Chapter 18 - The False Victory

Khloe stared at the recording.
Sebastian looked younger.
He wore the dark blue suit from the dinner held six years earlier.
He placed the glass beside Eleanor.
They exchanged several words without audio.
Eleanor drank.
Minutes later, she collapsed.
“No.”
Miles watched Khloe’s face.
“Your husband delivered the poison.”
“He did not know.”
“Did he tell you he attended the dinner?”
Khloe remembered Sebastian claiming he had met her mother only twice.
Once at a museum.
Once during their engagement.
The recording proved a third meeting.
A secret one.
“Why was he there?”
Charles examined the timestamp.
“Alexander sent him.”
Miles nodded.
“Our father asked Sebastian to recover trust documents from Eleanor.”
Khloe looked at the screen.
Sebastian left the room before Eleanor collapsed.
“Did he know the glass was poisoned?”
“That is the question.”
Miles appeared almost delighted.
“The answer is inside the archive.”
Khloe refused to let the revelation destroy her focus.
“Release Nathaniel.”
“Finish the succession transfer.”
The countdown showed eight minutes.
Khloe opened the archive’s witness logs.
Sebastian’s recorded statement appeared.
He had been interviewed by Charles one day after Eleanor’s death.
His younger voice filled the room.
Alexander asked me to bring Eleanor the glass.
He said it contained medication that would force her to tell the truth.
I did not know it would kill her.
I saw Miles place something inside it.
I should have stopped him.
I was afraid of my father.
Khloe closed her eyes.
Sebastian had known Miles touched the glass.
He had delivered it anyway.
He had hidden the truth for six years.
Another betrayal.
Another person who claimed fear made him innocent.
Miles leaned closer.
“He married you two years after helping kill your mother.”
“Why did you record the statement?” Khloe asked Charles.
“To preserve evidence.”
“Why did you not tell me?”
“Eleanor’s remaining protectors believed Sebastian could lead us to Alexander’s network.”
“You all used me.”
Charles lowered his head.
“Yes.”
Khloe looked at Nathaniel.
Her son had nothing to do with their sins.
“Complete the transfer,” Miles said.
Instead, Khloe selected RELEASE ALL ARCHIVE RECORDS.
Charles reached toward her.
“Khloe, wait.”
She pressed the command.
Every confession, genetic alteration, payment, and death record began uploading to the regulators and journalists she had authorized earlier.
Miles fired at the terminal.
The bullet shattered the scanner.
The upload continued from the backup.
Mara and federal agents entered through Isabella’s hidden passage.
Weapons surrounded Miles.
He grabbed Nathaniel.
The sensor against the baby’s chest contained an explosive trigger.
“Lower your weapons.”
Mara obeyed.
Miles moved toward the exit with the child.
Khloe stepped in front of him.
“You need me.”
“Not anymore.”
“The transfer failed.”
“The records prove Nathaniel is the oldest male heir.”
“They also prove he was trafficked.”
“Courts take years.”
“Children grow.”
Khloe’s voice remained steady.
“You cannot control him forever.”
“I only need control until the assets transfer.”
Nathaniel cried against his shoulder.
Khloe saw how awkwardly Miles held him.
He had studied genetics without understanding children.
“Give him to me.”
“Move.”
“He is frightened.”
“He will survive.”
“You said that about every person you hurt.”
Miles’s weapon shifted.
Isabella moved behind him.
She reached for Matteo’s chamber controls.
Miles noticed.
He aimed at her.
Mara fired.
The bullet struck Miles’s arm.
Nathaniel slipped.
Khloe lunged.
Her incision tore as she caught her son.
Pain blinded her.
Mara tackled Miles.
Agents restrained him.
Isabella opened Matteo’s chamber.
Her father looked at her.
His eyes moved across the communication board.
My daughter.
Isabella collapsed beside him.
For one extraordinary moment, it appeared finished.
Miles was captured.
Nathaniel was alive.
Matteo was freed.
