Chapter 8: The Man Who Never Died

The name echoed through the command center.

"Victor..."

Richard's voice was barely audible.

Yet everyone heard it.

Claire looked from the security monitor to Richard's pale face.

"Dad..."

"Who is Victor?"

Richard didn't answer.

For several long seconds, he simply stared at the screen, as if he were looking at a ghost.

Samuel slowly lowered his pistol.

His normally steady hands were trembling.

"No..."

"I watched him die."

The man on the monitor smiled, almost as if he had heard the words.

He adjusted the cuff of his charcoal-gray suit and continued walking through the smoke-filled underground garage with slow, deliberate steps.

Not a single bodyguard followed him.

He didn't need one.

Every Phoenix security officer in the garage was unconscious—but alive.

No blood.

No bodies.

Just silence.

Richard noticed immediately.

"He doesn't kill unless he has to."

Samuel nodded grimly.

"That hasn't changed."

Claire stepped closer to the monitor.

Victor appeared to be in his early sixties.

Tall.

Silver hair.

Calm blue eyes.

He looked more like a university professor than the leader of a hidden organization.

Yet something about him made the room feel colder.

Daniel frowned.

"He came here alone?"

Samuel answered.

"Victor never works alone."

"What do you mean?"

Richard zoomed in on the security feed.

"There."

Daniel squinted.

"I don't see anything."

Richard pointed toward the polished concrete floor.

A faint reflection.

Several shadows moved just outside the camera's field of view.

At least twelve people.

Perfectly synchronized.

"They stay invisible," Samuel said quietly.

"Victor always walks into the room alone."

"But he is never alone."

The elevator alarm sounded.

LEVEL B3 ACCESSED.

Olivia looked up in horror.

"He's inside."

Samuel barked orders.

"All defensive teams to Level B2."

"No one engages without my command."

Phoenix agents rushed through reinforced corridors.

The headquarters, hidden for decades beneath an ordinary office building, had been designed to withstand military assault.

But no one had designed it to withstand Victor.

Claire looked at Richard again.

"You know him."

Richard finally nodded.

"I did."

"Were you friends?"

A long silence.

Then—

"He was William's best friend."

The room fell silent.

Claire stared.

"My father's..."

"Best friend."

Richard closed his eyes.

"For almost twenty years."

Samuel added quietly,

"We trusted him with everything."

Daniel whispered,

"And he betrayed you."

Richard shook his head.

"We don't know that."

Samuel turned sharply.

"Richard!"

"He disappeared the night William died!"

"I know."

"He faked his death."

"I know."

"He's standing outside our headquarters!"

Richard remained calm.

"I still don't know why."

The elevator cameras switched on automatically.

Victor stepped inside.

Instead of pressing a button...

He simply stood with his hands folded behind his back.

The elevator descended on its own.

Claire frowned.

"He didn't touch anything."

Olivia typed rapidly.

"Our system accepted his credentials."

Samuel's expression hardened.

"He still has access."

Richard whispered,

"Someone never revoked it."

Claire looked around the command center.

"So someone inside Phoenix..."

"...has been protecting him."

No one answered.

Because everyone knew she was right.

The elevator stopped on Level B2.

Its doors slid open.

Six armed Phoenix agents aimed rifles.

"Hands where we can see them!"

Victor smiled warmly.

"Good evening."

One agent stepped forward.

"Identify yourself."

Victor reached slowly into his jacket.

Several rifles clicked off safety.

Instead of a weapon...

He produced an old leather wallet.

Inside was a faded identification card.

Richard stared at the monitor.

His heart stopped.

The card displayed one name.

Victor Sterling

Co-Founder – Phoenix Initiative

Daniel blinked.

"Co-founder?"

Samuel whispered,

"He built Phoenix..."

"...with William."

Victor calmly handed the card back.

"I'm here to speak with Richard Hale."

"No one else."

The agents didn't move.

