Chapter 12 - The Path Without Light

Dr. Shaw lowered the transport unit onto the tunnel floor.

Verity’s chest did not rise.

The portable monitor showed no airflow.

“The tube is blocked.”

Sebastian held a light while Dr. Shaw opened the airway kit.

Khloe knelt beside her daughter.

“Fix it.”

“I need space.”

“You have it.”

“You need to move back.”

Khloe forced herself to release Verity’s hand.

Dr. Shaw removed the breathing tube.

A thin clot blocked the tip.

She replaced it with a smaller one.

Sebastian connected the manual ventilation bag.

“Slowly,” Dr. Shaw instructed.

He compressed it.

Verity’s chest rose.

The oxygen monitor remained low.

He compressed again.

The number climbed.

Khloe counted every breath.

At thirty seconds, Verity’s fingers moved.

At forty, color returned to her lips.

Dr. Shaw reconnected the portable ventilator.

“She is breathing with assistance.”

Khloe touched her cheek.

The child was warm.

Alive.

“We cannot remain here,” Mara said.

The copied voice continued through the tunnel speakers.

“Follow the blue lights.”

Red lights pulsed along the other path.

Isabella stared into the darkness.

“How do we know which one is real?”

Khloe remembered her childhood.

Charles had installed small blue lights in the hallway because Khloe feared the dark.

Whenever they played hide-and-seek, he told her to follow them.

Miles had learned that memory from surveillance files or old recordings.

Her real father would know the memory had become predictable.

“He told us not to follow blue.”

Sebastian nodded toward the red path.

“We go right.”

The red tunnel descended steeply.

Mara led.

Sebastian carried Verity.

Dr. Shaw remained beside the ventilator.

Isabella walked behind Khloe with the pistol.

They reached a rusted door.

A black stone ring had been pressed into the locking mechanism.

Khloe placed the photograph beside it.

The pattern matched her father’s ring.

She inserted her thumb into a biometric scanner.

Nothing happened.

Isabella tried her badge.

Nothing.

Sebastian examined the engraving.

“Bloodline verification.”

He pressed his thumb to the scanner.

The lock remained closed.

Khloe tried again while placing her other hand over her stomach.

The scanner turned green.

Two biological profiles had been recognized.

Khloe and her unborn daughter.

The door opened.

Inside was the original Meridian laboratory.

The room looked untouched by time.

Old computers lined the walls.

Glass cabinets contained paper files.

Photographs showed Eleanor, Alexander, Charles, and Matteo working together.

At the center stood a chair connected to a network of monitors.

A man sat in it.

His hair was white.

His face was deeply lined.

The black stone ring remained on his hand.

Khloe stopped breathing.

Charles Vale opened his eyes.

“My little star.”

Khloe crossed the room.

She struck him across the face.

The sound echoed through the laboratory.

Everyone froze.

Charles did not defend himself.

Khloe struck him again with both fists against his chest.

“You left me.”

“I know.”

“You let me think you were dead.”

“I know.”

“You let Mom die.”

His face broke.

“I know.”

Khloe began sobbing.

Charles pulled her against him.

For a moment she became twelve years old again, clinging to the father who had promised never to disappear.

Then she remembered the child inside her.

The baby in Sebastian’s arms.

The hostages.

The lies.

She stepped away.

“You will explain later.”

Charles nodded.

“Miles is preparing Avery in the surgical chamber.”

“How do we stop him?”

“We disconnect the core before 11:42 Friday.”

“That is more than two days away.”

“He moved the reset.”

“To when?”

Charles looked at the clock.

“Forty-seven minutes from now.”

Miles had accelerated the system after Verity’s identity appeared.

He intended to register Avery’s twins and overwrite the succession chain immediately.

Charles moved toward an old control station.

“He cannot complete the transfer without all original-partner signatures.”

“Eleanor and Alexander are dead.”

“Their signatures were digitized.”

“And yours?”

“He has been trying to obtain it for nineteen years.”

Khloe understood why Charles had remained hidden.

His living biometric signature was the final key.

“Why reveal yourself now?”

“Because Verity activated the original protection code.”

Charles looked at the child.

“Eleanor designed the system to contact me if a hidden biological heir was registered.”

“You knew she existed?”

“Not until fifteen minutes ago.”

Mara checked the doors.

“How did Miles obtain access without Charles?”

“Through Matteo,” Charles said.

