Chapter 6: The Traitor Never Left

The room froze.
No one breathed.
The analyst lay slumped over his keyboard, a crimson stain spreading across the polished floor beneath him. A single bullet wound marked his chest. The words on the wall—THE TRAITOR NEVER LEFT—were still dripping.
Samuel raised his pistol.
"Seal every exit!"
Within seconds, reinforced steel doors slammed shut throughout Phoenix Command.
Emergency lights bathed the operations center in an eerie red glow.
Richard knelt beside the fallen analyst.
His fingers searched for a pulse.
Nothing.
"He’s gone."
Claire turned away, fighting the urge to be sick.
Only an hour earlier, she had been planning a wedding.
Now she was standing inside a secret intelligence headquarters, surrounded by murder.
Samuel's voice cut through the silence.
"Nobody moves."
He looked at every employee in the room.
"No phones."
"No radios."
"No one leaves their station."
The analysts exchanged frightened glances.
Many of them had worked together for years.
Now every face looked suspicious.
Richard stood slowly.
"The killer is still inside."
Daniel frowned.
"How is that possible?"
"The doors locked the moment the shot was fired."
Samuel nodded.
"Exactly."
Claire whispered,
"Which means..."
Richard finished her sentence.
"...the murderer is one of us."
A young analyst named Olivia stepped forward.
"We heard one gunshot."
She pointed toward the server room.
"Then the power failed."
Richard asked calmly,
"How long was the room dark?"
"Maybe eight seconds."
Samuel shook his head.
"Eight seconds is enough."
"For what?"
"To kill."
Claire stared at the bloody message.
"The Traitor Never Left."
She looked toward Richard.
"Do you think Charles wrote that to make us distrust each other?"
Richard didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he walked to the wall.
He examined the handwriting carefully.
Then he closed his eyes.
"I've seen these letters before."
Samuel looked surprised.
"You recognize it?"
Richard nodded.
"Twenty-one years ago."
Claire's heart skipped.
"Where?"
Richard spoke quietly.
"On Emily's front door."
Twenty-One Years Earlier
Rain pounded against the Ashbourne estate.
Richard arrived just minutes after receiving Emily's desperate phone call.
The front door stood open.
Furniture was overturned.
Every room had been searched.
On the front hallway wall...
Written in blood...
Five words.
TRUST NO ONE IN PHOENIX.
Emily was gone.
William was gone.
Little Grace—Claire—was missing.
Richard had never forgotten those words.
Not once.
Back in the present...
Samuel stared at the message on the wall.
"So the same person..."
Richard nodded.
"...is still alive."
Daniel looked confused.
"If someone betrayed Phoenix twenty-one years ago..."
"Why stay inside the organization?"
Samuel answered.
"Access."
Richard continued.
"Phoenix investigated the Ashbourne murders."
"If you're the killer..."
"The safest place to hide..."
"...is inside the investigation."
Claire felt cold.
All these years...
The murderer might have been helping search for themselves.
An alarm sounded from another terminal.
Olivia hurried over.
"Sir..."
She looked frightened.
"Someone accessed the archives."
Richard frowned.
"When?"
"Three minutes before the lights went out."
Samuel's face hardened.
"From which computer?"
Olivia pointed.
"Station Twelve."
Everyone turned.
The chair at Station Twelve sat empty.
The monitor was still on.
A login remained active.
Richard leaned over the keyboard.
"Who uses this station?"
Olivia hesitated.
"Michael."
"Where is Michael?"
No answer.
Samuel immediately barked orders.
"Search the building!"
Four Phoenix agents sprinted down separate corridors.
Claire looked at the employee photograph board.
She found Michael's picture.
Thirty-eight years old.
Cybersecurity specialist.
Employed for eleven years.
No disciplinary record.
Nothing unusual.
Almost...
Too perfect.
Minutes later, an agent returned.
"Sir!"
Samuel looked up.
"The server room is empty."
"What about Michael?"
"Gone."
Richard frowned.
"Impossible."
"The exits are sealed."
The agent swallowed.
"We found this."
He handed Richard a maintenance badge.
Behind it...
A narrow ventilation hatch hung open.
Samuel cursed under his breath.
"He escaped through the maintenance tunnels."
Daniel blinked.
"Someone planned this."
Richard nodded.
"For years."
Claire walked toward Michael's abandoned workstation.
Something caught her attention.
Unlike the other desks...
His was spotless.
No family photos.
No coffee mug.
No notebooks.
Only a single leather-bound journal hidden inside the bottom drawer.
She opened it.
Every page was blank.
Except the last.
Written neatly in black ink...
If you're reading this...
I'm already dead.
Claire frowned.
"What?"
Richard took the journal.
He continued reading.
Charles Prescott is not the mastermind.
Neither is Phoenix.
The organization you're looking for never appears in public.
Its members don't seek power...
They choose who receives it.
Samuel's expression darkened.
"No..."
Richard whispered,
"It can't be."
Claire looked between them.
"What organization?"
Neither man answered.
Instead...
Samuel reached into a locked cabinet.
Inside sat dozens of classified files.
He removed one marked only with a black symbol.
A circle.
Inside it...
A single white raven.
Claire had never seen it before.
Richard had.
His hands tightened around the folder.
"I prayed I'd never have to open this."
Daniel looked at the symbol.
"What is it?"
Richard answered quietly.
"They don't officially exist."
Samuel finished the sentence.
"But every president..."
"Every intelligence director..."
"Every billionaire..."
"...has feared them."
Claire whispered,
"Who are they?"
Richard slowly opened the file.
Inside lay photographs spanning nearly fifty years.
World leaders.
Military generals.
Business tycoons.
Each had one thing in common.
Standing somewhere in the background...
Always slightly out of focus...
Was the same unidentified man.
He never appeared to age.
Never smiled.
Never looked at the camera.
Beneath the photographs, one classified document carried a handwritten title.
PROJECT RAVEN
Claire felt a chill.
Richard stared at the page for several seconds before speaking.
"I investigated them once."
Samuel looked at him.
"You never told me."
"I stopped."
"Why?"
Richard slowly looked up.
"Because everyone who investigated Project Raven..."
"...ended up dead."
Silence filled the command center.
Then Olivia gasped.
"Sir..."
Everyone turned toward her monitor.
She pointed at the security cameras.
Camera after camera...
Every hallway...
Every entrance...
Every rooftop...
Displayed the same figure.
A man wearing a black overcoat.
His face hidden beneath a wide-brimmed hat.
Standing perfectly still.
Watching the building.
Not one man.
Not two.
Dozens.
Every camera showed another identical figure.
They weren't trying to get in.
They were making sure...
No one got out.
Richard's face hardened.
He looked at Samuel and said the words he had hoped never to say again.
May you like
"They've finally come for the Archive."
