Chapter 7: The Last Will of William Ashbourne

The command center fell silent.

Every monitor displayed the same impossible image.

Men dressed in identical black overcoats stood outside every entrance to the Phoenix headquarters.

None of them moved.

None of them spoke.

They simply watched.

Claire counted at least twenty.

Samuel stopped her.

"There are more."

He zoomed out one satellite feed.

Dozens became hundreds.

Street corners.

Parking garages.

Office rooftops.

Nearby intersections.

Every escape route had been quietly surrounded.

Daniel whispered, "They're not assassins."

Richard nodded.

"No."

"They're making a statement."

"What kind?"

Richard's answer was simple.

"They don't think we'll leave."

A calm female voice echoed through the building.

"External communications have been blocked."

Phones lost their signal.

Satellite connections disappeared.

Internet access vanished.

Olivia looked up from her workstation.

"They're jamming every frequency."

Samuel frowned.

"Military-grade equipment."

Richard folded his arms.

"They've prepared this operation for months."

Claire looked around.

"So we're trapped?"

Richard looked directly at her.

"No."

"They're trapped with us."

Daniel stared at him.

"You sound very confident."

Richard smiled faintly.

"I've been waiting twenty-one years."

Samuel walked toward a reinforced steel cabinet built into the wall.

Instead of using a key...

He placed both palms against a biometric scanner.

Nothing happened.

He looked confused.

"It should have opened."

Olivia frowned.

"The system rejected your authorization."

Samuel tried again.

Still nothing.

Richard stepped forward.

"Let me."

His fingerprints were rejected as well.

Silence.

Then a mechanical voice spoke through hidden speakers.

"Primary authorization revoked."

Samuel's face darkened.

"The traitor."

Richard nodded.

"They changed the security hierarchy."

Claire looked at the cabinet.

"What's inside?"

Richard answered quietly.

"My last promise to your father."

Olivia suddenly gasped.

"The system's asking for a new authorization."

Every monitor displayed the same message.

ONLY THE LEGITIMATE ASHBOURNE HEIR MAY CONTINUE.

Claire frowned.

"What?"

Samuel slowly turned toward her.

"Go."

"I don't know what to do."

"Neither did your father."

Richard gently placed a hand on her shoulder.

"Just trust yourself."

Claire stepped toward the scanner.

Her heart pounded.

The machine projected a thin blue light across her face.

Another across her eyes.

Then...

A tiny needle emerged.

Daniel instinctively moved forward.

Richard stopped him.

"It's only taking a blood sample."

Three seconds later...

The entire headquarters shook.

Heavy locks disengaged deep within the walls.

The steel cabinet slowly opened.

Everyone expected stacks of classified files.

Or gold.

Or weapons.

Instead...

There was only one small wooden box.

No larger than a shoebox.

Made of dark walnut.

Beautifully carved.

Claire reached toward it.

Samuel quietly whispered,

"Your father made that himself."

She froze.

"He..."

"He loved woodworking."

Richard smiled sadly.

"He said building things reminded him that not everything in life had to be destroyed."

Claire gently lifted the box.

Inside rested three items.

An old silver pocket watch.

A wedding ring.

And...

A VHS videotape.

Nothing else.

Daniel looked confused.

"That's it?"

Richard shook his head.

"No."

"That's everything."

Olivia found an old media player in storage.

Minutes later...

The tape began playing.

Static filled the screen.

Then the image cleared.

William Ashbourne appeared.

Not as the polished senator from history books.

He wore jeans.

A flannel shirt.

Sawdust covered his sleeves.

Behind him stood the half-finished wooden box now resting in Claire's hands.

He smiled warmly.

"If you're watching this..."

"...then I wasn't lucky enough to watch you grow up."

Claire's breathing caught.

Hearing his voice made him suddenly real.

Not a photograph.

Not a newspaper headline.

Her father.

William laughed softly.

"Grace..."

"I know Richard probably changed your name."

