Chapter 14 - The Friend Who Opened the Door

The hospital evacuation alarm did not activate.

Miles had disabled it.

Thousands of patients, visitors, and employees remained unaware that explosives were armed beneath the building.

Mara dragged Miles toward the control terminal.

“How do we stop the protocol?”

“I do not know.”

Charles struck him.

“You helped design the modern system.”

“I designed the network.”

Miles wiped blood from his mouth.

“Alexander designed the purge.”

Eleven minutes remained.

Sebastian called the police captain.

The call failed.

All cellular signals had been blocked inside the hospital.

Gabriel’s black device still had access to the original Vale network.

Khloe connected it to the core.

“Can we send an evacuation message through my mother’s system?”

Charles began typing.

“It may reach older pagers and fire controls.”

“Do it.”

An alarm finally sounded.

EVACUATE ALL LEVELS.

THIS IS NOT A DRILL.

Above them, staff began moving patients toward emergency exits.

The executive elevators remained locked.

Mara opened manual stairwells through the security controls.

Dr. Shaw continued preparing Avery for delivery.

“We cannot move her.”

“We cannot leave her,” Khloe said.

Avery cried out.

The first twin’s heartbeat dropped.

Dr. Shaw positioned herself.

“Push.”

Nine minutes.

Khloe’s own bleeding continued.

Sebastian pressed surgical gauze against her dress.

“You are getting weaker.”

“I am still standing.”

“You will not be for long.”

“Then use the time I have.”

Miles watched them.

“You always admired that about her.”

Sebastian looked at him.

“What?”

“The refusal to appear afraid.”

Miles smiled.

“You mistook it for coldness.”

Khloe turned toward Sebastian.

The statement struck too close to truths Isabella had exploited.

Miles continued.

“Every time Khloe needed you, you decided her strength meant she did not.”

“Stop talking.”

“That is why Isabella was so easy.”

Sebastian’s jaw tightened.

“She trembled.”

“She cried.”

“She made you feel necessary.”

Khloe did not want to hear the analysis.

It was still true.

Miles looked toward Avery.

“She understood the same weakness.”

Avery stared at him.

“What are you saying?”

“You opened Khloe’s home to us.”

“I was drugged.”

“You gave Isabella the nursery access code weeks earlier.”

Khloe looked at Avery.

Avery’s face went pale.

“She said she was arranging a surprise.”

“You also forwarded Khloe’s private calendar.”

“She said Sebastian wanted to plan appointments.”

“You copied the estate letters.”

Avery began shaking.

“No.”

Khloe remembered finding Owen’s sealed file opened on her desk.

She had blamed housekeeping.

“Avery?”

Her friend started crying.

“I did not know what they were doing.”

“How much did you give them?”

“Everything.”

The confession hurt more because Avery’s fear was genuine.

She had not intended murder.

She had still betrayed every private detail entrusted to her.

Miles had built the conspiracy through small permissions granted by people who preferred convenient explanations.

Avery had opened the first door.

Sebastian had opened another.

Celia had opened dozens.

Dr. Shaw had opened the laboratory.

Every participant claimed not to know what waited on the other side.

Eight minutes.

Avery screamed.

The first baby emerged.

Dr. Shaw caught the tiny child.

“A girl.”

The infant did not cry.

Jonah, now free, brought the neonatal kit.

Dr. Shaw began ventilation.

Khloe watched the child’s chest.

“Come on, Hope.”

A weak cry filled the chamber.

Avery sobbed.

The succession system detected the new heartbeat.

TWIN A REGISTERED.

HOPE VALE THORNE.

Miles smiled.

“One key delivered.”

Mara tightened the restraints around him.

The structural countdown continued.

Seven minutes.

Charles studied the purge map.

“The explosives are divided into three circuits.”

“Can you disable them?” Khloe asked.

“Not remotely.”

“Where are the circuits?”

“One beneath this laboratory.”

“One beneath the main oxygen plant.”

“One beneath the river foundation.”

Sebastian looked at Mara.

“I will take the oxygen plant.”

Mara nodded.

“I will take the foundation.”

Charles pointed toward the floor.

“I stay here.”

Khloe looked at Miles.

“He knows more than he admits.”

“He may also be our only chance.”

Mara pulled Miles upright.

“He comes with me.”

“No.”

Isabella stepped forward.

“Take me.”

Everyone looked at her.

“The river foundation connects to the morgue transport system.”

She checked the map.

“My father’s chamber was sent there.”

Mara studied her.

“You might run.”

“I might.”

