Chapter 17 - The Counterattack

Khloe requested Celia’s presence immediately.

The police initially refused.

Khloe activated the trust authority from her hospital bed.

St. Aurelia’s legal ownership changed across state records within minutes.

As controlling trustee, Khloe replaced the compromised hospital administrator, suspended every executive credential connected to Miles, and ordered the preservation of all medical archives.

The police brought Celia under guard.

She entered Avery’s room without her usual confidence.

Khloe held the records from the surgery performed before her wedding.

The procedure was labeled removal of a benign ovarian cyst.

No pathology report existed.

No imaging supported the diagnosis.

A fetal tissue code had been hidden beneath an encrypted billing number.

“You ended my pregnancy.”

Celia stopped.

“Who told you?”

“That is your defense?”

“You were not supposed to know.”

Khloe felt Sebastian’s absence more sharply.

He had lost a child without ever knowing the child existed.

“How far along was I?”

“Seven weeks.”

“Why?”

Celia looked toward Charles.

“Because the succession trust would have activated.”

“You knew before Miles?”

“I knew Eleanor’s conditions.”

“You decided I was not allowed to become a mother.”

“You and Sebastian were not married.”

“That was not your decision.”

“I was protecting my son.”

“From his own child?”

“From Alexander.”

Khloe stared at her.

“Alexander was already dead?”

“He was dying.”

The surgery had occurred weeks before his death.

Celia continued.

“Alexander told Miles about the trust when he realized Sebastian intended to marry you.”

“And Miles convinced you to remove the pregnancy.”

“He said the procedure would delay the transfer.”

“You killed my child.”

Celia’s eyes filled with tears.

“I believed it was tissue.”

“You knew it was a baby.”

“I did not think of it that way.”

“That is how every person in this conspiracy survives themselves.”

Khloe’s voice became cold.

“You rename the victim.”

Celia lowered her head.

Khloe ordered Mara to record the confession.

Celia did not resist.

“Where is the river clinic?”

Charles provided the coordinates.

The old clinic stood beneath a renovated retreat center owned by the Rossi family.

Miles had likely transferred Matteo’s old research equipment there years earlier.

Khloe contacted federal investigators directly through the Vale network.

She sent the original footage.

Avery’s confession.

Celia’s confession.

Dr. Shaw’s medical files.

The embryo records.

The explosive protocol.

She sent copies to three newspapers, two international medical regulators, and every independent Thorne Meridian director.

Miles could no longer erase the evidence by destroying one server.

Sebastian’s attorney called fifteen minutes later.

Federal prosecutors had paused the arrest after verifying that his signatures were altered.

He would be released under supervision.

Khloe spoke to him through a secured video connection.

He looked exhausted.

“They told me about the first pregnancy.”

Khloe could not find words that made the loss smaller.

“I did not know.”

“Neither did I.”

“I should have protected you from my family.”

“You should have believed me before protection became necessary.”

“Yes.”

He closed his eyes.

“Are you going to the clinic?”

“As soon as I can stand.”

“You had surgery eleven hours ago.”

“Our son is there.”

“I will go.”

“You will not go alone.”

“I will take Mara and federal agents.”

“Charles needs my bloodline signature.”

“I can bring him.”

Khloe studied her husband.

“Miles wants both of us.”

“Then he will prepare for both of us.”

“You are staying with the newborns.”

Sebastian looked toward the neonatal wing.

Verity, Eleanor, Hope, and Charles were alive but medically fragile.

Avery remained critical.

Someone had to protect them from another attempt.

“You trust me with them?”

“I trust that you understand what happens if you fail again.”

He accepted the answer.

Khloe turned the trust into a weapon.

She froze Rossi International’s acquisition funds.

She suspended Miles’s access to every hospital.

She released notices informing employees that retaliation against whistleblowers would be prosecuted through the trust.

Within an hour, messages arrived from nurses, programmers, and administrators.

Miles’s secrecy began collapsing.

A pharmacist admitted altering Khloe’s medication.

A technician identified the black ambulance route.

A retired engineer sent blueprints of the river clinic.

A former nurse reported caring for a newborn boy there.

The child had a crescent-shaped birthmark behind his left ear.

Khloe possessed the same mark.

His identity was confirmed.

She named him Nathaniel Charles Thorne.

