Chapter 11 - The Daughter Before Eleanor

Khloe could not move.

The newborn inside the incubator was tiny but clearly alive.

A ventilator assisted her breathing.

A patch of dark hair covered her head.

Her wristband named Khloe as her mother.

“That child is not mine.”

Dr. Shaw’s expression carried exhausted regret.

“Biologically, she is.”

Sebastian stared through the incubator glass.

“When was she born?”

“Twenty-one weeks ago.”

The same time Avery had supposedly received the embryo transfer.

Khloe looked at the scar hidden beneath Dr. Shaw’s scrub sleeve.

“What did you do to me?”

Dr. Shaw swallowed.

“During the winter benefit, Miles ordered an egg-retrieval procedure.”

“You told Sebastian it was a biopsy.”

“Yes.”

“You created embryos.”

“Four.”

“Two were transferred to Avery.”

“One was transferred.”

Khloe looked at the newborn.

“And one was placed in another surrogate.”

Dr. Shaw nodded.

“Who?”

“A woman named Elise Ward.”

“Where is she?”

“Dead.”

The answer landed without drama.

Elise had suffered complications during delivery.

Miles had buried the death through false records.

The baby had remained hidden beneath the hospital ever since.

“Why did Miles keep her alive?” Sebastian asked.

“To test the succession system.”

Dr. Shaw looked toward the ceiling cameras.

“She was a prototype.”

Khloe flinched.

“Do not call her that.”

“I am telling you how Miles described her.”

The child moved one hand inside the incubator.

Khloe stepped closer.

Every instinct told her to touch the glass.

Every rational part of her recoiled from the violation that had created this moment.

“What is her name?”

“She does not have one.”

“She has been alive for five months.”

“Miles assigned her a number.”

Khloe looked at the wristband.

The code beneath her own name ended in 001.

First biological child.

The trust’s true primary heir had already been born.

Miles had concealed her existence while preparing rival claims.

“Why reveal her now?” Mara asked.

Dr. Shaw glanced toward the elevator.

“I did not.”

“Miles brought us here.”

“He does not know this nursery is still active.”

Isabella approached Matteo’s chamber.

Her father lay behind thick glass in the next room.

“Then who redirected the elevator?”

Dr. Shaw looked at the newborn.

“Charles.”

Khloe’s heart stopped for a beat.

“My father?”

“He controls the old laboratory routes.”

“Where is he?”

“I do not know.”

“You said they had your son.”

“They do.”

Khloe remembered Dr. Shaw’s plea through the observation window.

“You signed a statement against me.”

“Miles sent me a live video of Jonah.”

“Then you returned here voluntarily.”

“To keep this child alive.”

Khloe’s anger sharpened.

“You kept my daughter beneath a morgue.”

“I prevented Miles from terminating life support.”

The word daughter felt impossible and undeniable at once.

Sebastian placed a hand on the incubator.

“Why is she still ventilated?”

“She has a congenital airway problem.”

“Can it be treated?”

“Yes.”

“Then why has it not been treated?”

“Miles needed her medically dependent.”

The pattern repeated.

Every child had been weakened to make control easier.

Khloe looked at Dr. Shaw.

“You will tell us everything.”

“I will.”

“You will also answer for what you did.”

“I know.”

Mara searched the nursery’s control panel.

“The doors have been locked from above.”

Isabella checked her badge.

It no longer worked.

Miles had trapped them on the hidden level.

Dr. Shaw opened a supply cabinet.

“Charles designed an older exit.”

“Show us.”

“I cannot leave the baby.”

“We take her,” Khloe said.

“Moving her without a transport ventilator could kill her.”

“Then find one.”

Dr. Shaw hesitated.

“There is one in the surgical room.”

Mara searched the corridor camera.

Avery’s bed was being moved toward that room.

Miles appeared beside her.

“Then we are going to him,” Sebastian said.

Khloe looked through the glass at the unnamed child.

She had been created through violence.

She had survived secrecy, neglect, and calculated weakness.

None of that made her less innocent.

Khloe opened the incubator access panel.

She placed one finger against the child’s palm.

The tiny hand closed around it.

