Chapter 4: The Man She Trusted

The words hung in the air long after Richard finished speaking.

"...the man hunting you is someone you've trusted your entire life."

Claire felt the blood drain from her face.

Her first instinct was to look at Daniel.

He noticed immediately.

His eyes widened with disbelief.

"You think it's me?"

"No," Richard replied calmly.

"If I thought it was you, you wouldn't be standing here."

Daniel swallowed hard.

"Then who?"

Richard didn't answer.

Instead, he ushered everyone into the armored SUV.

The doors slammed shut with a heavy metallic thud.

Within seconds, the vehicle accelerated away from the hotel, escorted by two black SUVs that seemed to appear from nowhere.

Claire stared out the bulletproof window.

Police cars raced toward the ballroom.

Ambulances flooded the street.

News helicopters circled overhead.

Every television station in the city would be broadcasting the attack within minutes.

Her life as "ordinary Claire Hale" had ended forever.

Inside the SUV, silence settled over the passengers.

The oldest Phoenix agent finally introduced himself.

"My name is Samuel Graves."

Claire looked at him.

"Were you my father's friend?"

Samuel smiled sadly.

"I was his chief of security."

Richard nodded.

"He saved your life once."

Samuel shook his head.

"No."

"Your father saved mine."

Claire's voice trembled.

"What was he like?"

For the first time, Samuel's stern expression softened.

"He laughed loudly."

"He hated expensive suits."

"He never missed your bedtime."

Claire frowned.

"You knew me?"

Samuel reached into his wallet.

Inside was a faded photograph.

A little girl sat on a man's shoulders while another man stood beside them, pretending to salute.

Claire recognized herself immediately.

The smiling man carrying her was her biological father.

The man beside him...

...was Samuel.

Tears blurred her vision.

"I don't remember."

"You were only two."

"I wish I did."

"So do I."

Richard interrupted gently.

"We don't have time for memories."

He turned toward Samuel.

"Tell her."

Samuel hesitated.

"Are you sure?"

"They've already tried to kill her."

"She deserves the truth."

Samuel took a deep breath.

"Your father's real name wasn't simply William Ashbourne."

Claire looked up.

"What do you mean?"

"He was Senator William Ashbourne."

Daniel's eyes widened.

"The senator?"

"The one whose plane exploded over the Atlantic?"

Samuel nodded.

"The official story."

Claire's breathing became uneven.

"I learned about him in school."

"They said it was an accident."

Richard answered quietly.

"It wasn't."

Twenty-one years earlier...

Senator William Ashbourne had become the leading candidate to expose the largest corruption network in modern American history.

The investigation involved politicians.

Corporate executives.

Judges.

Federal contractors.

Organized crime.

For three years, William secretly collected evidence.

Every financial record.

Every witness statement.

Every hidden account.

He stored everything inside what became known as The Ashbourne Archive.

Only four people knew where it was.

William.

His wife Emily.

Richard Hale.

And Samuel Graves.

Three days before William was scheduled to testify before Congress...

His plane exploded.

The government declared it an accident caused by engine failure.

Richard never believed it.

Neither did Samuel.

Because minutes before takeoff...

William had called Richard.

"If anything happens..."

"Protect Emily."

"Protect Claire."

"And never trust anyone wearing a government badge."

Claire stared silently.

Everything she had believed about her life was collapsing piece by piece.

"So..."

"My parents died because of an investigation?"

Richard nodded.

"Yes."

"And people are still trying to hide it?"

"Yes."

"After twenty-one years?"

Richard looked directly into her eyes.

"They're not hiding the murder anymore."

"They're hiding what your father discovered."

Daniel leaned forward.

"What exactly did he discover?"

Samuel answered.

"Names."

"What names?"

"The people who built their fortunes through murder, bribery, trafficking, and political corruption."

Daniel frowned.

"They've stayed hidden for two decades?"

Richard smiled without humor.

"Powerful people don't disappear."

"They simply become more powerful."

