Chapter 13: The Reunion at Blackwater Lake

No one moved.
Jonathan Hale's face filled the screen, older than Richard remembered, but unmistakable.
His silver hair had replaced the dark hair of Richard's childhood. Deep lines framed his eyes, yet there was warmth in them that Richard had not seen in more than twenty years.
"Dad..."
The word escaped Richard before he could stop it.
Jonathan smiled sadly.
"I've imagined hearing you say that again more times than I can count."
Richard's jaw tightened.
"You don't get to disappear for twenty-one years and expect forgiveness."
"I know."
"You let me believe you were dead."
"I know."
"You let me bury an empty coffin."
Jonathan lowered his eyes.
"I know."
Silence settled over the chamber.
Claire had never seen Richard struggle to control his emotions before.
The man who had calmly faced gunfire now looked like a son confronting the father who had abandoned him.
Jonathan looked toward the camera again.
"Grace."
Claire instinctively straightened.
"I've never met you."
"No."
"But I held you the day you were born."
Claire blinked.
"You did?"
Jonathan smiled.
"You wrapped your entire hand around my finger."
"You refused to let go."
A faint smile crossed Claire's face despite everything.
Jonathan continued.
"Your father said you already had his determination."
Richard couldn't help smiling.
"That sounds like William."
Samuel stepped closer to the monitor.
"Jonathan."
"I have one question."
Jonathan nodded.
"Only one?"
Samuel answered firmly.
"Were you ever one of them?"
The smile disappeared from Jonathan's face.
"No."
"I pretended to be."
"For thirty years."
The room fell silent.
Richard frowned.
"You infiltrated the Council."
Jonathan nodded.
"They believed I betrayed Phoenix."
"So did I."
"I know."
Richard's voice hardened.
"You could've trusted me."
Jonathan's expression filled with regret.
"If I had..."
"...you would've died before your thirtieth birthday."
Adrian folded his arms.
"They never trusted Jonathan completely."
"They watched him every day."
Jonathan nodded.
"Every letter."
"Every phone call."
"Every meeting."
"They believed they owned me."
Claire whispered,
"But they didn't."
Jonathan smiled.
"No."
"They underestimated one thing."
"What?"
"A father's patience."
Olivia interrupted.
"I've traced the transmission."
Richard turned.
"Where is he?"
She enlarged a satellite image.
A remote cabin beside a frozen lake.
Dense pine forest.
Miles from the nearest town.
Jonathan looked amused.
"You found me faster than expected."
Richard stared at the screen.
"Blackwater Lake."
Jonathan nodded.
"I've been here for eighteen years."
Claire frowned.
"My father too?"
Jonathan's smile faded.
"He was."
Silence.
Claire's heartbeat quickened.
"What do you mean..."
"...was?"
Jonathan closed his eyes for a long moment.
Richard stepped closer to the screen.
"Jonathan..."
"Tell me."
Jonathan looked directly at Claire.
"I owe you the truth."
He took a slow breath.
"William survived the plane operation."
Claire smiled through tears.
"I knew it."
Jonathan continued.
"He lived."
"He hid."
"He waited."
Her smile slowly disappeared.
Jonathan's voice grew heavy.
"But three months ago..."
"He died."
The chamber fell completely silent.
Claire stood motionless.
"No..."
Jonathan nodded slowly.
"He died peacefully."
"In his sleep."
"He was sixty-eight."
Richard covered his face with both hands.
Twenty-one years.
He had spent twenty-one years searching.
Only to arrive three months too late.
Jonathan reached beside him and lifted a weathered wooden box.
Richard recognized it immediately.
William had built it.
"I promised him I'd deliver this."
Jonathan held it toward the camera.
"He never stopped talking about Grace."
Claire's tears fell freely.
"He knew me?"
Jonathan smiled warmly.
"He knew everything."
"He read every newspaper article."
"Every award you received."
"Every school where you taught."
Claire looked confused.
"How?"
Jonathan laughed softly.
"You think Richard was the only one protecting you?"
Richard looked up.
"What?"
Jonathan nodded.
"Every time someone got too close to Grace..."
"Someone quietly redirected them."
"Every anonymous scholarship."
"Every unexpected job offer."
"Every apartment that became available just when she needed one."
Claire whispered,
"It was him..."
Jonathan smiled.
"It was William."
Daniel lowered his head.
"He watched her..."
"...without letting her know."
Jonathan nodded.
"Because he loved her."
"He also knew seeing him would put her in danger."
Claire held back a sob.
"He sacrificed everything."
"Yes."
Jonathan opened the wooden box.
Inside lay a folded letter.
And...
An old wedding ring.
Emily's ring.
Claire recognized it from photographs.
Jonathan held it carefully.
"The last thing William ever said to me was..."
He smiled sadly.
"'Give Emily's ring to our daughter.'"
Claire covered her mouth.
Jonathan continued.
"And tell Richard..."
Richard looked up.
"...that he kept every promise."
Richard's shoulders began to shake.
For twenty-one years...
He had believed he had failed his best friend.
Now he finally knew the truth.
William had never blamed him.
Not once.
Suddenly...
An alarm sounded inside Jonathan's cabin.
He turned sharply toward the window.
Snow drifted outside.
Black SUVs emerged from the tree line.
Adrian's expression hardened.
"They found him."
Jonathan looked back at the camera.
"I was hoping for one more day."
Richard's face changed instantly.
"We're coming."
Jonathan smiled.
"No."
"You'll never make it in time."
Samuel shouted,
"We'll send helicopters."
Jonathan shook his head.
"They've blocked the valley."
Outside the cabin...
Dozens of armed figures stepped into the snow.
Each wore a silver raven pin.
Jonathan calmly closed the curtains.
He wasn't afraid.
He seemed...
Prepared.
He looked back at Richard one final time.
"My son."
Richard swallowed hard.
"Yes?"
"I spent thirty years trying to save the world."
"I finally realized..."
He smiled gently.
"...saving one family matters more."
Richard nodded, tears in his eyes.
"I know."
Jonathan looked at Claire.
"Grace."
"Your father asked me to tell you one last thing."
Claire stepped closer to the screen.
"He said..."
Jonathan smiled.
"...don't inherit my war."
"Inherit my hope."
The transmission suddenly crackled.
Gunfire echoed outside the cabin.
The front door splintered.
Jonathan calmly picked up an old revolver from the table.
Not to attack.
To buy time.
He looked directly into the camera.
"I love you, son."
The screen went black.
Then one final GPS coordinate appeared before the signal vanished.
Richard stared at the numbers.
His military instincts recognized the location instantly.
Without hesitation, he grabbed his coat.
Samuel looked at him.
"What are you doing?"
Richard's voice was steady once more.
"We're bringing him home."
Claire stepped beside him.
"And my father."
Adrian loaded a fresh magazine into his pistol.
"This ends today."
As the hidden elevator doors opened, Olivia's voice rang through the command center.
"Richard..."
He turned.
She looked at the latest satellite feed, her face pale.
"There aren't twenty men surrounding the cabin anymore."
Richard frowned.
"How many?"
Olivia zoomed out.
The number filled the entire screen.
Not dozens.
Not hundreds.
More than three hundred armed vehicles were converging on Blackwater Lake.
And at the center of the convoy...
Flying from the lead armored truck...
May you like
Was a black flag bearing a single white raven.
