Chapter 5 - THE FOOTAGE VANESSA THOUGHT WAS GONE

Evan sat in the security room with two guards behind him.
His hands shook over the keyboard.
Daniel stood beside Emily.
Margaret and Vanessa had been ordered to remain in the drawing room.
Neither liked it.
Neither had a choice.
Evan opened a hidden administrative folder.
“I didn’t permanently destroy anything.”
Daniel stared at him.
“You were paid to delete recordings.”
“Yes.”
“Then why keep copies?”
Evan swallowed.
“Insurance.”
Daniel almost laughed.
Not because anything was funny.
Because every liar in the house had apparently expected betrayal from every other liar.
Evan connected a small external drive.
Folders appeared by date.
Emily recognized the days immediately.
The night Vanessa entered her room.
The afternoon of the security payment.
The library meeting.
Daniel clicked the first file.
Vanessa appeared alone in the study.
She placed several sheets of paper over a document carrying Daniel’s authentic signature.
Then she traced the shape onto another page.
Again.
Again.
Again.
Daniel watched without blinking.
The second recording showed Margaret opening the family safe.
She removed the diamond necklace.
She handed it directly to Vanessa.
The two women spoke near a camera without audio.
But their movements were clear.
Margaret pointed toward the servants’ hallway.
Vanessa nodded.
Emily’s stomach tightened.
Daniel opened the third recording.
This one had sound.
Vanessa sat with Evan in the garage.
“You remove the corridor files from Thursday through Sunday.”
Evan’s recorded voice asked.
“What about backups?”
Vanessa answered.
“There aren’t any that matter.”
Daniel looked at him.
Evan lowered his head.
The next file was worse.
Vanessa and Margaret stood inside the library.
Margaret held a folder.
Vanessa poured herself a drink.
“If Emily talks, nobody will believe her after tonight.”
Margaret answered.
“And if Daniel asks questions?”
Vanessa smiled.
“He won’t.”
“He always assumes the simplest explanation.”
“He’ll see a necklace in a housekeeper’s bag and think the problem has solved itself.”
Daniel stood motionless.
Emily looked toward him.
The insult seemed to hurt more than the scheme.
Because Vanessa had not merely deceived him.
She had studied his weaknesses and built the plan around them.
The recording continued.
Margaret asked.
“What about the foundation transfers?”
Vanessa replied.
“Once the merger closes, we replace the missing money.”
“And the trust?”
“Daniel signs after the engagement.”
“If he doesn’t, we already have a version.”
Margaret lowered her voice.
“And Emily?”
Vanessa’s smile disappeared.
“She’ll be gone.”
Emily felt a chill.
Daniel stopped the video.
For several seconds nobody spoke.
Then he turned toward Evan.
“How much did Vanessa pay you?”
“Fifteen thousand.”
“For deleting footage?”
Evan shook his head.
“For deleting footage and giving her the security schedules.”
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“What schedules?”
Evan looked at Emily.
“The nights when the mansion had fewer guards.”
Daniel understood.
The necklace had never been the beginning.
It had been cleanup.
May you like
Something else had already been happening inside his house.
Something Vanessa needed darkness to hide.
