Chapter 7 - THE FILE CLAIRE LEFT BEHIND

Arthur moved Sarah, Margaret, and Bella to the Sterling lake house before sunrise.

The property stood behind iron gates and dense pine trees.

Only four members of Arthur’s security team knew the location.

Detective Reyes arrived carrying the flash drive from Vanessa’s drawer.

“It is encrypted.”

Arthur led him into Claire’s old office.

“Claire designed the company’s cybersecurity protocols.”

“She used personal memories as passwords.”

Reyes connected the drive to an isolated computer.

A single question appeared on the screen.

WHAT DID BELLA CALL THE MOON?

Arthur stared at the words.

“I don’t know.”

Sarah looked toward Bella.

The child sat on the floor arranging wooden blocks.

“What did you call the moon when you were little?”

Bella whispered.

“Mommy’s lamp.”

Sarah entered the phrase.

The drive unlocked.

Dozens of folders appeared.

Financial records.

Photographs.

Voice recordings.

Copies of internal emails.

Claire had spent months documenting illegal payments connected to Sterling Heavy Industries.

The files showed that money from the charitable foundation had funded bribes, false safety inspections, and secret political donations.

One folder was labeled M.S.

Arthur opened it.

Inside were bank records bearing Malcolm Sterling’s authorization codes.

Reyes leaned closer.

“This is enough to trigger a federal investigation.”

Arthur shook his head.

“No.”

“These are copies.”

“Malcolm’s lawyers will claim they were fabricated.”

Another file contained a video recorded by Claire.

She appeared tired.

Her hair was tied back.

Bella’s toys were visible behind her.

“If you are watching this, something has happened to me.”

Arthur stopped breathing.

Claire continued.

“Malcolm is not working alone.”

“He has someone inside Arthur’s security team.”

“He knows where we go.”

“He knows when Arthur changes his schedule.”

“He knew I was driving to the lake house.”

Arthur looked toward Marcus, who stood near the door.

Marcus’s face remained unreadable.

Claire named no one.

The recording ended with a warning.

“Do not trust the person who arrives first.”

Reyes paused the video.

“Who arrived first at Claire’s crash?”

Arthur looked at Marcus.

The security chief answered before Arthur could speak.

“I did.”

Sarah felt the temperature in the room change.

Marcus slowly removed his service weapon.

He placed it on the desk.

Then he raised both hands.

“I received the emergency alert from Mrs. Sterling’s car.”

“I reached the scene before the police.”

Arthur’s eyes narrowed.

“Why was that omitted from the official report?”

Marcus looked ashamed.

“Malcolm ordered me to remove the vehicle’s onboard computer.”

Silence followed.

“You destroyed evidence?”

Arthur asked.

Marcus shook his head.

“No.”

“I lied to Malcolm.”

“I hid it.”

Arthur stepped toward him.

“Where?”
