Chapter 15 – The Mastermind Revealed

Chapter 15 – The Mastermind Revealed
Rain poured over Manhattan before dawn.
The city looked gray, almost lifeless.
Inside Escalante Tower, however, every floor was awake.
Lawyers.
Cybersecurity experts.
Federal agents.
Forensic accountants.
No one had gone home.
On the largest screen in the executive war room, the logo of Blackridge Capital Partners glowed in the darkness.
Mariana stood at the head of the table.
"Play the recording."
The lights dimmed.
The recovered video began.
The footage was seven years old.
A private conference room.
Three men sat around a polished oak table.
Daniel Mercer.
Thomas Bennett.
And a silver-haired executive whose face was now perfectly clear.
The room fell silent.
Michael Carter whispered,
"...I know him."
Mariana looked over.
"Who is he?"
Michael swallowed.
"Jonathan Blackwood."
The founder and CEO of Blackridge Capital.
One of the most feared corporate raiders in the world.
The video continued.
Blackwood leaned back in his chair, smiling.
"Escalante Global cannot be purchased."
Mercer nodded.
"They've rejected every offer."
Blackwood folded his hands.
"Then we don't attack Escalante."
Thomas frowned.
"What do you mean?"
Blackwood smiled.
"We attack the people protecting it."
He slid a photograph across the table.
The camera zoomed in.
Young Mariana.
Standing beside Andrew.
The date in the corner made Mariana's heart stop.
It had been taken before her wedding.
Blackwood spoke calmly.
"Mariana Escalante is the future of that family."
"If she remains focused..."
"We'll never get near Escalante Global."
Mercer nodded.
"So?"
Blackwood's smile widened.
"Then make sure she spends the next several years saving someone else."
The recording ended.
No one in the room spoke.
Michael finally broke the silence.
"He planned your marriage..."
Mariana slowly shook her head.
"No."
"He didn't create our love."
She stared at the frozen image of Blackwood.
"But once he discovered it..."
"He turned it into a weapon."
Rebecca Collins entered the room carrying another folder.
"It gets worse."
She placed several documents on the table.
"Blackridge secretly financed three of Mercer’s shell companies."
"And they paid Thomas Bennett over twenty million dollars in consulting fees."
Michael frowned.
"What about Margaret?"
Rebecca sighed.
"She wasn't paid."
"She was manipulated."
Mariana looked up.
"How?"
Rebecca opened another file.
"They convinced her that if Andrew discovered your real identity..."
"He'd become nothing more than 'Mr. Escalante.'"
Mariana closed her eyes.
Margaret's greatest weakness had never been greed.
It had been fear.
Fear of losing control over her son.
Blackwood had simply used it.
Across the city...
Andrew sat alone in the small diner where he and Mariana had once spent countless mornings together.
The owner quietly placed a bowl of tomato soup in front of him.
"I didn't order this."
The old man smiled.
"I know."
"She always said this was your favorite."
Andrew stared at the soup.
Steam rose gently into the air.
For years...
He had believed it simply appeared on the table.
He had never wondered who remembered.
Who cared.
Who noticed.
His phone rang.
It was Rebecca Collins.
"Mr. Whitmore."
"We need you at Escalante Tower."
Andrew frowned.
"Why?"
"You deserve to hear this in person."
One hour later...
Andrew entered the executive war room.
Several federal agents glanced toward him.
No one stopped him.
Mariana stood beside the large screen.
Their eyes met briefly.
Neither smiled.
Rebecca spoke first.
"Mr. Whitmore."
"We've identified the individual who orchestrated the conspiracy."
She pressed a button.
Blackwood's face filled the screen.
Andrew frowned.
"I've never met him."
Mariana answered quietly.
"No."
"You met the people he sent."
Rebecca played the recording.
Andrew watched every second.
His breathing slowed.
Then stopped.
When Blackwood said,
"Make sure she spends the next several years saving someone else,"
Andrew closed his eyes.
Everything suddenly made sense.
Mercer encouraging him to expand too quickly.
Thomas handling every legal document.
Margaret becoming increasingly hostile toward Mariana.
Brenda entering his life at exactly the right moment.
None of it had been random.
He whispered,
"My God..."
Rebecca turned toward him.
"Mr. Whitmore."
"We believe you were manipulated."
Andrew laughed bitterly.
"I was."
"But manipulation only works..."
He looked at Mariana.
"...when pride opens the door."
No one argued.
Because he was right.
Blackwood had exploited Andrew's arrogance.
But Andrew had chosen it.
Mariana walked to the window overlooking Manhattan.
"What's Blackwood doing now?"
Rebecca answered immediately.
"He disappeared twelve hours ago."
"Private jet?"
"No."
"No immigration record."
"No credit card activity."
"No phone."
Michael folded his arms.
"He knew we were coming."
Rebecca nodded.
"He vanished before the warrants were signed."
Just then, the cybersecurity director rushed into the room.
"Chairwoman."
"We have a situation."
"What happened?"
"Our servers detected an unauthorized access attempt."
"From where?"
The director's face tightened.
"Inside the building."
Every person in the room became still.
Rebecca immediately signaled her agents.
"Lock down every floor."
Within seconds, alarms echoed throughout Escalante Tower.
Security doors slammed shut.
Elevators froze.
Employees looked around in confusion.
On the thirty-ninth floor...
A man wearing a maintenance uniform calmly closed his laptop.
He removed the fake identification badge from his jacket.
Then smiled.
His earpiece crackled.
A calm voice spoke.
"Did you get it?"
The man replied,
"Yes."
"I've copied every merger file."
The voice answered,
"Good."
"Leave."
The man turned—
Only to find three armed FBI agents blocking the hallway.
"Federal agents!"
"Hands where we can see them!"
The man didn't move.
Instead...
He smiled.
Then reached into his pocket.
Rebecca shouted through her radio,
"Stop him!"
But it was too late.
He crushed a small device in his hand.
The building lights flickered.
Every computer screen inside Escalante Tower went black.
The emergency generators roared to life.
When power returned fifteen seconds later...
The man was gone.
Only his fake maintenance badge remained on the floor.
Rebecca picked it up.
No fingerprints.
No DNA.
Professional.
Very professional.
Back in the war room...
The cybersecurity team assessed the damage.
"The theft was incomplete."
Mariana frowned.
"What did they take?"
The technician looked pale.
"They accessed the confidential acquisition files."
Michael frowned.
"Anything else?"
The technician hesitated.
"One personnel file."
"Whose?"
The room became silent.
He swallowed.
"Yours, Chairwoman."
Mariana stared at him.
"My personnel file?"
He nodded.
"Everything."
"Your passport."
"Travel history."
"Medical records."
"Family contacts."
"Private security schedules."
Rebecca's expression hardened instantly.
"This isn't corporate espionage anymore."
She looked directly at Mariana.
"This is personal."
Mariana slowly turned toward the rain-soaked skyline.
Somewhere out there...
Jonathan Blackwood was still watching.
Still planning.
Still one step ahead.
She had won back her company.
She had exposed the conspiracy.
She had reclaimed her name.
But the real war...
May you like
Had only just begun.
