Chapter 12 - The Confession

Elias sat alone in his office when Nathan arrived.

Every drawer was open.

Files covered the floor.

He had not run.

He had not destroyed anything.

A bottle of whiskey sat untouched beside him.

Nathan entered.

Grace waited outside with Elena.

Elias looked older.

“Sit.”

Nathan remained standing.

“You killed her.”

Elias nodded.

“I did.”

Nathan wanted to hate him cleanly.

It would have been easier.

But nothing in his life was clean anymore.

“Tell me exactly what happened.”

Elias removed his glasses.

“Evelyn came to me six years after her supposed death.”

Nathan’s jaw tightened.

“She looked like a ghost.”

“Thin.”

“Sick.”

“Terrified.”

“She told me Samuel had held her at Vale Behavioral.”

“She escaped during a storm.”

“She spent months moving between shelters.”

“Then she found Grace.”

Nathan closed his eyes briefly.

Elias continued.

“She wanted to expose everything.”

“I told her we needed time.”

“She didn’t have time.”

“How sick was she?”

“Very.”

Nathan waited.

“She asked me to store her recordings.”

“She asked me to modify Charles’s trust instructions.”

Nathan frowned.

“You modified them?”

“With Charles’s consent.”

“When?”

“Before he died.”

Nathan stared.

“Charles saw Evelyn again?”

“Yes.”

Nathan’s breath stopped.

“When?”

“Two days before she died.”

Nathan almost struck Elias.

“My father saw my mother alive and told me nothing?”

“He begged her forgiveness.”

“I don’t care.”

“I know.”

“What happened?”

Elias looked down.

“Evelyn told Charles she would expose him too.”

“Charles agreed.”

Nathan stared.

“He agreed?”

“He had cancer.”

“He knew he was dying.”

“He wanted Samuel destroyed.”

Nathan laughed bitterly.

“So guilt suddenly made him noble.”

“No.”

Elias shook his head.

“Fear made him practical.”

That sounded more like Charles.

Nathan continued.

“And then?”

“Evelyn collapsed.”

“Hospital?”

“She refused.”

“Because Samuel controlled hospital systems.”

“Yes.”

Elias swallowed.

“She was in pain.”

“She begged me not to call anyone.”

“What medication?”

“Morphine.”

Nathan stared.

“How much?”

“Enough.”

Nathan looked away.

Silence stretched.

Elias whispered.

“I told myself it was mercy.”

Nathan turned.

“Was it?”

“I don’t know.”

That answer mattered.

Nathan sat.

“What happened to her body?”

“Charles arranged cremation.”

Nathan’s eyes filled with rage.

“So my father buried her twice.”

“Yes.”

Nathan covered his face.

Years of grief had been manipulated by the people closest to him.

Elias slid a flash drive across the desk.

“This contains the rest of Evelyn’s message.”

Nathan stared.

“Why wasn’t it in the archive?”

“Because she didn’t trust the archive.”

“Why trust you?”

“She didn’t.”

Elias smiled sadly.

“She gave copies to three people.”

“Who?”

“Benjamin.”

“Me.”

“And someone whose identity I never learned.”

Nathan inserted the drive into an offline laptop.

Evelyn appeared.

Same chair.

Same tired face.

Nathan pressed play.

“Nathan.”

“If Elias has obeyed me, then you now know what he did.”

Nathan looked at Elias.

Evelyn continued.

“I asked him to help me die.”

Nathan closed his eyes.

“He did not want to.”

“I forced him to choose between my suffering and his conscience.”

Nathan’s jaw tightened.

“I am sorry for leaving that burden behind.”

Elias began crying silently.

Nathan kept watching.

Evelyn’s expression changed.

“But that is not the final truth.”

Nathan leaned closer.

“The final truth is about Lily.”

Nathan froze.

Evelyn continued.

“Charles changed the trust because Lily was not the only child at risk.”

