Chapter 11 - VANESSA’S LAST MOVE

Vanessa left the mansion at ten fourteen that morning.
She carried two suitcases.
Security photographed every item before allowing it through the gate.
Daniel assumed she was finished.
He was wrong.
At eleven twenty-seven, the Ashford Development board received an anonymous email.
Attached were photographs of Emily searching through an office drawer.
Another photograph showed her holding confidential company documents.
A third showed her entering Daniel’s study late at night.
The email accused Emily of industrial theft.
Within minutes, three board members called Daniel.
Vanessa had prepared another layer.
Daniel summoned Emily.
She looked at the photographs.
Then she almost laughed.
“What?”
Daniel asked.
“These are from the night the pipe burst.”
Daniel remembered.
A pipe had leaked behind the study wall two months earlier.
Emily and two maintenance workers had moved everything from the lower drawers.
The documents in her hands were insurance forms.
The late-night photograph had been taken while she was placing towels beneath the damaged wall.
Daniel checked the security archive.
The complete footage confirmed everything.
Once again, Vanessa had selected isolated images and removed the context.
Daniel called the board.
He sent the full recordings.
The accusation collapsed within an hour.
But Vanessa was not finished.
At two in the afternoon, a gossip website published a story.
HOUSEKEEPER AT CENTER OF ASHFORD FAMILY SCANDAL.
The article repeated the necklace allegation without mentioning the security footage proving Emily had been framed.
Emily stared at the headline on her phone.
Daniel saw her face.
“Don’t read the comments.”
She looked at him.
“They already decided who I am.”
Daniel knew exactly what she meant.
People did not need evidence when the accusation fit the story they expected.
A wealthy woman accused a housekeeper.
The necklace was expensive.
Emily was poor.
That was enough.
Daniel called the family communications director.
“Release the footage.”
The director hesitated.
“All of it?”
“The necklace video.”
“The attempted deletion.”
“The statement confirming Emily had nothing to do with the theft.”
Margaret overheard.
“You’re going to make this public?”
Daniel looked at her.
“She was publicly accused.”
“She gets publicly cleared.”
Two hours later, the footage appeared online.
The same websites that had called Emily a thief changed their headlines.
Then another video surfaced.
This one had not come from Daniel.
It showed Vanessa leaving a private bank three weeks earlier.
Beside her walked a man Daniel recognized instantly.
Richard Hale.
The attorney overseeing the Ashford merger.
Daniel stared at the screen.
Now he knew why Vanessa had been so desperate to finish the deal.

She had never been saving the Ashford empire.
She had been preparing to take it.