“Rossi financing gave him a partial partner credential.”

Isabella looked toward the screens.

“My father never would have helped him.”

“He did not.”

Charles opened an old video.

Matteo appeared inside the glass chamber.

His eyes moved across a letter board.

Miles had translated the movements as consent.

Charles slowed the footage.

“He changed the order of the letters.”

Isabella watched the original pattern.

Her father had not said TRANSFER AUTHORITY TO MILES.

He had said CHARLES LIVES BENEATH THE EAST WING.

Miles had hidden Charles’s location even while using Matteo’s communication.

Isabella looked at Khloe.

“I can access the east wing.”

Charles shook his head.

“Miles will expect that.”

“Then give him something he does not expect.”

“What?”

“Me.”

Isabella removed her diamond earrings.

She wiped away the remaining gala makeup.

“He still thinks I want the Thorne name.”

“You do,” Khloe said.

“I wanted what it represented.”

Isabella looked at Verity.

“Now I know what it costs.”

Khloe did not forgive her.

Trusting Isabella would be foolish.

Using her anger might save lives.

“What is your plan?”

Isabella would return to Miles and claim she had captured Charles.

Charles would wear a biometric suppression cuff, preventing the system from reading his signature until the last moment.

Mara would enter through the oxygen tunnels.

Sebastian would move Verity to the emergency neonatal exit.

Khloe would remain with Charles.

“No,” Khloe said.

Sebastian faced her.

“You cannot enter a surgical chamber during a possible abruption.”

“Avery needs to see me.”

“You can speak to her after we rescue her.”

“She believes she betrayed me.”

“She did.”

“She also carried stolen children inside her body while Miles controlled every decision.”

Khloe looked at Charles.

“Can we reach the chamber without using the main corridor?”

“There is a records passage.”

“Then I am going.”

Sebastian’s frustration rose.

“You are risking our daughter.”

“Which one?”

He fell silent.

Khloe continued.

“We now have two daughters in immediate danger and two unborn children whose identities have been stolen.”

“I am trying to protect you.”

“Then stop trying to control where I stand.”

The words landed.

Sebastian nodded slowly.

“All right.”

He did not agree because he believed the risk was small.

He agreed because the decision belonged to her.

They separated.

Sebastian and Dr. Shaw carried Verity toward the neonatal exit.

Mara followed Isabella through the east tunnel.

Charles led Khloe through a narrow records corridor.

The walls contained thousands of sealed medical files.

Khloe saw familiar names on several boxes.

Politicians.

Judges.

Business leaders.

Miles possessed secrets capable of destabilizing families and governments.

“Did my mother know the scale of this?” Khloe asked.

“She tried to destroy it.”

“Why did she fail?”

“Because I stopped her.”

Khloe looked at her father.

Charles’s eyes filled with shame.

“I believed the database could be used to find missing children and expose traffickers.”

“Alexander used it to control inheritance.”

“And I spent nineteen years trying to correct my mistake.”

They reached a glass panel overlooking the surgical chamber.

Avery lay on the operating table.

Dr. Shaw’s son and Owen were tied near the wall.

Miles stood beside a machine displaying the twins’ heartbeats.

Isabella entered through the main door with Mara pretending to be her prisoner.

Miles smiled.

“You finally made the correct choice.”

Isabella raised her pistol toward Mara.

“I brought you Charles.”

Miles looked toward the empty corridor behind them.

“Where is he?”

Isabella smiled.

“Closer than you think.”

Charles pressed his hand to the hidden scanner.

The chamber doors unlocked.

Khloe entered.

Miles’s smile vanished.

Avery turned her head.

“Khloe.”

Khloe approached the surgical table.

“I am here.”

“I am sorry.”

“We survive first.”

Miles moved toward the control panel.

Khloe held up her bracelet.

“You want the security footage?”

“I no longer need it.”

“You need something.”

“I already have it.”

He pressed a button.

The surgical monitor displayed a fetal DNA profile.

Khloe’s unborn daughter’s signature had been captured during the attack.

Miles inserted it into the succession system.

The core began verifying all heirs.

Verity.

Eleanor.

Hope.

Charles.

A fifth profile appeared.

Unknown Male Descendant.

Sebastian stared at the same alert from the neonatal corridor.

Charles went pale.

“That profile should not exist.”

Khloe looked at her father.

“Who is it?”

May you like

Charles whispered the answer.

“Your son.”
