Chapter 4 - The Name Beneath the Ashes

Mara was alive.
The explosion had thrown her against a concrete barrier, leaving her with a fractured wrist and a concussion.
The kidnappers had escaped through a maintenance tunnel before the police secured the loading dock.
Dr. Shaw and Jonah remained missing.
Sebastian returned to Khloe’s room just before dawn.
Smoke stained the shoulder of his tuxedo.
His knuckles were bleeding.
Khloe did not ask what he had struck.
She was staring at the photograph Mara had sent from the loading dock.
ASK KHLOE WHO HER REAL FATHER WAS.
“I do not know what it means,” she said.
Sebastian closed the door behind him.
“Your father was Charles Vale.”
“My father died when I was twelve.”
“Are you certain?”
Khloe looked at him.
“I attended his funeral.”
“That was not my question.”
She lowered the phone.
“My mother never suggested anything different.”
“Celia did.”
“When?”
“Three months before our wedding.”
Khloe felt another piece of their marriage shift beneath her.
“What did she say?”
“That your mother had been involved with Alexander.”
Sebastian’s father.
Khloe stared at him.
“And you married me without telling me that our parents might have had an affair?”
“She said it ended years before either of us was born.”
“You believed her?”
“I believed she was trying to stop the wedding.”
“She was.”
Sebastian looked exhausted.
“She also claimed your mother had stolen documents from Alexander.”
“What documents?”
“She never said.”
Khloe studied him.
Every answer opened another lie.
“Why did you never ask your father?”
“I did.”
“And?”
“He told me Celia was jealous.”
Khloe’s gaze moved toward the hospital window.
Morning light spread across Manhattan.
Below them, reporters had already gathered behind police barricades.
News alerts were appearing on every television channel.
PREGNANT HEIRESS QUESTIONED AFTER HOSPITAL ALTERCATION.
SOCIALITE ISABELLA ROSSI INJURED AT THORNE GALA.
Sources close to Isabella claimed Khloe had become violent after discovering an affair.
No outlet mentioned the kick.
No outlet mentioned the deleted footage.
Someone had controlled the story before the police finished securing the building.
“Where is Isabella?”
Khloe asked.
“Gone.”
Sebastian’s mouth tightened.
“She and my mother used the pharmacy passage to reach a private elevator.”
“Security did not stop them?”
“The elevator had been removed from the active system.”
“Like my father-in-law’s badge.”
“Yes.”
Khloe looked down at the bracelet containing Mara’s drive.
They had not told anyone the original evidence survived.
Not even the police captain.
Especially not the police captain.
Sebastian sat beside the window.
“Miles is not answering his phone.”
“When did you last see him?”
“At the gala.”
“Before or after Isabella attacked me?”
“Before.”
“What did he say?”
Sebastian hesitated.
“He told me you were meeting Owen upstairs.”
Khloe’s skin went cold.
“Owen was not at the gala.”
“I know that now.”
“He sent you to the suite.”
“He said Isabella had followed you because she was worried.”
“Worried about what?”
“That you were preparing to announce our separation.”
Khloe almost laughed.
“Is that what you expected to find when you opened the door?”
“I did not know what to expect.”
“You expected something bad enough that Isabella’s performance made sense.”
Sebastian lowered his eyes.
Khloe realized the attack had not begun inside the suite.
It had begun weeks earlier.
Every photograph.
Every message.
Every missed appointment.
Every moment of silence between them.
Miles and Isabella had been constructing a scene Sebastian was prepared to believe.
A nurse entered with medication.
Khloe checked the label before allowing her to connect it to the intravenous line.
The nurse noticed.
“I understand.”
“Do you?”
The woman nodded toward the security officer outside.
“Everyone on this floor has been told not to administer anything without a second verification.”
“Who gave that order?”
“Dr. Shaw before she disappeared.”
Khloe’s throat tightened.
The nurse handed her a folded piece of paper.
“She also left this in your chart.”
Sebastian stood.
The paper contained three lines in Dr. Shaw’s handwriting.
Do not trust the blood results.
Your mother’s file is in Sublevel C.
Ask why your daughter was tested before conception.
Khloe read the final sentence twice.
“What test?”
Sebastian took the note.
“We completed genetic screening before the fertility treatments.”
“We never had fertility treatments.”
His face changed.
“I was told the embryo screening was part of your prenatal care.”
“Our daughter was conceived naturally.”
“I know.”
“Then why would anyone test her before conception?”
Neither of them spoke.
The answer was impossible.
Unless someone had obtained their genetic material before Khloe became pregnant.
Owen Mercer called.
Khloe answered immediately.
“Where are you?”
“Outside the hospital.”
His voice was strained.
“Your security team will not let me inside.”
“Use the east maternity entrance.”
“It is locked.”
Sebastian took the phone.
“I will authorize him.”
Owen interrupted.
“Do not use the hospital system.”
“Why?”
“Because every authorization request is being forwarded to Miles.”
Khloe exchanged a look with Sebastian.
“How do you know?”
“I received an alert from your mother’s trust.”
“My mother’s trust monitors this hospital?”
“It owns the network controlling the hospital.”
Sebastian went still.