Victor sighed.

"I was hoping we could avoid this."

He glanced toward the ceiling.

"Richard."

"I know you're watching."

His voice echoed through every speaker in the headquarters.

"You've always been stubborn."

Richard stepped toward the microphone.

"So have you."

Victor smiled.

"It's been twenty-one years."

"Too long."

Richard's face remained expressionless.

"You should be dead."

Victor chuckled softly.

"So should William."

The room froze.

Claire's heart nearly stopped.

"What did he say?"

Richard grabbed the microphone tighter.

"What do you mean?"

Victor's smile disappeared.

"I mean exactly what I said."

Samuel stared in disbelief.

"No..."

Richard's breathing became uneven.

"Don't play games."

Victor spoke calmly.

"I'm too old for games."

He looked directly into the security camera.

"William Ashbourne did not die in that plane explosion."

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Claire felt as if the floor had vanished beneath her feet.

"My father..."

Richard whispered,

"No..."

Victor nodded slowly.

"He survived."

Claire couldn't breathe.

Richard slammed his fist onto the control console.

"Then where is he?"

Victor looked genuinely sad.

"I don't know."

Samuel shouted,

"You're lying!"

Victor's expression hardened.

"If I were lying..."

"I would've told you he died."

Claire's mind raced.

Her father...

Alive?

Impossible.

For twenty-one years she had mourned a man she had never known.

Now someone claimed he had survived.

Richard's voice shook for the first time.

"I searched."

"I searched every country."

"I searched every intelligence network."

"I buried an empty coffin."

Victor nodded.

"I know."

"I attended the funeral."

Samuel stared.

"You weren't there."

Victor smiled sadly.

"You just didn't recognize me."

Suddenly—

Olivia interrupted.

"Sir!"

She looked terrified.

"I found something."

Every monitor switched to an archived airport surveillance recording.

The timestamp read:

Twenty-One Years Ago

The grainy footage showed William Ashbourne boarding his private jet.

Then...

Exactly thirty-seven seconds before takeoff...

Another man boarded through the rear staircase.

The camera zoomed.

Claire gasped.

It was Victor.

Richard whispered,

"So you were on the plane."

Victor nodded.

"I was."

Daniel leaned toward the screen.

"Then how are you alive?"

Victor answered quietly.

"Because..."

"...that wasn't William's plane."

Confused murmurs spread throughout the command center.

Richard frowned.

"What?"

Victor looked directly into the camera.

"The explosion everyone watched..."

"...was staged."

Claire shook her head.

"That makes no sense."

Victor continued.

"There were no passengers."

"No crew."

"No William."

"No Emily."

Samuel's face turned pale.

"If that's true..."

Victor finished the sentence.

"...then someone wanted the world to believe the Ashbourne family was dead."

Richard whispered,

"Emily..."

Victor lowered his head.

"Emily died."

Claire closed her eyes as tears streamed down her face.

"My mother..."

Victor nodded.

"I couldn't save her."

"But William escaped."

Richard's voice cracked.

"Where?"

Victor slowly looked away from the camera.

"I've spent twenty-one years trying to answer that same question."

Before anyone could speak again—

Every screen suddenly flashed white.

An unauthorized transmission interrupted the security system.

A distorted voice echoed through the headquarters.

"You've heard enough."

Victor's face changed instantly.

For the first time...

He looked alarmed.

"Richard..."

"Get Claire out of the building."

"Now."

The voice laughed.

"You always were sentimental, Victor."

Then a countdown appeared on every monitor.

03:00

02:59

02:58

Olivia's hands flew across her keyboard.

"Oh my God..."

Richard turned sharply.

"What is it?"

She looked up, her face drained of color.

"The entire headquarters has been rigged with military explosives."

Samuel whispered,

"Since when?"

Olivia swallowed.

"The system log says..."

"They were installed..."

May you like

"...twenty-one years ago."
