Chapter 2 - THE FIRST WORD

Vanessa’s screams echoed through the Sterling mansion as the officers escorted her down the marble staircase.

She twisted against the handcuffs and called Arthur’s name again and again.

Arthur never looked back.

His attention remained on Bella.

The little girl stood beside Sarah with both arms wrapped around the nanny’s waist.

Her burned hair rested against Sarah’s apron.

Her face was pale.

Her eyes followed Vanessa until the front doors closed.

Only then did Bella begin to shake.

Sarah knelt and held her carefully.

“You’re safe now.”

Bella looked toward the empty doorway.

Her lips moved.

No sound came out.

Arthur noticed.

He lowered himself beside her, but he did not attempt to touch her.

For two years, every therapist had advised him not to pressure Bella.

Every specialist had told him that grief had taken her voice.

Now Arthur wondered whether grief had ever been the real reason.

“Bella.”

His voice cracked.

“Did Vanessa do this before?”

Bella’s eyes filled with tears.

Her fingers tightened around Sarah’s sleeve.

Sarah felt the child’s breath quicken.

“You don’t have to answer tonight.”

Sarah spoke gently.

“You don’t have to prove anything.”

Bella slowly looked at her father.

Arthur remained completely still.

For the first time, he understood that his daughter was not refusing to speak.

She was afraid to speak.

Bella lifted one trembling hand.

She pointed toward Vanessa’s dressing room.

Then she whispered a single word.

“Drawer.”

Arthur’s face changed.

It was the first word he had heard from his daughter in two years.

Sarah covered her mouth as tears rose in her eyes.

Arthur stared at Bella as if the entire world had stopped.

“What drawer?”

Bella pointed again.

“The black drawer.”

Her voice was weak and rough from disuse.

“She keeps Mommy there.”

Arthur stood so quickly that the chair behind him fell over.

The head of security, Marcus Dean, stepped into the bathroom.

“Sir, the police are searching Miss Vanessa’s handbag.”

Arthur looked toward the adjoining dressing room.

“Search everything.”

Marcus hesitated.

“Everything, sir?”

Arthur’s expression hardened.

“Every drawer.”

“Every cabinet.”

“Every wall.”

“Nothing leaves this house.”

Sarah carried Bella into the bedroom while the security team entered Vanessa’s dressing room.

The room appeared perfect.

Designer gowns were arranged by color.

Shoes lined the walls.

Jewelry glittered beneath glass.

But behind a row of velvet boxes, Marcus found a narrow black drawer secured by a digital lock.

Bella buried her face in Sarah’s shoulder when she saw it.

Arthur approached the drawer.

“What is the code?”

Bella raised seven fingers.

Then she raised three.

Then one.

Arthur entered 731.

The lock clicked.

Inside lay a silver bracelet that had belonged to Bella’s mother.

Beside it was a hospital identification tag.

The name printed across the faded plastic made Arthur stop breathing.

CLAIRE STERLING.

There was also a small flash drive.

A photograph.

And a handwritten note.

Arthur picked up the photograph first.

It showed Vanessa standing beside Claire’s damaged car.

The date printed in the corner was three days before Claire died.
