Chapter 11 – The Man Behind the Curtain

Chapter 11 – The Man Behind the Curtain

The news reached Mariana before sunrise.

Her secure phone rang only once.

She answered immediately.

"Mariana."

Her father's voice was calm.

"The FBI executed the warrants at five-thirty this morning."

She sat upright.

"Did they arrest him?"

"Not yet."

"But they searched his home, his office, and three offshore holding companies."

Mariana frowned.

"What did they find?"

Alejandro was silent for a moment.

"Enough to change everything."

An hour later...

Escalante Global Holdings' executive war room was filled with attorneys, forensic accountants, and federal investigators.

A giant digital screen displayed hundreds of financial transactions.

Lines connected shell companies across New York, Zurich, Singapore, and the Cayman Islands.

Mariana studied the web of transfers.

"It doesn't make sense."

The lead forensic accountant nodded.

"That's exactly why no one noticed."

He zoomed in on a series of payments.

"Every transaction was small."

"Never large enough to trigger an audit."

"But over four years..."

The total appeared on the screen.

$418,700,000

The room fell silent.

Mariana whispered,

"Four hundred eighteen million dollars..."

The accountant nodded.

"Stolen."

"How did Andrew miss this?" she asked.

The accountant clicked to another file.

"He never looked."

"He trusted one person completely."

The screen displayed a photograph.

Daniel Mercer

Chief Financial Officer.

Age: Fifty-six.

Respected by Wall Street.

Trusted by banks.

Admired by the board.

Mariana narrowed her eyes.

She remembered Daniel.

Quiet.

Meticulous.

Always prepared.

He rarely spoke during meetings.

But whenever financial reports were discussed...

Andrew looked to him before anyone else.

"He managed every internal audit," the investigator explained.

"He selected outside accounting firms."

"He controlled financial reporting."

"He essentially audited himself."

Meanwhile...

Daniel Mercer sat calmly inside his penthouse overlooking Central Park.

The morning news played softly on television.

His assistant rushed into the room.

"Sir."

"The FBI searched our Manhattan office."

Daniel calmly stirred his coffee.

"I expected that."

"They froze two overseas accounts."

"I expected that too."

The assistant stared.

"What do we do?"

Daniel smiled.

"Exactly what we've always done."

"We disappear."

He walked into his private study.

Hidden behind a bookshelf was a biometric safe.

Inside were passports.

Cash.

A satellite phone.

And a small black notebook.

He opened it.

Each page contained handwritten notes.

Names.

Dates.

Payments.

Bribes.

Corporate secrets.

Enough information to destroy dozens of powerful people.

Daniel smiled to himself.

"If I fall..."

"They all fall."

Across the city...

Andrew sat inside his attorney's office.

Victor Hayes entered carrying several files.

"You need to see this."

Andrew looked exhausted.

"What now?"

Victor placed the documents on the desk.

"The federal investigation."

Andrew frowned.

"I thought they were investigating me."

"They were."

Victor nodded.

"But then they found Mercer."

Andrew scanned the reports.

His eyes widened.

"Four hundred million?"

Victor nodded.

"Over several years."

Andrew looked up.

"How did I never see this?"

Victor answered honestly.

"Because you stopped asking questions."

The words hit Andrew hard.

He remembered Mariana.

Every quarter she requested detailed financial reviews.

Every quarter she asked difficult questions.

After she left...

No one challenged Daniel Mercer.

Andrew simply signed whatever landed on his desk.

For the first time...

Andrew realized something terrifying.

Mariana hadn't just protected the company from outside threats.

She had been protecting it from people inside.

At noon...

The Board of Directors held another emergency meeting.

Mariana sat at the head of the table.

Federal investigators joined through secure video conference.

The lead agent spoke.

"We've confirmed systematic fraud."

"However..."

He paused.

"We currently have no evidence connecting Mrs. Escalante."

The room remained silent.

"We also have no evidence that Mr. Whitmore knowingly participated."

Several directors exchanged surprised looks.

"So Andrew didn't steal the money?" one asked.

"No."

"He appears..."

The investigator searched for the right word.

"...grossly negligent."

Mariana lowered her eyes.

That sounded exactly like Andrew.

Not evil.

Not calculating.

Simply too proud to notice what was happening around him.

One director leaned forward.

"If he wasn't involved..."

"Will charges be dropped?"

The investigator shook his head.

"Corporate negligence is still a serious matter."

"But our primary target is Mercer."

That afternoon...

Daniel Mercer arrived at Teterboro Airport.

A private jet waited on the runway.

His pilot approached nervously.

"Sir."

"The flight plan has been approved."

Daniel smiled.

"Excellent."

As he climbed the stairs—

Dozens of black SUVs surrounded the aircraft.

FBI agents poured onto the runway.

"Federal agents!"

"Don't move!"

Daniel sighed.

"So..."

"You finally caught up."

He slowly raised his hands.

One agent stepped forward.

"Daniel Mercer."

"You're under arrest for securities fraud, money laundering, wire fraud, conspiracy, and obstruction of justice."

Daniel smiled strangely.

"You think this ends with me?"

The lead agent frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Daniel laughed.

A cold...

Confident laugh.

"You have absolutely no idea whose money you've been chasing."

Back at Escalante Tower...

Mariana received the news of Daniel's arrest.

Her assistant smiled.

"We got him."

Mariana didn't.

"No."

"We caught one man."

She looked toward the evidence board.

"There are still too many missing pieces."

That evening...

Andrew stood alone outside the courthouse.

Reporters shouted questions from every direction.

"Mr. Whitmore!"

"Did Mercer betray you?"

"Did you know about the fraud?"

"Are you cooperating with investigators?"

He ignored them all.

His driver opened the car door.

Andrew didn't get in.

Instead...

He looked across the street.

Mariana was exiting another building after meeting with federal prosecutors.

For a brief moment...

Their eyes met.

Neither smiled.

Neither waved.

But something had changed.

For the first time since their separation...

She no longer looked at him as the enemy.

She looked at him as a man who had made terrible choices...

And who had also been deceived.

Andrew started walking toward her.

Before he could cross the street—

A black motorcycle sped between them.

The rider threw a sealed envelope onto the sidewalk directly at Mariana's feet.

Then disappeared into traffic.

Security rushed forward.

One bodyguard carefully opened the envelope.

Inside was a single photograph.

Daniel Mercer...

Standing beside an older man whose face had been deliberately scratched out.

On the back were seven handwritten words:

"Mercer never worked for Whitmore alone."

Mariana felt a chill run down her spine.

Someone else had been pulling the strings.

Someone powerful enough to remain completely invisible.

She looked up toward the crowded street.

The motorcycle was gone.

The game they thought was ending...

May you like

Had only just begun.