The SUV entered an underground parking garage beneath an unmarked office building.

Three armed guards checked the vehicle before the steel gates slowly opened.

Claire looked around.

"Where are we?"

Richard answered.

"The safest place left."

Samuel corrected him quietly.

"For now."

They entered a private elevator that required both fingerprints and a retinal scan.

The doors opened onto an entire floor filled with computer servers, maps, surveillance screens, and analysts working quietly.

Claire stopped walking.

"What is this?"

Samuel answered.

"Phoenix Command."

Richard added,

"We've spent twenty-one years preparing for today."

Claire stared at dozens of photographs pinned across an enormous wall.

Pictures of politicians.

Business leaders.

Judges.

Military officers.

Each photograph was connected by red strings.

Some had dates.

Others had bank account numbers.

Several faces were crossed out in black.

One wall displayed only newspaper headlines.

SENATOR ASHBOURNE DIES IN TRAGIC CRASH

CASE OFFICIALLY CLOSED

SOLE HEIR BELIEVED DEAD

Claire whispered,

"You never stopped investigating."

Richard looked at the wall.

"I couldn't."

"I promised your mother."

A young analyst hurried toward them.

"Sir."

Richard turned.

"What is it?"

"The vault wasn't completely emptied."

Samuel's eyes narrowed.

"How much survived?"

The analyst handed Richard a flash drive.

"This."

Richard examined it carefully.

"No label?"

"None."

"But it was hidden inside the false floor."

Samuel smiled for the first time.

"Emily."

Richard nodded.

"She always planned for the worst."

Claire watched Richard insert the flash drive into an isolated computer.

The screen flickered.

A password prompt appeared.

No words.

Only one line.

ENTER THE CHILD'S TRUE NAME

Claire frowned.

"My true name?"

Samuel shook his head.

"No."

Richard looked at Claire.

"Your mother never called you Claire."

Silence filled the room.

Claire's heartbeat quickened.

"What did she call me?"

Richard smiled sadly.

"It was the first word you ever recognized."

"You'd laugh every time she said it."

Claire searched her memory.

Nothing.

Richard slowly typed six letters.

GRACE

The computer chimed.

The files unlocked.

Claire stared.

"Grace?"

Richard nodded.

"Your birth name."

"Grace Ashbourne."

She covered her mouth.

For twenty-one years...

She hadn't even known her real first name.

Thousands of documents filled the screen.

Financial records.

Photographs.

Audio recordings.

Confidential government files.

Then one folder appeared.

IF GRACE IS ALIVE

Richard clicked it.

A single video opened.

Static filled the screen.

Then...

A woman appeared.

Young.

Beautiful.

Smiling gently.

Claire gasped.

Her knees nearly gave way.

"My mother..."

Emily Ashbourne looked directly into the camera.

"If you're watching this..."

"...then I couldn't protect you."

Tears rolled freely down Claire's face.

"I love you more than anything in this world."

"If Richard kept his promise..."

"You grew up knowing kindness instead of fear."

Emily smiled softly.

"There's something I need you to know."

She reached beside the camera and held up a photograph.

Claire froze.

It showed William Ashbourne...

Standing beside another man.

Both smiling.

Both shaking hands.

Richard's expression darkened instantly.

Samuel cursed under his breath.

Daniel stared at the screen in disbelief.

Claire whispered,

"Who is he?"

Richard answered with quiet horror.

"The man your father trusted more than anyone."

Emily's smile vanished.

Her next words changed everything.

"If you're seeing this..."

"...don't ever let Charles Prescott know you're alive."

The room fell silent.

Daniel slowly turned toward Richard.

Then toward Claire.

Finally...

Toward the television mounted on the far wall.

Breaking news flashed across the screen.

CHARLES PRESCOTT ANNOUNCES HIS CAMPAIGN FOR PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES.

And standing proudly beside Charles Prescott...

Smiling for every camera...

May you like

...was Evelyn Prescott. Her mother-in-law-to-be.
