Chapter 12 – The Invisible Partner

Chapter 12 – The Invisible Partner
The photograph lay on the conference table at Escalante Tower.
No one touched it.
Daniel Mercer stood beside an older man whose face had been scratched away with a blade.
The damage wasn't random.
Whoever had destroyed the face wanted the identity hidden—not forgotten.
Mariana studied every detail.
The suit.
The watch.
The cuff links.
The background.
Then she looked at her chief investigator.
"Authenticate it."
Twenty minutes later, he returned.
"It's real."
"No signs of digital manipulation."
"So someone intentionally removed the man's face."
Mariana nodded slowly.
"They weren't hiding Mercer."
"They were hiding him."
Meanwhile...
Inside FBI headquarters, Daniel Mercer sat in an interrogation room.
His wrists were cuffed to the table.
Across from him sat Special Agent Rebecca Collins.
She opened the first folder.
"Daniel Mercer."
"We've recovered over four hundred million dollars in fraudulent transactions."
Daniel smiled.
"You've recovered a fraction."
Rebecca didn't react.
"You'll spend the rest of your life in prison."
Daniel leaned back.
"Only if I survive long enough."
The room fell silent.
"What does that mean?"
He smiled again.
"The people above me don't leave loose ends."
Across town...
Andrew was summoned to federal headquarters.
Victor Hayes walked beside him.
"Tell the truth."
"I intend to."
"No guessing."
"No assumptions."
"Just facts."
Andrew nodded.
For the first time in years...
He wasn't trying to protect his reputation.
He was trying to understand what had happened.
Inside the interview room...
Agent Collins placed a financial chart in front of him.
"Mr. Whitmore."
"When was the last time you personally reviewed your company's cash flow?"
Andrew hesitated.
"I..."
He searched his memory.
"Three years ago."
The agent raised an eyebrow.
"You were CEO."
"I trusted my executives."
She nodded.
"Specifically Daniel Mercer."
"Yes."
She slid another document across the table.
"This authorization bears your signature."
Andrew frowned.
"I don't remember signing it."
"You did."
"The handwriting analysis confirms it."
He looked closer.
It was his signature.
But the document itself...
Had clearly been altered.
The first page approved a routine financial transfer.
The attached pages authorized something entirely different.
Andrew looked up.
"This wasn't what I signed."
Agent Collins quietly replied,
"We believe you."
At Escalante Tower...
Mariana met with Michael Carter.
The billionaire entrepreneur she had once rescued now sat across from her.
He placed an old newspaper clipping on her desk.
"I think you'll want to see this."
The article was nearly fifteen years old.
A small business section.
Nothing remarkable.
Except one photograph.
Young Mariana.
Young Andrew.
And...
A third man.
Mariana leaned closer.
Her breathing slowed.
"Daniel Mercer."
Michael nodded.
"He wasn't introduced as a CFO."
"He was introduced as an investment adviser."
Mariana frowned.
"Andrew told me they'd only met after the company expanded."
Michael shook his head.
"They knew each other long before that."
That evening...
Andrew searched through old storage boxes in the mansion attic.
Dust covered everything.
Old awards.
College books.
Photographs.
Then...
A cardboard box labeled:
2009
He opened it.
Inside were dozens of photographs from the earliest days of Whitmore Holdings.
There he was.
Young.
Determined.
Standing beside his first tiny office.
And beside him...
Daniel Mercer.
Smiling.
Andrew frowned.
"I don't remember this."
He turned another photo over.
On the back was handwritten text.
First Investor Meeting
Daniel had been there from the beginning.
Why had he forgotten?
As Andrew searched deeper...
He found an old leather planner.
His own handwriting filled the pages.
One entry caught his attention.
Meeting canceled.
Daniel said the investors preferred speaking with him alone.
Another.
Daniel suggested I stop attending financial negotiations and focus on public relations.
Another.
Mariana questioned Daniel's numbers today.
Need to talk to her later.
Andrew closed the planner.
His hands trembled.
Daniel hadn't merely managed finances.
He had slowly isolated Andrew from every important decision.
Across the city...
Brenda packed expensive dresses into cardboard boxes.
Most would be returned.
The rest had already been seized.
Her apartment no longer looked luxurious.
It looked temporary.
Her phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
She hesitated before answering.
"Hello?"
A man's voice replied.
"If you want to save yourself..."
"You need to leave New York tonight."
Brenda's heart skipped a beat.
"Who is this?"
"You've seen things."
"You know names."
"They won't let you testify."
The line went dead.
Brenda stared at the phone.
A second later...
Someone knocked on her apartment door.
Not politely.
Three slow, deliberate knocks.
She backed away.
"Who is it?"
No answer.
The knocking stopped.
She waited.
Five seconds.
Ten.
Then she looked through the peephole.
The hallway was empty.
Only a small envelope lay on the floor.
She carefully opened the door and picked it up.
Inside was a single photograph.
It showed her leaving a hotel with Andrew six months earlier.
Across the bottom, written in black ink:
"Silence keeps people alive."
Brenda's hands began to shake uncontrollably.
Someone had been watching her.
For months.
The next morning...
Mariana was preparing for another meeting when her chief investigator entered without knocking.
His expression was unusually serious.
"What happened?"
"We identified the hotel in the anonymous photograph."
"And?"
"It wasn't just any hotel."
He enlarged the background.
A logo appeared on the building.
Mariana recognized it immediately.
"The Grand Lexington."
He nodded.
"Daniel Mercer owned a private suite there."
Mariana frowned.
"So?"
The investigator clicked to the next image.
Hotel security records.
Guest logs.
Financial statements.
Then...
A list of visitors.
One name made the room fall silent.
Margaret Whitmore.
Mariana slowly looked up.
"She met Mercer?"
"Repeatedly."
"For nearly three years."
The room fell into stunned silence.
Mariana's pulse quickened.
Had Margaret simply hated her...
Or had she been working with Mercer all along?
Before anyone could speak, Mariana's secure phone rang.
It was Agent Collins.
Her voice was urgent.
"Mrs. Escalante."
"We have a problem."
"What happened?"
"Daniel Mercer has agreed to testify."
Mariana exhaled slowly.
"That's good news."
"No."
Agent Collins's voice grew grim.
"He says..."
May you like
"...Margaret Whitmore is only the beginning."
