Chapter 8 - The Woman From the Clinic

The black SUV crashed through the partially closed west gate.

Security guards rushed toward it.

The driver did not stop.

The vehicle skidded across the rain-soaked courtyard and slammed sideways near the entrance.

A woman stumbled out.

She wore hospital scrubs beneath a soaked coat.

Thomas emerged from the passenger side.

Alejandro rushed outside.

The woman looked at Elena.

“Mrs. Castillo.”

Elena stepped backward.

“No.”

The woman raised both hands.

“I’m not here to hurt you.”

“You held my babies while they drugged me.”

“I know.”

Elena’s face collapsed with rage.

“You told me Alejandro abandoned us.”

“I know.”

The woman began crying.

“My name is Dr. Isabel Vega.”

“I worked at the clinic.”

Rafael appeared in the doorway.

“Get her.”

Two guards moved forward.

Alejandro stepped between them.

“You touch her, you answer to me.”

One guard hesitated.

That hesitation told Alejandro something important.

Not everyone remained loyal to Rafael.

Dr. Vega pulled a waterproof pouch from beneath her coat.

“I copied patient records before Rafael ordered the clinic destroyed.”

Alejandro stared.

“Destroyed?”

“There was a fire six months ago.”

“Three employees died.”

She looked at Rafael.

“It wasn’t an accident.”

Rafael’s expression remained calm.

“Careful, Doctor.”

Isabel ignored him.

“I treated Elena after her abduction.”

“I also delivered the twins.”

Elena grabbed Alejandro’s hand.

“She knew everything.”

Isabel nodded.

“At first I believed Elena was receiving psychiatric treatment voluntarily.”

“Vivian showed us legal paperwork.”

“Then I realized the documents were forged.”

“Why didn’t you call police?”

“They had my son.”

Silence.

Vivian looked away.

Isabel continued.

“My son disappeared after I threatened to report them.”

“For two years I cooperated because they promised he was alive.”

Thomas spoke quietly.

“We found him.”

Isabel turned.

“What?”

“He’s safe.”

Isabel collapsed against the SUV.

Thomas helped her stand.

Alejandro looked at Rafael.

The situation was breaking apart.

Rafael knew it too.

He reached inside his jacket.

Alejandro saw the movement.

“Don’t.”

Rafael pulled out a handgun.

Everyone froze.

He pointed it toward Isabel.

“You should have stayed hidden.”

Vivian suddenly grabbed his wrist.

The gun fired.

Glass exploded above them.

Rafael shoved Vivian aside.

“Whose side are you on?”

Vivian stared at him.

For the first time, real fear crossed her face.

May you like

“Not yours anymore.”

Then every exterior light on the property went black.
