Chapter 3 – The Woman Behind the Empire

Chapter 3 – The Woman Behind the Empire

Andrew didn't sleep.

He spent the entire night in his study, surrounded by contracts, financial statements, and old business records.

For the first time in four years, he wasn't looking for profits.

He was looking for the truth.

The tablet Brenda had handed him remained on his desk.

The screen displayed the same photograph.

Mariana Escalante.

Former Vice Chairwoman of Escalante Global Holdings.

Chief Architect of Global Strategic Expansion.

The woman smiling in the picture looked familiar...

Yet somehow, she wasn't the woman he thought he had married.

Andrew whispered to himself.

"No..."

"This has to be fake."

He immediately called his private investigator.

"I need everything you have on Mariana."

The investigator hesitated.

"Sir... I've already started."

"And?"

Another pause.

"What I found... doesn't make sense."

By sunrise, the investigator arrived at Whitmore Mansion carrying a thick leather folder.

Andrew snatched it from his hands.

"Tell me."

The investigator took a deep breath.

"Mrs. Mariana Escalante graduated from Harvard Business School at twenty-four."

Andrew froze.

"What?"

"She speaks five languages."

"She negotiated international energy agreements before she turned thirty."

Andrew frowned.

"No..."

"That's impossible."

"I've never heard her mention any of this."

The investigator nodded.

"Because she deliberately erased it."

He opened another page.

"Four years ago, she resigned from every executive position in the Escalante Group."

"The same week she married you."

Andrew slowly looked up.

"She gave up everything..."

"Yes."

The investigator continued.

"She sold none of her shares."

"She simply stepped away."

Andrew remembered their honeymoon.

Mariana had turned off her phone for nearly two weeks.

He had joked that no one from work seemed to miss her.

She had only smiled.

"I've trained them well."

At the time...

He thought she had been talking about a small consulting business.

Now those words echoed differently.

The investigator placed another document on the table.

"This is where things become... interesting."

Andrew picked it up.

It was a list of corporate transactions.

Every major expansion Whitmore Holdings had made over the last four years.

Every single one.

Beside each transaction appeared the same initials.

M.E.

"What does this mean?"

The investigator answered quietly.

"The negotiations were conducted through anonymous legal representatives."

"The signatures belong to Mariana Escalante."

Andrew stared at the pages.

"No..."

"She told me she was only reviewing paperwork."

The investigator lowered his eyes.

"Sir..."

"I don't think she was reviewing it."

"I think..."

"...she built it."

Across the city...

Escalante Global Holdings welcomed international media for an unexpected press conference.

Reporters crowded into the lobby.

Camera flashes lit the room.

Rumors had spread overnight.

Was the mysterious woman behind Whitmore's collapse finally going to appear?

Inside a private conference room, Mariana adjusted the sleeve of her navy-blue blazer.

Her assistant approached.

"The media is waiting."

She nodded.

"What about Father?"

"He's already inside."

Mariana walked toward the stage.

The moment she entered, every reporter stood.

Hundreds of cameras focused on her.

Whispers filled the room.

"That's her."

"So it's true."

"She's Mariana Escalante."

Alejandro stepped to the podium.

"Ladies and gentlemen..."

"For years, my daughter chose privacy."

"Today..."

"She has chosen transparency."

He stepped aside.

Mariana faced the microphones.

Her expression remained calm.

"I know many of you have questions."

"I will answer only one."

The room became silent.

A reporter raised her hand.

"Mrs. Escalante..."

"Did you intentionally destroy Whitmore Holdings?"

Mariana met her eyes.

"No."

She paused.

"I simply stopped holding it together."

The room erupted with murmurs.

Another reporter shouted,

"Did your husband know your true identity?"

"No."

"Why not?"

"Because he never asked."

Another voice came from the back.

"Will you return to Whitmore Holdings?"

Mariana smiled politely.

"I don't return to places where respect no longer exists."

The statement spread across social media within minutes.

Millions watched the clip.

Thousands commented.

Many sympathized with her.

Others criticized Andrew.

Public opinion shifted faster than the stock market.

Inside Whitmore Headquarters...

Every television displayed Mariana's press conference.

No one noticed Andrew standing in the doorway.

Employees watched in complete silence.

One young analyst whispered,

"She negotiated the Crescent Energy merger."

"I heard she saved the company twice."

Another replied,

"I heard it was more than twice."

Andrew felt something tighten inside his chest.

He walked into his office.

Opened an old cabinet.

Inside were dozens of framed awards.

CEO of the Year.

Business Visionary Award.

Outstanding Leadership Recognition.

He stared at them.

Then remembered something.

Every time he had accepted an award...

Mariana had refused to stand on stage beside him.

She always said,

"This company only needs one face."

He had believed she was being supportive.

Now he realized...

She had been protecting his pride.

That afternoon...

Andrew received another devastating blow.

The Board of Directors requested an emergency vote.

Every executive gathered around the long oak conference table.

The chairman spoke first.

"Mr. Whitmore..."

"Our shareholders have lost confidence."

Andrew stood immediately.

"I can fix this."

"Give me time."

A board member interrupted.

"Time is exactly what we no longer have."

Another director slid a document toward him.

"We've reviewed every major success this company achieved."

"Each one traces back to Mariana Escalante."

Andrew slammed the folder shut.

"So what?"

"I was still the CEO!"

The room remained quiet.

Finally...

An elderly director who had served since the company's founding spoke.

"No."

"You were the face."

The words struck harder than any slap.

Meanwhile...

Brenda sat alone in her luxury apartment.

Designer handbags covered the shelves.

Jewelry sparkled under soft lighting.

Only yesterday...

She had admired them.

Today...

They looked meaningless.

Her phone buzzed.

It was Andrew.

"Come to the mansion."

She answered carefully.

"Is everything okay?"

"No."

His voice sounded exhausted.

"Nothing is okay."

When Brenda arrived, she found Andrew standing in front of the fireplace.

His tie was gone.

His shirt sleeves were rolled up.

Dark circles surrounded his eyes.

He looked ten years older.

He handed her a folder.

"Read."

She flipped through the pages.

Every page revealed another truth.

Mariana's negotiations.

Mariana's guarantees.

Mariana's investments.

Mariana's signatures.

Brenda slowly closed the file.

"So..."

"It was really her."

Andrew nodded once.

"I built nothing."

The words barely escaped his lips.

Before Brenda could answer—

The mansion's butler entered nervously.

"Sir..."

Andrew looked up.

"What now?"

"Federal officers are here."

"They've brought a warrant."

"They wish to inspect all financial records connected to Escalante-backed transactions."

Margaret rushed into the room.

"What?"

"This is our home!"

The butler swallowed.

"They said..."

"...it's no longer entirely yours."

Andrew's face turned white.

Outside...

Black government vehicles lined the driveway.

Agents stepped out one by one.

Their leader adjusted his jacket before walking toward the front door.

As the doorbell echoed through the mansion, Andrew suddenly remembered Mariana's final smile.

It hadn't been the smile of a defeated wife.

May you like

It had been the smile of someone who already knew how the story would end.

End of Chapter 3
