Chapter 9: The Clock Beneath Phoenix

The countdown continued.

02:41

02:40

02:39

Every second echoed through Phoenix Command like a heartbeat.

No one spoke.

No one moved.

Claire stared at the numbers flashing across every monitor, trying to convince herself they weren't real.

Richard was the first to react.

"Samuel."

"Evacuate everyone."

Samuel immediately shook his head.

"If we all run, no one will stop them from taking the files."

Richard's voice hardened.

"The files don't matter anymore."

Claire looked at him in surprise.

For twenty-one years, he had dedicated his life to protecting the Ashbourne evidence.

Now he was willing to abandon it.

Richard met her eyes.

"I promised your mother I'd protect you."

"Not paper."

Victor's face was still visible on one surviving security monitor.

"Richard."

"There isn't enough time."

"Then help us."

"I can't."

"Why?"

Victor looked away.

"Because I'm not inside."

Samuel frowned.

"What?"

Victor slowly raised his wrist toward the camera.

A black electronic bracelet circled it.

"I've been their prisoner for eighteen years."

Silence filled the room.

Daniel stared.

"You're wearing a tracker."

Victor nodded.

"If I leave the permitted zone..."

"They kill me."

Richard whispered,

"They broke you."

Victor smiled sadly.

"No."

"They failed."

02:15

Emergency lights shifted from red to amber.

Olivia worked furiously at her keyboard.

"I've isolated the explosive network."

"Can you stop it?"

"No."

"Why?"

She swallowed hard.

"Because it isn't connected to our system."

Samuel's face darkened.

"It's independent."

Richard understood immediately.

"They expected Phoenix to be compromised."

Claire suddenly remembered something.

"The wooden box."

Richard frowned.

"What about it?"

"My father."

"He said everything had a purpose."

She grabbed the walnut box from the conference table.

At first glance, it appeared empty.

But as she turned it over...

She heard something rattle.

Tiny.

Metallic.

Samuel took a flashlight.

"There."

Hidden beneath the velvet lining was a narrow brass key.

No label.

No markings.

Richard smiled for the first time in hours.

"William."

Claire looked up.

"He left another message."

Samuel searched the room.

"A key requires a lock."

Olivia interrupted.

"There's one place."

She pointed toward the far end of the command center.

A steel door no one had ever opened.

Daniel frowned.

"I've never noticed that."

Richard answered quietly.

"Neither did I."

The door had blended perfectly into the concrete wall for decades.

Above it...

Barely visible beneath layers of old paint...

was the Ashbourne family crest.

A phoenix rising through flames.

01:46

Claire inserted the brass key.

Nothing happened.

She turned it once.

A deep mechanical rumble echoed beneath the building.

Dust drifted from the ceiling.

The wall slowly separated down the middle.

Behind it...

A narrow staircase descended into darkness.

Cold air rushed upward.

Samuel whispered,

"There's another level."

Richard stared in disbelief.

"We never found this."

Claire looked at him.

"My father hid something."

Richard nodded.

"He hid it from everyone."

They descended together.

The staircase spiraled deeper than anyone expected.

Thirty feet.

Fifty.

Seventy.

Finally...

They reached a circular chamber unlike anything above.

The walls were carved from solid granite.

No computers.

No weapons.

No surveillance.

Only bookshelves.

Thousands of leather-bound journals.

Claire walked slowly between them.

Each spine carried only a year.

Dozens of years.

Richard removed one carefully.

Inside...

Every page was handwritten.

Samuel's eyes widened.

"He documented everything."

Richard nodded.

"No digital files."

"No servers."

"No hackers."

Claire smiled faintly.

"My father didn't trust computers."

Richard laughed quietly.

"He trusted pencils."

At the center of the chamber stood a marble pedestal.

Resting on top...

A sealed envelope.

Across the front...

Written in William Ashbourne's unmistakable handwriting...

For Grace

Claire's hands shook as she opened it.

Inside was a single sheet of paper.

It contained only one sentence.

If you found this room, you've already won.

Daniel frowned.

"Won?"

Claire turned the page over.

There was more.

A map.

Not of a city.

Not of a country.

Of the building.

Richard studied it.

His expression changed.

"Oh..."

Samuel stepped closer.

"What?"

Richard pointed.

"The explosives."

Claire looked carefully.

Small red Xs marked dozens of locations.

Every one corresponded with the countdown system Olivia had identified.

Richard smiled.

"They're fake."

Olivia blinked.

"What?"

Richard handed her the map.

"William built this headquarters."

"If he marked every charge..."

"He also knew something else."

Olivia read the handwritten note beneath the map.

Then she laughed in disbelief.

"They're demolition decoys."

Daniel frowned.

"I don't understand."

Olivia looked up.

"There are explosives."

"But not enough to destroy the building."

"They're designed to force an evacuation."

Samuel's eyes narrowed.

"So the countdown..."

"...is psychological."

Richard nodded.

"They want us to run."

Claire whispered,

"So they can search the building."

00:58

The countdown continued.

Richard looked toward the hidden chamber.

Then back toward the monitors upstairs.

"They think we've panicked."

Samuel smiled.

"For the first time..."

"We know something they don't."

Suddenly...

Claire noticed another envelope hidden beneath the first.

Smaller.

Addressed to Richard.

He opened it slowly.

His face lost all color after reading the first line.

Samuel frowned.

"What is it?"

Richard silently handed him the letter.

Samuel read.

Then lowered it.

"No..."

Claire stepped closer.

"What does it say?"

Richard looked at her with tears in his eyes.

"Your father knew."

"Knew what?"

Richard's voice barely rose above a whisper.

"He knew there would be another traitor."

Claire froze.

Samuel continued reading aloud.

Richard,

If you're reading this, someone close to you has betrayed Phoenix again.

Don't waste time searching the organization.

The betrayal will come from someone you love like family.

Daniel's expression tightened.

Claire slowly looked around the chamber.

Richard.

Samuel.

Daniel.

Olivia.

Every face suddenly seemed different.

Then—

A gun clicked behind them.

The sound echoed through the stone chamber.

No one moved.

A familiar voice broke the silence.

"I'm sorry."

Claire turned slowly.

Daniel stood at the entrance.

His hands were shaking.

A pistol pointed directly at Richard.

Tears filled his eyes.

"I never wanted it to happen this way."

Richard stared at him.

"Daniel..."

Daniel's voice cracked.

"They've had my little sister for six years."

Claire felt her world collapse.

"No..."

Daniel closed his eyes.

"I didn't betray you because I hated you."

"I betrayed you..."

May you like

"...because they gave me no choice."
