Chapter 3 - The Children No One Knew Existed

Alejandro could not move.

He had negotiated billion-dollar acquisitions without hesitation.

He had faced armed men during overseas business disputes.

Nothing had prepared him for a little girl asking whether he was her father.

Elena wrapped both children against her.

“This is Sofia.”

She kissed the girl’s forehead.

“And Mateo.”

Alejandro slowly crouched.

The boy studied him suspiciously.

The girl stared with open curiosity.

“How old are they?”

“Five.”

Alejandro’s chest tightened.

Elena had disappeared three years earlier.

“You were pregnant.”

Elena nodded.

“I found out two weeks before I disappeared.”

Alejandro covered his mouth.

He remembered those weeks.

Elena had seemed distracted.

She had bought vitamins.

She had stopped drinking wine.

He had assumed she was exhausted from charity work.

“Twins.”

His voice broke.

Elena nodded again.

“I was going to tell you on our anniversary.”

Vivian appeared in the corridor.

“What a touching reunion.”

Alejandro rose.

“You kept my children underground.”

Vivian crossed her arms.

“Technically, Elena kept them underground.”

Elena looked horrified.

“That’s a lie.”

“Is it?”

Vivian glanced toward the children.

“Ask them who closes their door every night.”

Mateo immediately hid behind Elena.

Alejandro stepped toward Vivian.

“You have five seconds before I call the police.”

Vivian smiled faintly.

“You should.”

Alejandro paused.

That answer surprised him.

Vivian continued.

“Call them.”

“Tell them you found your missing wife and two secret children imprisoned beneath your mansion.”

“Then explain why Elena’s fingerprints are on every lock.”

Alejandro looked at Elena.

Her face went pale.

“I had to lock us inside.”

“Why?”

Elena looked toward the ceiling.

“Because sometimes she brought people down here.”

“What people?”

Elena struggled to answer.

Vivian did it for her.

“Doctors.”

Alejandro turned.

“What doctors?”

“The kind your wife desperately needed.”

Elena shook her head.

“They weren’t doctors.”

Vivian’s smile returned.

“They had licenses.”

Alejandro pulled out his phone and called his head of personal security.

“Marcus.”

No answer.

He called again.

Nothing.

Then he noticed something disturbing.

His phone had no signal.

Vivian lifted a small remote.

“I installed signal blockers downstairs.”

Alejandro lunged toward her.

Vivian pressed a button.

Heavy steel doors slammed shut at both ends of the corridor.

The lights changed from yellow to red.

Mateo screamed.

Vivian stood safely beyond the sealed glass partition.

“You should have listened when everyone told you Elena was gone.”

Alejandro stared at her through the glass.

May you like

Vivian leaned closer.

“Because now I have to make all four of you disappear.”
