Chapter 16 - The Question That Broke Them

Elena smiled faintly.

“Neither of you trusts the other.”

Crane’s expression hardened.

“Sign.”

“You poisoned Eduardo.”

Elena looked at Crane.

“And Rafael helped cover it up.”

Rafael stepped forward.

“I didn’t know Crane poisoned him.”

“That’s not what the video shows.”

Rafael froze.

Elena continued.

“You were there.”

“I was twenty-seven.”

“And jealous.”

“And stupid.”

“But I did not agree to murder my father.”

Crane laughed.

“Now he grows a conscience.”

Rafael turned toward him.

“You said the dose would scare him.”

Crane’s smile vanished.

Elena had found the crack.

“You lied to Rafael.”

She looked at him.

“Just like you lied to Vivian.”

“Just like you lied to everyone.”

Crane raised a gun.

“Enough.”

Then a child cried inside the building.

Elena moved forward.

“Sofia!”

Crane pointed the weapon at her.

“Stay where you are.”

Rafael grabbed his arm.

“She signs first.”

Crane shoved him.

“You’re finished.”

Rafael stared.

“What?”

“You were useful when Alejandro trusted you were dead.”

“Now you’re evidence.”

Rafael finally understood.

Crane intended to eliminate everyone.

A gunshot echoed from somewhere behind the clinic.

Crane spun toward the sound.

Alejandro emerged from the darkness.

“Step away from my wife.”

Crane fired.

Alejandro dropped behind a concrete wall.

Federal agents moved through the rear perimeter.

Rafael attacked Crane.

The two men crashed against a table.

Elena ran toward the building.

She found Sofia and Mateo locked inside a treatment room.

“Elena!”

Vivian appeared from another hallway.

“What are you doing here?”

“I know this building better than anyone.”

Together they broke the children free.

Outside, shouting intensified.

Then flames suddenly erupted near the storage wing.

Crane had ignited fuel.

“He’s burning the evidence again.”

Vivian picked up Mateo.

Elena grabbed Sofia.

They ran.

A section of ceiling collapsed behind them.

At the exit, Elena looked back.

Alejandro was fighting Rafael near the courtyard.

Crane was gone.

Then Vivian noticed a vehicle speeding away.

“Crane.”

Alejandro ran toward Elena.

“Are they okay?”

“Yes.”

He wrapped all three in his arms.

Rafael lay injured but conscious.

Federal agents surrounded him.

As they handcuffed him, Rafael looked at Alejandro.

“You still don’t understand.”

Alejandro stared.

“What?”

Rafael coughed.

“Crane doesn’t want the money anymore.”

“He wants Castillo Holdings destroyed.”

“Why?”