"He would've thought it was safer."

Richard lowered his head.

"I did."

William continued.

"If he did..."

"He was right."

Claire smiled through tears.

Even after twenty-one years...

Her father had understood Richard perfectly.

William picked up the silver watch.

"This belonged to your grandfather."

He opened it.

Inside the cover...

A tiny photograph of baby Grace.

"I wanted to give it to you on your eighteenth birthday."

He chuckled.

"Looks like I'm running a little late."

Several analysts quietly wiped tears from their eyes.

William's expression slowly became serious.

"If you're seeing this..."

"It means they finally found you."

He looked straight into the camera.

"I don't want revenge."

Richard frowned.

Samuel looked surprised.

William continued.

"If you spend your life chasing revenge..."

"They've already won."

Claire closed her eyes.

Those words sounded exactly like something Richard would say.

No wonder.

Richard had learned them from William.

William smiled again.

"I only want one thing."

"The truth."

"If the truth survives..."

"So do we."

He reached beneath the table.

Pulled out a leather-bound notebook.

"This..."

"...is the only key."

Richard's eyes widened.

"The ledger..."

Samuel whispered.

"It exists."

William nodded into the camera.

"If anyone tells you they're looking for the Ashbourne Archive..."

"They're lying."

Claire frowned.

"What?"

William smiled knowingly.

"There is no Archive."

The room froze.

Daniel blinked.

"What?"

William continued.

"I invented it."

Samuel stared in disbelief.

Richard slowly shook his head.

"No..."

William laughed.

"If my enemies believed there was one collection of evidence..."

"They'd spend decades searching for it."

Claire whispered,

"There wasn't..."

Richard finished the sentence.

"...one archive."

William nodded on the recording.

"I divided everything."

"Financial records."

"Witnesses."

"Videos."

"Bank accounts."

"They're hidden in seventy-three different locations."

Gasps spread across the command center.

William leaned closer.

"No one person can destroy the truth."

Claire finally understood.

For twenty-one years...

Every killer...

Every corrupt politician...

Every intelligence agency...

Had been hunting something that had never existed.

The Ashbourne Archive wasn't a vault.

It was an idea.

A distraction.

A maze.

William smiled proudly.

"If you're watching this..."

"It means they wasted twenty-one years."

Richard couldn't help smiling.

"Still outsmarting them."

Suddenly...

The smile disappeared from William's face.

His eyes became deadly serious.

"There is one person..."

"...who knows where every piece is hidden."

Claire whispered,

"Who?"

William answered.

"You."

Silence.

Claire stared at the screen.

"What?"

William nodded gently.

"When you were two years old..."

"Emily and I turned your bedtime story into a code."

Daniel frowned.

"A bedtime story?"

Richard slowly remembered.

"The Raven..."

Samuel looked at him.

"You remember?"

Richard nodded.

"Emily sang it every night."

Claire frowned.

"I don't."

William smiled.

"You will."

"When the time comes..."

"You'll remember every word."

The screen suddenly flickered.

Static covered the image.

William's voice became distorted.

Then one final sentence came through clearly.

"Never trust..."

The video cut to black.

Power died.

Again.

Darkness swallowed the room.

A loud metallic explosion echoed somewhere below the headquarters.

Olivia shouted from the darkness.

"They've breached the lower level!"

Emergency lights flashed on.

One security monitor automatically rebooted.

The underground garage camera appeared.

Everyone stared.

The black-coated figures had finally moved.

The massive blast door protecting Phoenix Command's underground entrance had been torn open.

And walking calmly through the smoke...

Was a tall man in a charcoal-gray suit.

No weapon.

No body armor.

Only a silver raven pin on his lapel.

He looked directly into the security camera.

Smiled.

Then said six words that froze Richard where he stood.

"Hello again, old friend."

Richard's face turned completely pale.

Claire had never seen him afraid.

Until now.

He whispered only one name.

May you like

"Victor..."