Isabella looked at Khloe.

“But if I do, Matteo dies.”

Khloe nodded.

“Go.”

Mara and Isabella entered the river tunnel.

Sebastian kissed Verity’s forehead through the transport cover before leaving for the oxygen plant.

He stopped beside Khloe.

“I should have believed you.”

“This is not the moment.”

“There may not be another.”

“Then make one.”

He looked at her for a long second.

Then he ran.

Six minutes.

Avery’s second child moved lower.

Dr. Shaw examined her.

“The baby is breech.”

“Can you turn him?”

“Not safely.”

Avery’s blood pressure dropped.

Khloe climbed onto the adjacent surgical bed as dizziness swept over her.

Charles opened the floor panel leading to the first circuit.

Wires surrounded a pressure device.

Miles watched from his restraints.

“The red wire is a decoy.”

Charles ignored him.

Miles laughed.

“Alexander knew you would choose logic.”

“Why help us?”

“Because I am beneath the hospital too.”

“You planned an escape.”

“I planned several.”

“Then tell us which wire.”

“The blue.”

Charles reached toward it.

Khloe remembered the tunnel.

Blue lights had marked the trap.

“Stop.”

Charles froze.

“Miles uses Alexander’s patterns.”

She looked at Miles.

“You want him to cut blue.”

Miles smiled.

Khloe pointed to the unmarked black wire.

“That one.”

Charles examined the circuit.

“It bypasses the color system.”

He cut it.

The first circuit disarmed.

Five minutes remained.

Avery screamed again.

The second baby’s legs appeared.

Dr. Shaw worked carefully.

The infant’s body emerged.

The head remained trapped.

The heartbeat slowed.

“Help him,” Avery begged.

Dr. Shaw repositioned the baby.

Khloe held Avery’s shoulders.

“Push again.”

Avery pushed.

The baby emerged into Dr. Shaw’s hands.

A boy.

Silent.

Blue.

“Charles,” Khloe whispered.

Jonah began chest compressions with two fingers.

Dr. Shaw ventilated.

The succession system detected no heartbeat.

Four minutes.

Miles watched the infant.

“If he dies, the prohibited profile disappears.”

Khloe looked at him.

“You wanted this child dead.”

“I wanted the correct child preserved.”

“Children are not corrections.”

The infant remained still.

Dr. Shaw continued.

Avery’s eyes closed.

Her monitor alarmed.

She was hemorrhaging.

Khloe moved between the two beds.

One doctor.

Two mothers.

Two infants.

A hospital about to collapse.

Dr. Shaw looked at Khloe.

“I need to operate on Avery.”

“Do it.”

“The baby may not survive without me.”

Khloe took the ventilation bag.

“Tell me what to do.”

Dr. Shaw guided her hands.

“Small breaths.”

Khloe squeezed once.

Then again.

Jonah continued compressions.

Three minutes.

The laboratory circuit was disarmed.

The other two remained active.

Sebastian reached the oxygen plant.

He found Dr. Alan Reed waiting beside the explosive circuit.

Reed held a gun.

“I am sorry,” he said.

Sebastian stopped.

“You falsified my wife’s pregnancy.”

“Miles had my daughter’s genetic records.”

“You chose him.”

“I chose my family.”

“So did I.”

Reed raised the gun.

Sebastian lunged.

At the river foundation, Mara and Isabella found Matteo’s chamber suspended above dark water.

The explosive circuit was attached beneath it.

Isabella moved toward her father.

Mara grabbed her.

“The circuit first.”

“He is losing oxygen.”

“If the foundation collapses, he dies anyway.”

Isabella looked at the countdown.

Two minutes.

Inside the laboratory, Khloe continued breathing for the silent baby.

“Come on, Charles.”

A faint heartbeat appeared.

Jonah looked up.

“He has a pulse.”

The system registered the child.

CHARLES VALE THORNE.

Avery’s blood filled the surgical tubing.

Dr. Shaw began emergency surgery.

One minute.

Charles looked at the final central relay.

“The other circuits must be disarmed simultaneously.”

Khloe listened through the earpieces.

Sebastian fought Reed beside the oxygen circuit.

Mara cut wires beneath Matteo’s chamber while Isabella held the failing support cable.

“On my count,” Charles said.

“Three.”

Sebastian knocked the gun away.

“Two.”

Mara reached the black wire.

“One.”

All three circuits disconnected.

The countdown stopped at two seconds.

Silence filled the laboratory.

May you like

Khloe exhaled.

Then Avery’s heart monitor became a continuous tone.
