Chapter 6 - THE NIGHT THE SAFE WAS OPENED

The security logs revealed twelve late-night entries into the west wing over three months.

Every entry occurred after midnight.

Every entry used Margaret’s access code.

But Margaret insisted she had not been present for seven of them.

Daniel ordered the corresponding footage opened.

At 1:08 a.m. on May 17, Vanessa entered the family archive room.

She carried an empty leather case.

At 1:26 a.m., she left with the case visibly full.

Two weeks later she returned.

Then again.

And again.

Emily watched Daniel’s expression darken.

“What is stored in that room?”

She asked.

“Original deeds.”

“Stock certificates.”

“Foundation records.”

“Family contracts.”

Daniel paused.

“And documents that should never leave the house.”

They went directly to the archive.

Several boxes were missing.

One cabinet contained empty folders.

Daniel checked the inventory.

Three original property deeds were gone.

So were certificates controlling shares in Ashford Development.

Margaret entered behind them.

Daniel held up an empty folder.

“Where is it?”

She looked genuinely confused.

“I don’t know.”

Daniel studied her face.

For the first time, he believed her.

“You gave Vanessa access.”

Margaret stiffened.

“I gave her my code twice.”

“She used it twelve times.”

Margaret looked toward the camera monitor.

Her confidence vanished.

Daniel continued.

“She didn’t only manipulate me.”

“She manipulated you.”

Margaret did not answer.

Emily watched the realization settle over her.

Margaret had treated Vanessa like a partner.

Vanessa had treated Margaret like another tool.

Daniel called the family attorney.

Then the bank.

Then the company’s chief financial officer.

By two in the morning, several accounts had been frozen.

At two twenty-three, the CFO called back.

His voice sounded strained through the speaker.

“Daniel, we have another problem.”

“What?”

“Someone attempted to pledge Ashford Development shares as collateral four days ago.”

Daniel stared at Margaret.

“Using whose authority?”

“Yours.”

Daniel’s hand tightened around the phone.

The CFO continued.

“The documents appeared valid.”

“They included your signature.”

“Your mother’s authorization.”

“And a witness.”

Daniel already knew.

“Vanessa?”

“No.”

The answer surprised everyone.

“The witness was Emily Carter.”

Emily’s face went white.

“I never signed anything.”

The CFO continued.

“There’s a copy of her driver’s license attached.”

Emily’s breathing changed.

Her wallet had disappeared for nearly an hour two weeks earlier.

Vanessa had later claimed she found it beneath a chair.

Now Emily understood why.

Daniel looked at her.

“She used your identity.”

Emily nodded slowly.

The frame was suddenly much larger.

If the transaction failed, Emily’s name would be tied to forged documents.

If the necklace accusation succeeded, she would already look like a thief.

Vanessa had not selected Emily randomly.

She had been constructing a criminal history around her.

Daniel whispered.

“She needed someone everyone would believe was guilty.”

May you like

Emily answered.

“And she chose the person she thought nobody would defend.”