The archive upload reached one hundred percent.
The succession countdown stopped.
Khloe held her son against her chest.
He became quiet.
Charles pressed gauze against Khloe’s reopened incision.
“You need a hospital.”
“I know one.”
Sebastian called through Mara’s device.
He had seen the archive.
He did not attempt to defend himself.
“Is Nathaniel safe?”
“Yes.”
“Are you hurt?”
“Yes.”
“I am coming.”
“No.”
Khloe looked at the old recording.
“Stay with the children.”
“Khloe.”
“We will speak after they are safe.”
Miles laughed from the floor.
Everyone looked at him.
“You think the archive was the final system?”
Mara tightened his restraints.
“Be quiet.”
“The upload activated the dead-man protocol.”
Charles searched the terminal.
No warning appeared.
Miles smiled at Khloe.
“Eleanor designed it.”
“What protocol?”
“A complete purge of every genetic identity connected to the partnership.”
Charles went pale.
“She planned to destroy the database if it became public.”
“That was the purpose,” Miles said.
“The system will erase itself.”
“That is good,” Khloe answered.
“It will also erase the medical identities of your children.”
Hospital records began disappearing.
Verity’s ventilator authorization vanished.
Hope and Charles’s medication orders disappeared.
Eleanor’s surgical record was deleted.
Nathaniel’s birth registration dissolved.
Across the hospital, alarms announced unknown patients.
Without identities, automated systems suspended treatment authorizations.
Dr. Shaw called in panic.
“The neonatal pharmacy will not release their medications.”
“Use emergency overrides.”
“They require patient identifiers.”
Khloe looked at Charles.
“Stop the purge.”
“I cannot from here.”
“Where?”
“The primary hospital core.”
“Sublevel C.”
“Yes.”
They had escaped the hospital only to be forced back.
Miles continued laughing.
“You have nine minutes before the children become legally nonexistent.”
Khloe handed Nathaniel to Mara.
“Take him to Dr. Shaw.”
“You are bleeding.”
“Charles and I return to St. Aurelia.”
Federal agents lifted Miles.
Khloe looked at him.
“He comes too.”
“Why?”
“Because he knows the modern network.”
Miles smiled.
“You need me.”
“No.”
Khloe’s voice turned cold.
“I need you to watch everything you built disappear.”
They returned to the hospital under emergency escort.
Sebastian met Khloe at the entrance.
His eyes moved to the blood on her clothes.
Then to the recording still playing on the tablet.
“I should have told you.”
“Yes.”
“I did not know the glass would kill her.”
“You knew Miles touched it.”
“Yes.”
“And you carried it anyway.”
“Yes.”
Khloe looked at him.
“Do not ask me for forgiveness.”
“I will not.”
“Help save the children.”
They descended together.
At Sublevel C, the core displayed five fading profiles.
Verity.
Nathaniel.
Hope.
Charles.
Eleanor.
Seven minutes remained.
Charles opened the original code.
“The purge can be stopped by transferring the identities outside Meridian.”
“To where?”
“A new independent trust.”
“Who controls it?”
“The surviving parents.”
Khloe and Sebastian would have to sign together.
The system required marital and biological confirmation.
Khloe stared at the prompt.
Miles had designed the final trap well.
To save the children, she had to legally reaffirm the marriage before learning whether it could survive.
Sebastian saw the conflict.
“Do not sign.”
“The children will lose treatment access.”
“We find another way.”
“There is no time.”
“I will not use them to bind you to me.”
Khloe looked at the countdown.
Four minutes.
She pressed her palm to the scanner.
“This saves their identities.”
“It does not save our marriage.”
Sebastian placed his palm beside hers.
“Understood.”
The transfer began.
At ninety percent, the system stopped.
SECOND MATERNAL GUARDIAN REQUIRED.
Khloe looked at the twins’ records.
Avery was their gestational mother.
She had to sign.
May you like
Avery remained unconscious upstairs.
Three minutes.