“What did you say?”
Owen exhaled.
“This conversation cannot happen over the phone.”
Khloe’s patience broke.
“People have been attacked and abducted.”
“Then listen carefully.”
Owen lowered his voice.
“St. Aurelia was not founded by the Thorne family.”
Sebastian’s face hardened.
“Everyone knows my grandfather founded it.”
“No.”
Owen continued before he could interrupt.
“Your grandfather was the public chairman.”
“The capital came from Eleanor Vale.”
Khloe’s mother.
“She created a private medical technology trust after developing an early patient-record encryption system.”
Khloe tried to understand.
“My mother taught art history.”
“That was what she wanted the public to believe.”
“Why?”
“Because Alexander Thorne attempted to take the technology from her.”
Sebastian looked toward the door.
“My father?”
“Alexander used the system to build Thorne Meridian’s hospital network.”
Owen’s voice became colder.
“He paid Eleanor through shell companies, buried her patents, and later claimed the platform as a Thorne invention.”
Khloe gripped the phone.
“Why did she allow it?”
“She did not.”
“Then why was there never a lawsuit?”
“Because Alexander had something she valued more than the company.”
Khloe’s eyes moved to the message painted across the loading dock wall.
Ask Khloe who her real father was.
“What did he have?”
Owen did not answer immediately.
“Khloe, your mother’s sealed trust becomes fully accessible when your first child reaches thirty weeks of gestation.”
Khloe looked at the fetal monitor.
She was twenty-nine weeks and four days pregnant.
“In three days?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Eleanor believed pregnancy would be the moment you became most vulnerable.”
Sebastian paced toward the window.
“What happens when the trust opens?”
“Khloe receives controlling authority over St. Aurelia, twelve hospitals, the Meridian patient-data network, and the patent portfolio underlying most of Thorne Meridian’s value.”
Sebastian stopped moving.
Khloe could not speak.
Her mother had left her an empire hidden inside her husband’s company.
Owen continued.
“There is one condition.”
“What condition?”
“The child must be alive.”
Sebastian turned toward Khloe.
The attack suddenly had a financial motive.
Isabella had not merely wanted to destroy their marriage.
Someone needed the baby to die before the trust activated.
“Get inside the hospital,” Khloe said.
“I am trying.”
“Where are the documents?”
“In a biometric vault linked to you.”
“What happens if I die?”
“The trust transfers to your child.”
“And if we both die?”
Owen’s silence lasted too long.
“Control returns to the original partner’s bloodline.”
“Whose bloodline?”
“Alexander Thorne’s eldest biological descendant.”
Sebastian’s face hardened.
“That would be me.”
“No,” Owen said.
A sharp sound came through the phone.
Glass breaking.
“Owen?”
He whispered urgently.
“They found me.”
The call filled with movement.
A door slammed.
Then Miles Thorne’s calm voice came through the speaker.
“Good morning, Khloe.”
Sebastian grabbed the phone.
“Where is Owen?”
“Safe for the moment.”
“You touched my wife.”
“I never touched her.”
“You sent Isabella.”
“I gave Isabella an opportunity.”
Khloe forced herself to remain calm.
“What do you want?”
“You already know.”
“The trust.”
“I want what Eleanor Vale stole from my father.”
Sebastian stared at the phone.
“Your father was Richard Thorne.”
Miles laughed.
“That is the name on my birth certificate.”
Khloe remembered Owen’s statement.
The trust would transfer to Alexander Thorne’s eldest biological descendant.
“Miles is Alexander’s son,” she whispered.
Sebastian’s face emptied.
Miles heard her.
“Very good.”
“You are my brother,” Sebastian said.
“Half brother.”
Miles’s voice remained pleasant.
“And according to Eleanor’s trust, I am older by eleven months.”
Khloe felt the baby move for the first time since the attack.
A small, frightened kick pressed against her palm.
Miles continued.
“In seventy-two hours, Khloe’s child will take control of everything our father spent his life building.”
“What do you want us to do?”
“Renounce the trust.”
“Never,” Khloe said.
“Then Dr. Shaw and her son will die first.”
Khloe closed her eyes.
“Owen will follow.”
Miles’s tone remained conversational.
“After that, Isabella will provide a tragic statement about Khloe’s unstable behavior.”
Sebastian’s hand closed into a fist.
“You will not get near my family.”
Miles laughed softly.
“I already did.”
The call ended.
At that moment, the door to Khloe’s room opened.
A hospital orderly entered carrying breakfast.
Sebastian stepped between him and the bed.
“We did not order food.”
The orderly looked confused.
“It was requested by Mrs. Thorne’s mother.”
“My mother is dead,” Khloe said.
The orderly dropped the tray and ran.
Sebastian chased him into the corridor.
Khloe looked at the untouched cup of tea.
A sweet chemical odor rose from the steam.
Beneath the cup lay a sealed envelope.
Inside was a photograph taken less than an hour earlier.
Dr. Shaw and Jonah were tied to chairs.
Owen lay unconscious behind them.
A clock on the wall displayed 6:14 a.m.

Written across the photograph in red ink were six words.
ONE OF THEM IS YOUR FATHER.
