Chapter 3 - THE SIGNATURE THAT WASN’T HIS

Daniel read the trust amendment twice.

Then a third time.

The document transferred voting authority over several family companies if Daniel became medically incapacitated.

The temporary trustee named on the form was Margaret Ashford.

The secondary representative was Vanessa Mercer.

Daniel’s voice became almost too quiet.

“Where did this come from?”

Emily answered.

“It was with the bank papers.”

Daniel studied the signature.

At first glance it looked perfect.

Even the slight upward curve on the final letter matched his handwriting.

But Daniel knew one detail Vanessa did not.

He never used his full middle initial on legal documents.

The signature included it.

“It’s forged.”

The security officers exchanged a glance.

Emily nodded.

“I thought so.”

Daniel looked at her.

“You said you heard something in the library.”

Emily slowly sat in one of the wooden chairs.

The memory still made her uneasy.

“Three nights ago I was bringing coffee upstairs.”

“The library door wasn’t closed all the way.”

“I heard Vanessa talking to your mother.”

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“What did they say?”

Emily looked directly at him.

“Vanessa said the documents had to be finished before the engagement announcement.”

Daniel felt the room narrow around him.

He and Vanessa were supposed to announce their engagement at the weekend charity gala.

Only family and close friends knew.

Emily continued.

“Your mother asked what would happen if you refused to sign anything later.”

“And Vanessa said it wouldn’t matter.”

Daniel’s fingers tightened around the forged trust amendment.

“What else?”

Emily hesitated.

“She said once everything was transferred, you wouldn’t be able to stop them.”

Daniel stared at her.

From the hallway came hurried footsteps.

One of the security officers entered.

“Sir.”

“What did you find?”

The officer held a tablet.

“The staff corridor footage was deleted from the main system.”

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“But?”

“There’s a backup.”

Vanessa had apparently known about the household server.

She had not known the camera company stored a second encrypted copy off-site.

The officer opened a recording.

Timestamp.

2:14 a.m.

Four nights earlier.

Vanessa appeared in the staff corridor.

She looked both directions.

Then she used a small key to enter Emily’s room.

She remained inside for eleven minutes.

When she emerged, she carried nothing visible.

Daniel’s face became unreadable.

Emily whispered.

“That was the night after I found the envelope.”

The officer swiped forward.

Another recording appeared.

The next afternoon.

Vanessa met the mansion’s junior security technician near the garage.

She handed him an envelope.

He placed it inside his jacket.

Daniel looked at the officer.

“Who is that?”

“Evan Cole.”

“Get him.”

The officer nodded.

Daniel then turned to Emily.

“You were right to keep these documents.”

Emily shook her head.

“I kept them because I was scared.”

Daniel answered.

“You kept evidence.”

Before Emily could respond, a voice came from the doorway.

“You have no idea what you’re doing.”

Margaret stood there.

Her expression was no longer pale.

It was angry.

Daniel faced his mother.

“Then explain it.”

Margaret looked at Emily.

“You should have taken your money and left when Vanessa offered it.”

Daniel’s head turned sharply toward Emily.

“She offered you money?”

Emily nodded.

“Ten thousand dollars.”

“When?”

“This morning.”

Margaret closed her eyes.

Another secret had escaped.

Daniel stepped toward his mother.

“Why was Vanessa paying my housekeeper ten thousand dollars?”

Margaret did not answer.

May you like

Emily did.

“To disappear before tonight.”
