Chapter 19 – The Truth Buried for Thirty-Two Years

Chapter 19 – The Truth Buried for Thirty-Two Years

No one spoke during the flight back to Geneva.

The letter from Jonathan Blackwood lay on the table between them.

Every sentence carried the same message.

He wasn't running anymore.

He was inviting them to finish what had begun three decades earlier.

Mariana looked at her father.

"You said Blackwood was your business partner."

Alejandro stared out the window.

"I was hoping I would never have to tell you this story."

Rebecca folded her arms.

"You don't have that luxury anymore."

Alejandro nodded slowly.

"I know."

Back inside the secure command center...

The room was cleared.

Only Mariana.

Alejandro.

Andrew.

Rebecca.

And two federal prosecutors remained.

Alejandro placed an old leather briefcase on the table.

Its edges were cracked with age.

The brass lock was tarnished.

He entered a six-digit combination.

The lock clicked open.

Inside rested a single blue folder.

Across the cover, faded gold letters read:

NEW WORLD DEVELOPMENT

Mariana stared at it.

"So it really exists."

Her father nodded.

"Yes."

He took a long breath.

"Thirty-two years ago..."

"I wasn't the chairman of Escalante Global."

"I was a young engineer with a dream."

He smiled faintly.

"So was Jonathan Blackwood."

Andrew looked surprised.

"He wasn't a financier?"

"No."

"He was brilliant."

"The smartest businessman I'd ever met."

Rebecca frowned.

"So what happened?"

Alejandro opened the folder.

Inside were handwritten contracts.

Original engineering drawings.

Photographs of two young men standing beside a construction site.

One was unmistakably Alejandro.

The other...

A much younger Jonathan Blackwood.

Both were smiling.

Both looked like brothers.

"We founded New World Development together."

Alejandro's voice softened.

"We wanted to build affordable housing."

"Not luxury towers."

"Not billion-dollar corporations."

"We wanted ordinary families to own homes."

Mariana listened quietly.

It sounded nothing like the ruthless Blackwood she knew.

"What changed?"

Alejandro closed the folder.

"Greed."

He continued.

"An international investment group approached Jonathan."

"They offered us more money than we'd ever imagined."

"But there was a condition."

Rebecca leaned forward.

"What condition?"

"They wanted us to force hundreds of families off their land."

Silence filled the room.

"I refused."

"What about Blackwood?"

Alejandro's expression grew heavier.

"He accepted."

Andrew frowned.

"So you ended the partnership."

Alejandro nodded.

"I bought his shares."

"I thought that was the end."

Rebecca shook her head.

"It wasn't enough."

Alejandro whispered,

"No."

"He believed I stole his future."

Mariana looked through the old documents.

Then she noticed something strange.

One contract had never been signed.

"Father..."

She held it up.

"Why is this blank?"

Alejandro looked at it.

His face turned pale.

"It shouldn't be here."

"What is it?"

"The original partnership agreement."

Rebecca examined the document.

"There's a missing page."

Alejandro nodded.

"The most important page."

"What was on it?"

He answered quietly.

"A succession clause."

The room fell silent.

"What kind of succession clause?" Rebecca asked.

Alejandro hesitated.

Then spoke.

"If either partner died..."

"The surviving partner would inherit everything."

Andrew frowned.

"So?"

Alejandro looked directly at Mariana.

"We never removed that clause."

Everyone froze.

Rebecca blinked.

"You're saying..."

"If the original agreement was still legally valid..."

Alejandro nodded.

"Then Jonathan Blackwood believes..."

"...he has a legal claim to part of the Escalante empire."

Mariana slowly shook her head.

"After thirty-two years?"

"It sounds impossible."

Rebecca replied,

"It probably is."

"But if someone believed it..."

"They might spend decades trying to recover what they thought was theirs."

Just then...

One of the Swiss forensic specialists hurried into the room.

"We finished examining the letter Blackwood left."

Rebecca looked up.

"Anything?"

The specialist nodded.

"There was invisible ink."

He placed the letter under ultraviolet light.

A second message appeared beneath the first.

Coordinates.

A date.

A time.

And one sentence.

Come alone, or Gabriel dies.

The meeting location was an abandoned hydroelectric station on the French-Swiss border.

Twenty-four hours away.

Andrew immediately spoke.

"You're not going alone."

Mariana looked at him.

"I don't intend to."

Rebecca nodded.

"We'll surround the area."

"But if Blackwood sees us..."

Mariana finished the sentence.

"He'll kill Gabriel."

Late that evening...

Andrew stood alone outside the command center.

Snow drifted quietly around him.

Mariana stepped onto the balcony.

Neither spoke for a while.

Finally Andrew said,

"I owe your brother an apology."

Mariana looked at him.

"For what?"

"He saw through me."

She didn't answer.

"He warned you."

"I became exactly the man he feared."

Mariana sighed.

"You weren't always that man."

Andrew smiled sadly.

"Maybe."

"But I became him."

She looked toward the mountains in the distance.

"If we bring Gabriel home..."

"My family can finally heal."

Andrew nodded.

"And if we don't?"

Mariana didn't answer.

Because she couldn't.

At that same moment...

Inside an isolated stone fortress overlooking the Alps...

Gabriel sat tied to a wooden chair.

A fireplace crackled nearby.

Jonathan Blackwood entered carrying the blue folder.

The original New World Development file.

Gabriel frowned.

"How did you get that?"

Blackwood smiled.

"I've had a copy for years."

He opened the folder.

Then removed something hidden beneath the false bottom.

A yellowed envelope.

Older than every other document.

Its wax seal remained unbroken.

Gabriel's eyes widened.

"You found it..."

Blackwood nodded.

"The missing page."

He carefully broke the seal.

Slowly unfolded the paper.

Then read the first line.

His confident expression vanished.

He read it again.

Then a third time.

His hands began to tremble.

Gabriel stared at him.

"What is it?"

Blackwood looked up in disbelief.

His voice was barely a whisper.

"I've been wrong..."

"For thirty-two years."

Before Gabriel could respond—

The heavy steel door burst open.

One of Blackwood's men rushed inside.

"Sir!"

"We have a problem."

Blackwood folded the document.

"What happened?"

The guard answered breathlessly.

"The FBI has found us."

Blackwood looked toward the window.

In the valley below...

Helicopters were already approaching through the snow.

The final confrontation had begun.
