Chapter 18 - BELLA’S TESTIMONY

Three months later, Bella entered a private courtroom accompanied by Sarah, Arthur, and a child psychologist.
She did not face Malcolm directly.
Her testimony was recorded from another room.
The judge asked simple questions.
Bella answered slowly.
She described hiding inside the garage cabinet.
She remembered Malcolm’s ring.
She remembered Vanessa’s voice.
She remembered her mother saying that the truth mattered more than the company.
The prosecutor showed her the drawing she had made at the lake house.
“Who is this man?”
Bella touched the figure wearing the black ring.
“Uncle Malcolm.”
“Did he say anything to you?”
Bella’s hands began to shake.
Sarah sat nearby but did not speak.
Bella looked toward her father through the glass.
Arthur placed his hand over his heart.
Where does courage live?
Bella understood.
She took a breath.
“He told me Daddy would die if I talked.”
The prosecutor lowered her voice.
“Why are you talking now?”
Bella looked at Sarah.
“Because she heard me when I didn’t have words.”
Sarah struggled to hold back tears.
Malcolm’s attorneys attempted to discredit the child’s memory.
The judge stopped them.
The vehicle computer confirmed the garage access records.
The hidden recording captured Malcolm’s threat against Claire.
The Plant Four files proved motive.
Thomas and Vanessa confirmed the plan.
Malcolm Sterling was charged with murder, conspiracy, evidence tampering, financial fraud, and multiple counts connected to the bridge failures.
Thomas faced similar charges.
Marcus accepted responsibility for obstruction and agreed to testify.
Vanessa pleaded guilty to assaulting Bella, conspiracy, financial crimes, and concealing evidence.
Her cooperation reduced her sentence.
It did not erase it.
Outside the courthouse, reporters surrounded Arthur.
He refused to discuss Bella’s testimony.
“My daughter is not a symbol.”
“She is a child.”
“Leave her in peace.”
Sarah guided Bella into the waiting vehicle.
Inside, Bella leaned back and closed her eyes.
“Was I brave?”
Sarah squeezed her hand.
“You told the truth even though you were afraid.”
“That is what bravery is.”
Bella looked at Arthur.
“Mommy would be proud?”
May you like
Arthur’s voice became unsteady.
“She already was.”
