Chapter 3: The First Bullet

The second gunshot shattered the grand chandelier.

Thousands of crystal fragments exploded across the ballroom like frozen rain.

Guests screamed.

Tables overturned.

Champagne glasses crashed onto the marble floor.

The orchestra abandoned their instruments and dove for cover.

Claire barely realized she had been thrown to the ground until she felt Richard's arm shielding her head.

"Stay down!" he barked.

Another shot cracked through the broken windows.

This one struck a marble column, sending chips of stone flying across the room.

The three men wearing silver phoenix pins reacted instantly.

One dragged a heavy banquet table onto its side as cover.

Another drew a concealed handgun and positioned himself between Claire and the windows.

The oldest man never flinched.

Instead, he calmly pressed a finger to the small microphone hidden behind his collar.

"Phoenix Command."

His voice remained steady.

"Protect the heir."

The words echoed inside Claire's head.

The heir.

She hated that word.

For twenty-one years, she had fought to be an ordinary woman.

Now strangers were willing to die for a title she had never wanted.

Richard gripped her shoulder.

"Claire."

She looked at him.

His expression had changed.

The gentle father who had spent years fixing bicycles and making pancakes on Sunday mornings was gone.

In his place stood someone harder.

Sharper.

A man accustomed to making life-and-death decisions in seconds.

"When I say run," he said quietly, "you don't look back."

Her eyes widened.

"Dad—"

"No arguments."

"I won't leave you."

"You aren't."

His lips curved into the faintest smile.

"You're trusting me."

Another bullet punched through the ballroom wall.

Dust filled the air.

Daniel crawled toward them on his hands and knees.

Blood trickled down his forehead from a cut caused by falling glass.

"Claire!"

She reached toward him instinctively.

Richard caught her wrist.

"Not yet."

Daniel stared at him in disbelief.

"What are you doing?"

"We have to get out!"

Richard's eyes never left the shattered windows.

"I don't know if he's the target."

Daniel frowned.

"What?"

"If they only came for Claire..."

"They won't waste ammunition on anyone else."

The realization hit Daniel like ice water.

"They're trying to kill her?"

Richard answered without hesitation.

"Yes."

Evelyn Prescott screamed from behind the overturned stage.

"My leg!"

A crystal shard had sliced deeply into her calf.

Guests rushed to help her.

She pointed furiously toward Claire.

"This is her fault!"

"If she hadn't come—"

Richard slowly turned his head.

Even in the chaos, his voice carried an unmistakable authority.

"My daughter didn't bring violence into this room."

"The people hunting her did."

A fourth shot rang out.

This one came from a different direction.

Richard's eyes narrowed.

"Two shooters."

The oldest Phoenix agent nodded.

"East balcony."

"West garden."

"They're coordinating."

Claire felt sick.

This wasn't random.

Someone had planned every detail.

The charity gala.

The public humiliation.

The timing.

Even Richard revealing her identity.

Someone had expected all of it.

Outside...

A black van accelerated away from the service entrance.

Inside sat a man wearing dark gloves.

He lowered his rifle and spoke into a satellite phone.

"Confirmation."

"The girl is alive."

A distorted voice answered.

"I know."

"Did you eliminate her?"

"No."

A pause.

"Richard Hale anticipated us."

The caller remained silent for several seconds.

Finally—

"Then move to Phase Two."

The line disconnected.

The sniper looked back toward the ballroom.

He almost felt sorry for Claire.

The bullets had never been the real plan.

Inside the ballroom...

Emergency alarms finally began blaring.

Red lights flashed overhead.

Smoke-control vents opened automatically.

Guests poured toward the exits.

The crowd quickly became a stampede.

Richard grabbed Claire's hand.

"Now."

They sprinted toward a side corridor.

Daniel followed close behind.

Evelyn shouted after them.

"Daniel!"

"Don't go with them!"

"You'll ruin your future!"

Daniel never slowed.

"My future is with Claire."

Richard glanced sideways.

"Maybe."

Daniel frowned.

"What does that mean?"

"It means you still have questions to answer."

Before Daniel could respond, they reached a heavy steel fire door.

One of the Phoenix agents typed a code into a small keypad hidden beneath his watch.

The door clicked open.

Claire stared.

"How did you know this was here?"

The old man smiled faintly.

"We designed this building."

"What?"

"Twenty-five years ago."

Richard wasn't surprised.

"The Ashbourne Foundation funded its construction."

Claire froze.

"This ballroom..."

"...belongs to my family?"

"It always did."

The realization stole her breath.

She had attended charity events here for years.

Worked volunteer dinners.

Raised money for children's hospitals.

She had never known she was standing inside a building her parents had paid to create.

The fire corridor echoed with hurried footsteps.

As the group descended the concrete stairwell, Claire noticed something strange.

The Phoenix agents weren't protecting Richard.

They weren't protecting themselves.

Every movement centered around her.

She felt trapped by invisible expectations.

"Dad..."

Richard looked back.

"I don't want this."

"I know."

"I don't want money."

"I know."

"I don't want a family empire."

"I know."

"Then why can't we just leave?"

Richard stopped walking.

For a long moment, neither of them spoke.

Finally he answered.

"Because the people who murdered your parents don't care what you want."

"They only care that you exist."

Silence.

The words settled heavily between them.

At the bottom of the stairs, another Phoenix agent waited beside an armored SUV.

The vehicle looked more military than civilian.

Bullet-resistant glass.

Reinforced tires.

Encrypted communications equipment.

Daniel stared.

"Who are these people?"

The old gentleman opened the rear door.

"We served your father."

"What exactly did he do?"

The old man looked at Claire.

"That story belongs to her."

Before anyone could continue—

Richard's phone vibrated.

Only one person still possessed that private number.

He answered immediately.

"Hale."

The voice on the other end sounded urgent.

"They've entered the vault."

Richard's face lost all color.

"What?"

"The Ashbourne archives."

"They're taking everything."

Richard closed his eyes.

"How much time?"

"Less than thirty minutes."

The line went dead.

Claire had never seen fear on Richard's face before.

Not once in her life.

Until now.

"What happened?"

Richard looked directly into her eyes.

"The documents."

"What documents?"

"The evidence your mother spent years collecting."

Claire frowned.

"What evidence?"

Richard's voice dropped to almost a whisper.

"The proof that your parents were never killed in a plane crash."

Daniel blinked.

"What?"

Richard inhaled slowly.

"They were murdered..."

"...by someone who is still alive."

The Phoenix agents exchanged grim looks.

The oldest among them opened the SUV door wider.

"We have to move."

Richard didn't.

Instead, he looked back toward the burning ballroom.

Toward the city skyline beyond.

Then he said the words that chilled everyone present.

"I know who's behind this."

Claire's heart pounded.

"You do?"

Richard nodded once.

"For twenty-one years..."

"I prayed I was wrong."

His jaw tightened.

"But after tonight..."

"There can be no doubt."

Claire whispered,

"Who is it?"

Richard looked at the engagement ring still on her finger.

Then at Daniel.

Finally, he spoke.

"The man hunting you..."

May you like

"...is someone you've trusted your entire life."
