Chapter 13 - The Safety Deposit Box

Vivian’s silver key belonged to a private vault at Atlantic Crown Bank.

The next morning, Elena sat inside an FBI interview room with Sofia and Mateo under protective supervision.

Alejandro remained detained.

Rafael was missing.

Samuel Crane publicly denied involvement.

Vivian requested immunity in exchange for evidence.

Federal prosecutors refused full immunity.

They offered protection.

Vivian accepted.

“There’s one condition.”

The prosecutor looked at her.

“What?”

“Elena opens the vault with me.”

At noon, a federal team escorted Elena and Vivian to the bank.

The vault contained one steel case.

Inside were twelve hard drives.

Dozens of paper files.

Three passports under Rafael’s aliases.

Payment records.

Photographs.

And one sealed envelope addressed to Alejandro.

The handwriting belonged to Eduardo Castillo.

Elena stared at it.

“His father wrote this.”

Vivian nodded.

“Two days before he died.”

The letter revealed Eduardo had discovered Samuel Crane was quietly moving company assets through shell corporations.

Eduardo planned to remove Crane.

He also intended to tell Elena about Vivian.

But the most important paragraph concerned Rafael.

Eduardo had discovered Rafael was secretly partnering with Crane to take over Castillo Holdings.

“If anything happens to me,” Eduardo wrote, “Alejandro must know his brother may not be acting alone.”

Elena closed her eyes.

The betrayal stretched back more than a decade.

Then agents examined one hard drive.

A video showed Elena being transported between safe houses.

Another showed Rafael paying doctors.

Another showed Daniel Mercer, Alejandro’s investigator, accepting cash.

Within hours, Alejandro was released.

He walked out of the federal building to find Elena waiting.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then she stepped into his arms.

Alejandro held her carefully.

“I’m sorry.”

She shook her head.

“No more apologies for things they did.”

He kissed her forehead.

Across the street, reporters shouted questions.

Alejandro ignored them.

Then his phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

Rafael’s voice whispered.

“You always get rescued.”

Alejandro stopped.

“Where are you?”

“You want the truth?”

“I’ll give you one.”

“What truth?”

Rafael laughed.

“Ask Elena why Vivian never killed her.”

The call ended.

Alejandro looked at his wife.

Elena had heard enough to understand.

Her face changed.

“What does he mean?”

Behind them, Vivian slowly stepped from the federal building.

And Elena asked the question that would change everything.

“Why am I alive?”