Khloe began crying silently.

Sebastian stood behind her.

“I did not know.”

“Neither did I.”

“We will protect her.”

Khloe looked back at him.

“You could not protect the child you knew existed.”

The words hurt him.

She intended them to.

He nodded.

“You are right.”

No defense.

No excuse.

Only acceptance.

For the first time since the suite attack, Khloe believed he might understand the distance between apology and repair.

“What will you name her?” Dr. Shaw asked.

Khloe looked at the infant.

“My mother warned me not to believe the first recording.”

She thought of everything taken and rewritten.

“Her name is Truth.”

Sebastian blinked.

Khloe shook her head.

“No.”

She looked at the child again.

“Verity.”

Verity Eleanor Thorne.

A name meaning truth.

Dr. Shaw updated the bracelet.

The succession terminal activated.

PRIMARY SUCCESSOR IDENTIFIED.

VERITY ELEANOR THORNE.

The hospital lights pulsed.

Somewhere above them, locked databases began transferring authority.

Miles appeared on every screen.

His calm expression had vanished.

“What did you do?”

Khloe faced the camera.

“I gave my daughter a name.”

“You have no legal claim to that child.”

“She is biologically mine.”

“She was born through a contracted surrogate.”

“A contract created without my consent is evidence of trafficking.”

Miles smiled again.

“You think language will save you?”

“No.”

Khloe held up the bracelet containing the footage.

“Evidence will.”

Miles studied it.

“The drive should have been destroyed.”

“You underestimated Mara.”

“I will correct that.”

The nursery ventilation shut off.

An alarm sounded.

Verity’s incubator switched to backup power.

Dr. Shaw ran toward the oxygen controls.

“Miles is depressurizing the level.”

“How long do we have?” Sebastian asked.

“Seven minutes before the incubator backup fails.”

Isabella pounded on Matteo’s chamber.

“Open this door!”

Miles watched her through the screen.

“You failed me.”

“You used me.”

“I educated you.”

“You promised my father.”

“I promised he would be released.”

Miles touched a control.

The glass chamber around Matteo began filling with white vapor.

Isabella screamed.

Khloe grabbed her.

“Panicking wastes time.”

“That is my father.”

“And that is my daughter.”

Their eyes met.

For once, their goals aligned.

Mara accessed the old wiring map.

“Charles’s exit is behind the oxygen manifold.”

Dr. Shaw began disconnecting Verity’s incubator from the primary system.

Sebastian found a transport ventilator in the surgical supply room.

They transferred the child carefully.

Her oxygen level dropped.

Khloe kept her finger around the tiny hand.

“Stay with me, Verity.”

Mara opened the hidden passage.

A narrow tunnel ran behind the laboratory wall.

Isabella refused to leave Matteo.

Khloe looked at the vapor thickening around him.

“The chamber may be moving him rather than killing him.”

Dr. Shaw checked the pressure gauges.

“She is right.”

A floor panel beneath Matteo’s bed opened.

The entire chamber descended.

Miles was moving him to another level.

Isabella followed Khloe into the tunnel.

Sebastian carried the transport unit.

Mara closed the hidden panel behind them.

The nursery backup failed seconds later.

Darkness filled the passage.

A voice came through an old speaker.

Not Miles.

An older man.

“Khloe.”

She stopped.

She knew the voice despite nineteen years of silence.

Her father had called her name that way when she woke from nightmares.

“Dad?”

“Follow the blue lights.”

Small lights activated along the tunnel floor.

“Where are you?”

“Closer than Miles realizes.”

“Why did you leave me?”

The silence lasted several steps.

“To keep you alive.”

“You let me bury you.”

“I buried part of myself that day too.”

The tunnel divided.

Blue lights continued to the left.

Red lights flashed to the right.

Her father spoke again.

“Do not follow the blue lights.”

Khloe stopped.

Sebastian looked at her.

“What?”

The speaker crackled.

A second voice, perfectly matching Charles Vale, repeated the instruction.

“Follow the blue lights.”

Miles had copied her father’s voice.

One path led to Charles.

May you like

The other led to a trap.

Then Verity stopped breathing.