Nathan frowned.

“What?”

Evelyn took a breath.

“Grace was pregnant with twins.”

Nathan stared at the screen.

The room disappeared.

“No.”

Evelyn continued.

“One child was declared stillborn.”

Nathan stood.

“No.”

Elias stared.

He had not known.

Evelyn’s voice trembled.

“I do not believe that child died.”

Nathan’s heart pounded.

Grace had never mentioned a twin.

Maybe she did not know.

Evelyn continued.

“Samuel had access to the delivery ward.”

“He had already learned that two Cole heirs would divide the trust in ways he could not control.”

Nathan felt sick.

“If I am right, Lily has a sibling.”

The video ended.

Nathan remained standing.

Elias whispered.

“Nathan.”

He did not answer.

He walked out of the office.

Grace saw his face.

“What happened?”

Nathan stopped in front of her.

“Grace.”

She frowned.

“What?”

“When Lily was born…”

Grace became still.

Nathan’s voice shook.

“Was there another baby?”

Grace went white.

Elena looked between them.

Grace slowly sat.

“No.”

Nathan crouched.

“My mother said you were pregnant with twins.”

Grace shook her head.

“No.”

“She said one was declared stillborn.”

Grace’s eyes filled.

“No.”

Nathan took her hand.

“What do you remember?”

Grace began breathing faster.

“The delivery was difficult.”

“Samuel’s hospital?”

“Yes.”

“Were you sedated?”

“Yes.”

“Who was there?”

“A doctor.”

“A nurse.”

“Charles came later.”

“Anyone from the Vales?”

Grace closed her eyes.

“Margaret.”

Nathan froze.

“What?”

“She was outside.”

Grace covered her face.

“I thought I imagined it.”

Nathan held her shoulders gently.

“What did they tell you?”

“That Lily’s heart rate dropped.”

“That they needed emergency surgery.”

“Then?”

“I woke up.”

“And Lily?”

“Beside me.”

“Did anyone mention another child?”

“No.”

Nathan looked at Elena.

“Find the delivery records.”

Elena immediately began working.

Grace stood.

“Nathan.”

He looked at her.

“If there was another baby…”

Her voice broke.

“No.”

Nathan pulled her into his arms.

She resisted for half a second.

Then collapsed against him.

“I would have known.”

Nathan closed his eyes.

“You were unconscious.”

“They couldn’t…”

Her words dissolved.

Nathan held her.

Elena spoke from behind them.

“I found something.”

They turned.

She held up the tablet.

Grace’s medical file listed a single birth.

But the operating room log recorded two neonatal resuscitation teams.

Nathan stared.

Grace shook her head.

“No.”

Elena continued.

“There are two infant wristband numbers.”

Grace covered her mouth.

Nathan looked at the second number.

Infant B.

No name.

Transferred.

“Transferred where?”

Elena searched.

The destination field was blank.

Nathan’s phone rang.

Margaret.

He answered.

“Did Grace have twins?”

Silence.

Nathan shouted.

“Answer me!”

Margaret whispered.

“Yes.”

Grace cried out.

Nathan put the call on speaker.

Grace approached.

“What happened to my baby?”

Margaret began crying.

“I didn’t know until after.”

“Where is my child?”

“Samuel took him.”

Grace froze.

“Him?”

Nathan’s heart stopped.

Margaret whispered.

“A boy.”

Grace collapsed into Nathan’s arms.

Nathan held her upright.

“Where is he?”

“I don’t know.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“Samuel told me the baby died.”

“And you believed him?”

“No.”

Margaret’s voice cracked.

“I chose to.”

Nathan shut his eyes.

Grace screamed at the phone.

“WHERE IS MY SON?”

Margaret sobbed.

“I don’t know.”

Then she whispered.

“But Victoria might.”

Nathan looked at Grace.

Margaret continued.

May you like

“Because five years ago, Victoria brought a baby boy home.”
