Chapter 4 - WHAT BELLA SAW

Bella refused to return to her bedroom.
Sarah carried her to the small library beside Arthur’s study.
It had once belonged to Claire.
Children’s books filled the lower shelves.
A faded yellow blanket rested on the window seat.
Bella curled beneath it while Sarah sat beside her.
Arthur remained several feet away.
He seemed afraid that moving too close would frighten his daughter back into silence.
Detective Reyes placed the photograph on the table.
“You said ‘garage,’ Bella.”
“Do you remember seeing this woman there?”
Bella looked at Vanessa’s face.
Her body stiffened.
Sarah immediately covered the photograph.
“That’s enough.”
Bella reached out and pulled Sarah’s hand away.
Then she nodded.
“Vanessa was in the garage?”
Arthur asked.
Bella nodded again.
“Was she alone?”
The child stared at the floor.
Her breathing became uneven.
Sarah took her hand.
“You can draw it.”
Bella looked up.
Sarah found a sketchbook and several colored pencils in a cabinet.
Bella selected a black pencil.
She drew a large car.
Beside it, she drew a woman with long hair.
Then she added a tall man.
The man wore a ring.
Bella pressed the pencil into the paper until the tip snapped.
Arthur moved closer.
“What ring?”
Bella reached for another pencil.
She drew a circle with a black stone in the center.
Reyes and Arthur exchanged a look.
Sarah noticed.
“You recognize it.”
Arthur did not answer.
Reyes did.
“Malcolm Sterling wears a ring like that.”
Sarah knew the name.
Malcolm was Arthur’s older half-brother.
He served as vice chairman of Sterling Heavy Industries.
He was also Bella’s godfather.
Arthur stared at the drawing.
“Malcolm wasn’t in the country when Claire died.”
Reyes shook his head.
“That’s what his travel records showed.”
Bella began drawing again.
This time, she drew her mother near the garage door.
Claire was holding something rectangular.
A folder.
Then Bella drew herself behind a cabinet.
“What happened next?”
Sarah asked.
Bella’s eyes filled with tears.
“Uncle Malcolm said Mommy found the wrong papers.”
Arthur’s face drained of color.
Bella’s voice trembled.
“He said bad girls have accidents.”
The room became silent.
Sarah pulled Bella into her arms.
Arthur stepped backward as if someone had struck him.
For years, Malcolm had sat beside him at family dinners.
He had brought Bella birthday gifts.
He had comforted Arthur at Claire’s funeral.
He had promised to help protect the company until Arthur recovered from his grief.
Reyes took the drawing.
“This changes everything.”
Arthur looked at his daughter.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Bella’s eyes closed.
“Vanessa said she would make your car break too.”
Arthur lowered his head.
He could not hide the pain on his face.
Sarah saw the exact moment his guilt became unbearable.
He had believed silence meant his daughter was broken.

The truth was worse.
Bella had remained silent to keep him alive.
