Chapter 15 - The Lowest Floor

Dr. Shaw began chest compressions on Avery.
Jonah ventilated Charles.
Khloe held Hope against a thermal blanket while blood soaked the floor beneath both surgical beds.
“Avery, stay with me.”
No response.
Dr. Shaw injected medication.
The monitor remained flat.
Thirty seconds passed.
Then forty.
Khloe looked at the woman who had betrayed her and carried stolen children for months.
She saw the friend who had sat beside her after her mother’s funeral anniversary.
The assistant who remembered every birthday.
The frightened surrogate who had opened doors without understanding what waited behind them.
Avery had made terrible choices.
She did not deserve to die on Miles’s operating table.
“Again,” Khloe said.
Dr. Shaw continued compressions.
The monitor produced one weak beat.
Then another.
A fragile rhythm returned.
Avery did not wake.
“She needs a trauma operating room,” Dr. Shaw said.
“The hospital is evacuating.”
“We use the upper surgical floor.”
Mara returned through the tunnel with Isabella and Matteo’s mobile chamber.
Sebastian followed minutes later, supporting an injured shoulder.
Dr. Reed was unconscious and restrained near the oxygen plant.
All three explosive circuits were disarmed.
The immediate threat had ended.
The larger system remained under Miles’s control.
Mara checked the core.
“Where is he?”
The chair holding Miles was empty.
One restraint had been cut.
A trail of blood led toward the records passage.
Charles searched the terminal.
“He took Gabriel’s device.”
Without it, they had no secure connection to the Vale network.
Miles also possessed access to the succession system’s portable encryption key.
“He planned the explosives as a diversion,” Khloe said.
Sebastian looked at the newborns.
“What did he need from the delivery?”
“Their live registrations.”
Charles opened the succession records.
Hope and Charles were now listed as active descendants.
Verity remained primary.
The hidden boy remained under Isabella’s guardianship.
Khloe’s unborn daughter remained medically unregistered under the false pregnancy timeline.
Miles had enough verified profiles to rebuild his claim from outside the hospital.
“He is going to the penthouse,” Khloe said.
“To the boy?”
“To the original core backup.”
Sebastian stared at her.
“There is no core backup in our home.”
“The nursery.”
Isabella had photographed herself beside the silver nameplate.
Miles had used the house to hide the boy.
He had likely installed equipment beneath the nursery while construction crews prepared the room.
Sebastian called the penthouse security team through a restored emergency line.
No one answered.
Mara dispatched officers.
The hospital’s upper floors were chaotic.
Patients filled stairwells.
Fire crews searched for remaining explosives.
News helicopters circled the building.
Miles could leave disguised among thousands of evacuees.
Khloe tried to stand.
The room tilted violently.
Sebastian caught her.
Blood continued running down her legs.
Dr. Shaw looked at her and went pale.
“Her abruption is progressing.”
“I am not leaving the children.”
“You will die without surgery.”
Khloe looked toward Verity.
The baby remained inside the transport unit.
Hope and Charles required incubators.
Avery remained unconscious.
Matteo needed ventilation.
Every survivor depended on machines inside a hospital under attack.
Sebastian lifted Khloe into his arms.
She resisted weakly.
“Put me down.”
“No.”
“This is not control.”
His voice broke.
“This is me carrying my wife because she cannot walk.”
Khloe stopped fighting.
He brought her toward the elevator.
The main system remained offline.
They used the emergency lift controlled by Charles.
Dr. Shaw accompanied them.
Mara stayed with Isabella and the children.
As the elevator rose, Khloe rested her head against Sebastian’s shoulder.
“You kissed her.”
“Yes.”
“Did you want to?”
He did not avoid the question.
“For one second.”
The honesty hurt.
“I wanted to feel wanted without having to earn forgiveness for failing you.”
“You had not failed me yet.”
“I had been failing you for months.”
He looked down at her.
“My father died, the company began collapsing, and I decided silence was strength.”
“You punished me for not reading your mind.”
“Yes.”
“And when Isabella made you feel understood?”
“I allowed it.”
Khloe closed her eyes.
“I do not know whether our marriage survives this.”
“I know.”
“You do not get forgiveness because you helped rescue me.”
“I know.”
“You do not get to use our children to keep me.”
“I know.”
The elevator opened onto the surgical floor.
Police officers waited outside.
The police captain stepped forward.
“Sebastian Thorne, you are under arrest.”
Sebastian stopped.
“For what?”
“Conspiracy to commit medical trafficking, fraud, and attempted murder.”
Khloe lifted her head.
The captain displayed an arrest warrant.
It contained Sebastian’s electronic signature on the embryo procedures, the hidden nursery, and the explosive protocol.
Miles had transferred every authorization into Sebastian’s name.
“You know those are false,” Khloe said.
“I know a judge signed the warrant.”
“Which judge?”
“Harold Wren.”
Khloe recognized the name from the files in Sublevel C.
Judge Wren’s paternity records had been manipulated by the Meridian system.
Miles controlled him.
The officers pulled Sebastian’s arms behind him.
Khloe gripped his shirt.
“He stays until I am inside surgery.”
The captain looked at her bleeding dress.
For a moment, humanity overrode procedure.
“He can walk beside you.”
Sebastian kissed her forehead.
“I will find my way back.”
The officers took him after the surgical doors closed.
Khloe was transferred to the operating table.
Dr. Shaw prepared an emergency cesarean delivery.
“What are my daughter’s chances?”
“Good if we move now.”
“And mine?”
Dr. Shaw did not answer.
“Tell me.”
“You have lost significant blood.”
“Will I survive?”
“I will do everything possible.”
Khloe stared at the ceiling.
She thought of Verity’s hand closing around her finger.
Hope’s first cry.
Charles’s first weak heartbeat.
The son sleeping in her nursery under armed guard.
The daughter still inside her, surrounded by blood.
She had entered the hospital believing she was the mother of one child.
She was now responsible for five.
The anesthesia began.
“Do not let Miles take them.”
Dr. Shaw squeezed her hand.
“He will not.”
Khloe’s vision darkened.
Across town, police entered the Thorne penthouse.
The armed guard was gone.
Damian Holt’s wife lay unconscious on the nursery floor.
The crib was empty.
Beneath it, investigators found the hidden core backup.
It had been removed.
Written across the nursery wall was a message.
A MOTHER WHO CANNOT NAME HER SON CANNOT CLAIM HIM.
At St. Aurelia, Khloe’s daughter was delivered without a cry.
Dr. Shaw worked over the tiny body.
Khloe drifted between consciousness and darkness.
“Is she alive?”
No one answered.
May you like
Then a second monitor alarm sounded.
Khloe’s heart stopped.
