Chapter 20 - THE VERDICT
The trial lasted seven weeks.
Malcolm maintained his innocence until the final day.
His attorneys blamed Thomas.
They blamed Vanessa.
They blamed Marcus.
They even blamed Claire for investigating records she supposedly misunderstood.
The jury rejected every argument.
Malcolm Sterling was found guilty on all major charges.
Thomas was convicted after entering a cooperation agreement.
Several former inspectors and company officials were arrested.
Two political figures resigned.
The bridge cases were reopened.
The families finally received the truth that had been denied to them.
Arthur attended the sentencing alone.
Malcolm looked older.
His expensive suit hung loosely from his shoulders.
“You destroyed our father’s company.”
Malcolm spoke as guards prepared to remove him.
Arthur remained seated.
“No.”
“You destroyed it when you decided people were less valuable than the Sterling name.”
“You think you are better than me?”
“No.”
Arthur looked toward the courtroom doors.
“I think I was becoming like you.”
“That is why I had to stop.”
Malcolm’s expression twisted.
“Claire would still be alive if she had stayed silent.”
Arthur stood.
“Claire lived with courage.”
“You will spend the rest of your life remembering that you could not silence her.”
The guards led Malcolm away.
Outside the courthouse, Arthur found Sarah and Bella waiting beside the car.
Bella held a folded newspaper.
The headline announced the verdict.
“Is it over?”
She asked.
Arthur considered the question.
“The trial is over.”
“The truth does not disappear now.”
Bella looked relieved.
She tore the headline from the newspaper and folded it into a small paper boat.
That evening, they carried the boat to the lake.
Bella placed it on the water.
It floated beneath the yellow reflection of the moon.
“Goodbye, Uncle Malcolm.”
She whispered.
Then she looked toward the sky.
“Goodnight, Mommy.”
Arthur stood behind her.
Sarah remained beside him.
