Chapter 17 - THE FALL OF STERLING

News of the conspiracy spread across the country.

Sterling Heavy Industries lost half its value in two days.

Government contracts were suspended.

Families of the bridge victims filed lawsuits.

Reporters waited outside every Sterling property.

The board removed Malcolm and Thomas.

Arthur voluntarily stepped down as chairman while the investigations continued.

Many advisers begged him to fight.

He refused.

At a live press conference, Arthur stood alone behind a simple podium.

“My company concealed evidence connected to seventeen deaths.”

“My wife discovered the truth.”

“She was killed because of it.”

“I failed to question the people closest to me.”

“I cannot change that failure.”

“But I can stop protecting the institution that caused it.”

He announced that Sterling would release all internal records to investigators.

A large portion of the company’s remaining assets would be placed into a compensation fund.

The families of the victims would control its independent board.

A reporter shouted from the audience.

“Are you admitting personal responsibility?”

Arthur answered without hesitation.

“I am admitting that leadership without accountability is cowardice.”

Sarah watched the broadcast from Margaret’s hospital room.

Her mother’s treatment had resumed safely.

Bella sat beside the window drawing.

This time, her picture showed Claire beneath a bright yellow moon.

When Arthur returned, he looked exhausted.

Bella held up the drawing.

“Mommy’s lamp.”

Arthur smiled for the first time in days.

“It’s beautiful.”

Sarah approached him.

“You did the right thing.”

“I did it years too late.”

“You did it when you finally understood.”

Arthur looked toward Bella.

“That does not erase what she endured.”

“No.”

Sarah’s voice remained firm.

“But guilt is useless unless it changes what you do next.”

Arthur nodded.

“I want to create an independent foundation for children affected by corporate crimes.”

“Not under the Sterling name.”

“Under Claire’s.”

Sarah looked surprised.

“I want you to help build it.”

“I am a nanny.”

“You protected Bella when every powerful adult around her failed.”

“You understand what frightened children need.”

Sarah shook her head.

“That does not make me an executive.”

“No.”

Arthur looked toward her bandaged hand.

“It makes you the person I trust to ensure the foundation does not become another beautiful building that ignores the people inside it.”

Sarah considered his offer.

“I have conditions.”

May you like

Arthur almost smiled.

“I expected nothing less.”
