Chapter 8 - THE BOX BENEATH THE FLOOR

Marcus led them to a storage room beneath the lake house.

Dust covered the shelves.

Old furniture stood beneath white sheets.

He moved a heavy cabinet and lifted a loose floorboard.

Beneath it rested a waterproof metal box.

“I have carried this secret for two years.”

Marcus placed the box on a table.

Arthur’s hands tightened into fists.

“You watched me bury my wife.”

“I watched Bella stop speaking.”

“You said nothing.”

Marcus lowered his eyes.

“I was afraid.”

“So was my daughter.”

Arthur’s voice shook with anger.

“She was five.”

Marcus opened the box.

Inside was Claire’s vehicle computer.

A small recording device.

And an envelope addressed to Arthur.

Arthur opened the envelope.

The letter was written in Marcus’s handwriting.

It explained that Malcolm had ordered him to remove the vehicle computer before investigators arrived.

Malcolm claimed the company would collapse if damaging information became public.

He threatened Marcus’s family.

Marcus obeyed the order but kept the evidence.

“Why write this?”

Reyes asked.

“In case Malcolm killed me too.”

Reyes connected the vehicle computer to a portable reader.

The last hour of Claire’s drive appeared on the screen.

Her brakes had failed twelve minutes after she left the city.

But the system also showed an unauthorized maintenance override entered earlier that afternoon.

The access code belonged to Sterling’s private garage.

Arthur looked at Marcus.

“Who used the garage that day?”

“Malcolm.”

“Vanessa.”

“And me.”

Sarah noticed something inside the box.

A tiny red plastic button.

Bella picked it up before anyone could stop her.

Her expression changed.

“Mommy’s recorder.”

She carried it to Claire’s old desk.

Then she pressed the button.

A distorted conversation filled the room.

Claire’s voice came first.

“You altered the reports.”

Malcolm responded.

“You were supposed to enjoy your charities and stay out of company business.”

Then Vanessa spoke.

“She copied everything.”

Claire’s voice became clearer.

“If Arthur sees those payments, you both go to prison.”

Malcolm laughed.

“Arthur will never see them.”

A door slammed.

Footsteps followed.

Then Claire whispered directly into the recorder.

“Bella, stay hidden.”

The recording ended.

Arthur covered his face with one hand.

Bella stood frozen.

Sarah knelt beside her.

“You heard that conversation.”

Bella nodded.

“Mommy told me to hide in the cabinet.”

“Did anyone see you?”

Bella looked at Marcus.

“Uncle Malcolm.”

Marcus stepped backward.

May you like

Bella’s lower lip trembled.

“He said if I talked, Daddy would have an accident too.”