Nathaniel meant gift.

Not Alexander.

Not a founder’s replacement.

Not a key.

Her son.

Federal agents assembled near the clinic.

Mara arranged an armored medical vehicle for Khloe.

Dr. Shaw objected until Khloe signed a discharge against medical advice.

“You could rupture your incision.”

“I will remain inside the vehicle until necessary.”

“That is not what your mother would do.”

Khloe looked at her.

“You knew my mother.”

Dr. Shaw lowered her eyes.

“She recruited me twenty years ago.”

“You helped her protect patient records.”

“At first.”

“Then Alexander paid you.”

“He threatened Jonah’s father.”

“Everyone had a reason.”

Dr. Shaw flinched.

“That does not excuse me.”

“No.”

Khloe looked through the neonatal window.

“It also does not prevent you from doing the right thing now.”

Dr. Shaw stayed with the children.

Charles accompanied Khloe and Mara.

Gabriel coordinated the legal response.

Isabella refused to remain behind.

“My father is at the clinic.”

“You attacked me,” Khloe said.

“I remember.”

“You may be arrested the moment we arrive.”

“I know.”

“Why should I take you?”

“Because the Rossi retreat has a passage no blueprint shows.”

Khloe allowed her into the second vehicle under guard.

They reached the property after sunset.

The retreat center appeared empty.

Federal agents surrounded the building.

Thermal cameras detected three people underground.

Miles.

Nathaniel.

Matteo.

No sign of Damian Holt.

Charles opened the exterior genetic lock.

The system recognized him.

A staircase descended beneath the ruined clinic.

Khloe remained inside the medical vehicle while agents entered.

Gunfire sounded underground.

The communication channel went dead.

Mara ordered Khloe to stay.

Then a live video appeared on Khloe’s tablet.

Miles stood beside Nathaniel’s crib.

The baby was awake.

A sensor had been attached to his chest.

Matteo lay in a chamber behind him.

Federal agents knelt along the wall with their hands bound.

Miles had expected them.

“You made impressive moves today,” he said.

Khloe held the tablet closer.

“Let my son go.”

“Open the final archive.”

“Bring him outside first.”

“You still think negotiation means equal power.”

“I think you need me alive.”

“For another twelve minutes.”

A countdown appeared.

Miles had restarted the succession reset through the original server.

“Come downstairs.”

Khloe looked at Mara.

Mara shook her head.

Miles continued.

“Or I register Nathaniel as my ward and erase every other child from the trust.”

“You cannot erase living people.”

“I can erase their legal identities.”

Khloe opened the vehicle door.

Mara grabbed her arm.

“You just gave birth.”

“And my son is waiting.”

Khloe walked toward the clinic entrance.

Every step pulled against the surgical wound.

Isabella followed under guard.

The underground staircase ended at a steel door.

Miles opened it remotely.

Inside, hundreds of monitors displayed hospital records from across the country.

One screen showed Sebastian in the neonatal unit.

Another showed Avery’s room.

A third displayed Celia in custody.

Miles had never stopped watching.

Nathaniel began crying.

Khloe moved toward him.

Miles raised a weapon.

“Open the archive first.”

Charles approached the genetic terminal.

“It requires all living original partners.”

Miles looked toward Matteo.

“Two are enough when the others are dead.”

“Eleanor is dead.”

“Alexander is dead.”

“Charles is here.”

“And Matteo is alive.”

Isabella moved toward her father.

Miles stopped her.

“Not yet.”

Khloe placed her palm on the archive scanner.

The system requested a second successor profile.

Nathaniel’s.

Miles brought the baby closer.

Khloe touched his tiny hand.

His fingers closed around hers.

The archive began opening.

A final prompt appeared.

RELEASE ORIGINAL DEATH RECORDING?

Khloe remembered Eleanor’s warning.

Do not believe the first recording you see.

She selected YES.

A video appeared.

Eleanor sat at a dinner table six years earlier.

Gabriel stood beside her.

Miles entered carrying a glass of wine.

The recording showed him placing poison inside the glass.

Khloe looked at Miles.

“You killed my mother.”

He smiled.

“That is the first recording.”

The video changed angles.

A second camera showed someone entering after Miles left.

Sebastian appeared on the screen.

May you like

He picked up the poisoned glass.

He carried it directly to Eleanor.
