Chapter 14 – The Arrest No One Expected

Chapter 14 – The Arrest No One Expected
The flashing red and blue lights painted the marble walls of Whitmore Mansion in harsh, cold colors.
Margaret stared through the window.
Her hands trembled.
"They're here for me..."
Andrew looked toward the front door but said nothing.
For the first time in his life, he didn't know whether he wanted to protect his mother—or hear the truth.
The doorbell rang once.
Then came three firm knocks.
Andrew walked to the entrance and opened the door.
Special Agent Rebecca Collins stood outside with six federal agents.
Her expression was unreadable.
"Mr. Whitmore."
Andrew nodded.
"You have a warrant."
"I do."
She stepped inside.
Margaret slowly stood from the sofa.
"I'd like to speak to my attorney."
Rebecca looked at her.
"You'll have that opportunity."
Margaret's breathing quickened.
"So... you're arresting me?"
Rebecca glanced down at the document in her hand.
"No."
She looked past Margaret and fixed her eyes on someone standing at the end of the hallway.
"Daniel Mercer wasn't the only executive hiding secrets."
The room fell silent.
Then Rebecca spoke a name that stunned everyone.
"Thomas Bennett."
The Whitmore family's longtime corporate attorney.
Thomas stepped out of Andrew's study.
He had been there for nearly an hour, reviewing documents with Margaret before the agents arrived.
He forced a polite smile.
"There must be some misunderstanding."
Rebecca calmly handed him the warrant.
"Thomas Bennett."
"You're under arrest for conspiracy, destruction of evidence, obstruction of justice, and aiding financial fraud."
Thomas's smile disappeared.
"My client—"
"You can contact your client after processing."
Two agents stepped forward.
Thomas instinctively backed away.
"You don't understand."
Rebecca replied,
"Oh, we understand perfectly."
Andrew stared in disbelief.
"Thomas?"
The attorney slowly turned toward him.
His confident mask finally cracked.
"I can explain."
Andrew's voice rose.
"You've represented my family for twenty years."
Thomas lowered his eyes.
"I know."
"You knew Mercer was stealing?"
Silence.
Andrew took another step forward.
"You knew?"
Thomas whispered,
"...Yes."
Margaret gasped.
"You promised me..."
Thomas interrupted sharply.
"I promised to protect the family."
Rebecca folded her arms.
"No."
"You protected yourself."
The agents handcuffed Thomas.
As they escorted him toward the door, he suddenly stopped.
He looked directly at Andrew.
"You think Mercer was the mastermind?"
Andrew frowned.
"What are you talking about?"
Thomas laughed bitterly.
"Mercer was an accountant."
"He moved money."
"I handled paperwork."
"But neither of us created the plan."
Rebecca's expression hardened.
"Enough."
Thomas ignored her.
He fixed his eyes on Andrew.
"You still haven't figured out who wanted your company from the very beginning."
Before anyone could ask another question, the agents led him outside.
The front door closed.
Silence filled the mansion.
Across town...
Mariana received a call from Rebecca Collins.
"The arrest is complete."
Mariana nodded.
"Thomas Bennett."
"I expected that eventually."
Rebecca hesitated.
"There was something else."
"What?"
"He claims there's another person."
Mariana frowned.
"Mercer said the same thing."
Rebecca's voice became quieter.
"We're beginning to think they're telling the truth."
At FBI headquarters...
Thomas Bennett was placed in an interrogation room only two doors away from Daniel Mercer.
For three hours...
Neither man spoke.
Then something unexpected happened.
Thomas requested to make a statement.
Rebecca entered with two prosecutors.
Thomas looked exhausted.
"I'll cooperate."
Rebecca remained cautious.
"In exchange for what?"
"Witness protection."
She didn't answer.
Thomas continued.
"If I tell you the truth..."
"I won't live long enough to testify."
He slid a folded piece of paper across the table.
Rebecca opened it.
Inside was a list of twelve companies.
None of them belonged to Whitmore Holdings.
She looked confused.
"What am I looking at?"
Thomas replied quietly.
"Every one of those companies secretly purchased Whitmore stock over the last six years."
Rebecca's eyes narrowed.
"Who owns them?"
Thomas smiled sadly.
"That's the problem."
"Officially..."
"No one."
Meanwhile...
Andrew drove alone through Manhattan.
He had nowhere to go.
The mansion no longer felt like home.
His office belonged to someone else.
Even the city seemed unfamiliar.
Without thinking, he found himself outside a small diner.
The same diner where he and Mariana had shared breakfast years ago.
The owner recognized him immediately.
"Mr. Whitmore."
Andrew smiled weakly.
"I haven't been here in a long time."
The elderly owner nodded.
"No."
"But your wife came every month."
Andrew froze.
"What?"
"She always ordered tomato soup."
"And she'd sit by the window."
Andrew looked toward the empty booth.
"Alone?"
The owner smiled gently.
"No."
"She always said she was waiting for someone."
Andrew swallowed.
"Did I ever come?"
The old man looked at him with quiet sympathy.
"You never did."
Across the city...
Mariana stood in her office staring at the skyline.
Michael Carter entered carrying another file.
"We traced the shell companies."
"And?"
"They all connect to the same investment fund."
Mariana took the folder.
The name printed across the top made her pause.
Blackridge Capital Partners
She frowned.
"I've heard of them."
Michael nodded.
"They're one of the most aggressive acquisition firms in the country."
"They've attempted hostile takeovers for decades."
Mariana looked up.
"You think they targeted Whitmore Holdings?"
Michael answered carefully.
"I think..."
"They targeted you."
The words hung heavily in the air.
Mariana slowly shook her head.
"Why me?"
Michael opened another document.
"Because your father refused to sell Escalante Global ten years ago."
Another file followed.
Then another.
A timeline began forming.
Mercer joined Whitmore Holdings.
Thomas became increasingly influential.
Anonymous shell companies quietly accumulated shares.
Margaret was manipulated.
Andrew was isolated.
Brenda appeared.
Every event...
Every coincidence...
Suddenly looked planned.
Late that night...
Rebecca Collins called Mariana again.
"We recovered Thomas Bennett's encrypted hard drive."
"Anything useful?"
Rebecca took a slow breath.
"More than useful."
"There was one video."
"What kind of video?"
"It was recorded seven years ago."
"Who's in it?"
Rebecca answered quietly.
"Daniel Mercer."
"Thomas Bennett."
"And..."
She paused.
"...the CEO of Blackridge Capital."
Mariana's heart skipped a beat.
"What are they discussing?"
Rebecca's voice turned grave.
"They're discussing how to separate you from Andrew..."
"...before either of you realize who the real enemy is."
Mariana slowly lowered the phone.
Outside her office window, Manhattan glittered beneath the night sky.
She had believed this story was about betrayal inside a marriage.
Then she believed it was about greed inside a corporation.
Now...
She understood the truth.
Someone had spent years orchestrating every move.
Not to destroy Andrew.
Not even to destroy Whitmore Holdings.
But to weaken the Escalante family from within.
And whoever sat at the top of Blackridge Capital...
May you like
Had just become the most dangerous person she had ever faced.
