles sat slowly.

Everything Nathan believed had become unreliable.

Even Charles apparently did not know every crime committed inside his own conspiracy.

Nathan stood over him.

“Why are you alive?”

Charles wiped blood from his mouth.

“Because Samuel tried to kill me.”

Daniel laughed.

Charles ignored him.

“I had cancer.”

“That part was real.”

“I underwent experimental treatment overseas.”

“The public diagnosis was worse than the reality.”

Nathan stared.

“And the man who died?”

Charles looked at Daniel.

“My brother was supposed to be in that bed.”

Daniel’s face hardened.

Nathan whispered.

“You were going to kill your own brother.”

Charles looked ashamed.

“Yes.”

Nathan almost struck him again.

Grace stepped between them.

“Not yet.”

Nathan stared at her.

Grace looked at Charles.

“Where is Samuel’s secondary archive?”

Charles froze.

Daniel looked impressed.

Nathan frowned.

“Secondary archive?”

Grace nodded.

“In the hospital, Samuel kept asking about ‘the mirror.’”

Charles said nothing.

Grace stepped closer.

“I heard him speaking to one of his men.”

“He said Albany could burn because the mirror would survive.”

Charles sighed.

“Cayman Islands.”

Nathan frowned.

“A server?”

“A financial archive.”

Charles nodded.

“Ledger Nine proves corruption.”

“The mirror proves ownership.”

“Ownership of what?”

“Shell companies.”

“Secret trusts.”

“Politicians.”

“Private intelligence contractors.”

Nathan felt sick.

“People?”

Charles looked away.

Grace stared.

“You bought people.”

Charles whispered.

“We bought loyalty.”

Nathan laughed bitterly.

“That sounds better to you?”

“No.”

Charles looked older every second.

Nathan asked.

“Why did you hide after your supposed death?”

“Because I discovered Samuel had infiltrated Cole Meridian more deeply than I realized.”

“So you abandoned me to him?”

“I thought you were safer if I was dead.”

Nathan turned away.

Again.

Always the same excuse.

Protection through abandonment.

Grace said quietly.

“That’s what powerful men tell themselves when they’re too afraid to face consequences.”

Charles looked at her.

Grace continued.

“You threatened me because you claimed it protected Nathan.”

“You hid because it protected Nathan.”

“You changed the trust because it protected Lily.”

“You lied because it protected the family.”

Grace shook her head.

“All you ever protected was your ability to decide for everyone else.”

Charles lowered his eyes.

Nathan looked at her.

She had just described his entire family history in four sentences.

Daniel stood.

“We’re wasting time.”

Charles looked at him.

“You.”

Daniel smiled.

“Hello, brother.”

Charles’s face twisted.

“You should have died.”

Daniel laughed.

“There he is.”

Nathan stepped between them.

“No.”

Both men looked at him.

“This ends differently.”

Charles stared at Nathan.

“You don’t understand what Samuel still controls.”

Nathan smiled coldly.

“I understand enough.”

Charles shook his head.

“If the mirror archive releases, hundreds of governments will be implicated.”

“Good.”

“Markets will collapse.”

“Good.”

“People could die.”

Nathan stopped.

Charles leaned closer.

“Not everyone in those files is guilty.”

Nathan knew.

Victims.

Informants.

Whistleblowers.

People coerced into cooperation.

Dumping everything publicly could destroy innocent lives.

Samuel had designed the perfect trap.

Hide the archive and protect criminals.

Release it and sacrifice victims.

Grace whispered.

“Then we don’t publish everything.”

Charles looked at her.

“We give it to independent prosecutors.”

Nathan nodded.

“Multiple jurisdictions.”

Daniel laughed.

“You still believe institutions can fix this?”

Nathan looked at him.

“No.”

“But I believe evidence duplicated across enough institutions becomes difficult to bury.”

Charles sat back.

For the first time, Nathan saw something like respect.

Nathan hated wanting it.

His phone rang.

Federal investigator Maria Chen.

Nathan answered.

“We have a problem.”

“What?”

“Samuel Vale escaped custody.”

Nathan closed his eyes.

Of course.

“How?”

“Transport ambush.”

“When?”

“Twenty minutes ago.”

Nathan looked at Charles.

Charles understood.

“He’ll go for the mirror.”

Maria continued.

“We intercepted a message.”

“Samuel knows Charles Cole is alive.”

Nathan stared at his father.

“And?”

“He put out a twenty-million-dollar bounty.”

Daniel whistled.

Charles did not react.

Maria added.

“There’s another target.”

Nathan’s stomach tightened.

“Who?”

“Grace Bennett.”

Nathan looked at Grace.

“Why?”

Maria answered.

“Because she is now the legal trustee for both children.”

Nathan frowned.

“Both?”

“Yes.”

“The emergency trust recognized the twin record.”

Nathan understood.

If Lily and Noah both survived, Grace controlled an enormous portion of the estate until they reached adulthood.

Samuel did not only need the children.

He needed Grace removed.

Nathan ended the call.

Grace looked at him.

“What?”

He told her.

She absorbed it quietly.

Then she laughed.

Everyone stared.

Grace shook her head.

“I spent five years cleaning other people’s houses.”

“Now apparently I control half a billion-dollar empire.”

Charles corrected her automatically.

“More.”

Grace looked at him.

“How much?”

Charles hesitated.

“Approximately eleven billion.”

Grace stared.

Daniel laughed.

Nathan almost smiled.

Grace sat down.

“Of course.”

Nathan crouched in front of her.

“You okay?”

“No.”

“Good answer.”

Grace looked at him.

Then her expression softened.

Nathan’s phone buzzed.

A photograph arrived.

Lily and Noah.

Both asleep.

Safe with Elena.

Nathan exhaled.

Then another image arrived.

Elena bound to a chair.

Nathan stood.

Grace looked.

Her face drained.

A message followed.

Samuel.

BRING CHARLES AND GRACE.

OR BOTH CHILDREN COME WITH ME.

Nathan stared.

There was a live location.

The old Cole airfield.

Charles whispered.

“It’s a trap.”

Nathan looked at him.

“Yes.”

Daniel asked.

“What are you going to do?”

Nathan looked toward Grace.

She was already standing.

“We’re going.”

Nathan shook his head.

“No.”

Grace stepped closer.

“They have our children.”

“I’m not bringing you.”

“You don’t decide for me.”

Nathan stopped.

Grace’s voice hardened.

“That is exactly what your father did.”

Nathan closed his eyes.

She was right.

Again.

He nodded.

“Then we go together.”

Charles stood.

“And me.”

Nathan looked at him.

“They asked for you.”

Charles smiled sadly.

“For once, I can be useful.”

Daniel grabbed his coat.

Nathan shook his head.

“No.”

Daniel frowned.

“You need me.”

“I need someone who knows the mirror archive.”

Charles laughed.

Nathan looked at Daniel.

“And someone has to remain alive if this goes wrong.”

Daniel stared.

Nathan continued.

“You spent years protecting the children from the shadows.”

“Do it once without lying.”

Daniel’s face softened.

He nodded.

Nathan, Grace, and Charles left for the airfield.

None of them knew Samuel had already prepared a plane.

May you like

And none of them knew the destination was not the Cayman Islands.
