Chapter 19 - THE VERDICT

Six months after the dinner at the Vance estate, the case reached its conclusion.
Richard Cole accepted a plea agreement involving financial fraud and conspiracy charges.
He agreed to restitution and surrendered control of Northstar Meridian.
Victoria entered a separate agreement.
Her attorneys had argued that Eleanor directed much of the scheme.
The evidence supported that claim.
But Victoria had still planted the necklace.
She had still leaked false accusations.
She had still participated knowingly.
There were consequences.
Eleanor fought the longest.
She blamed Richard.
Then Victoria.
Then Arthur.
Then Julian.
Then Elena.
Eventually, the documents left her nowhere else to turn.
The court imposed its judgment.
The financial penalties were severe.
Her access to Vance family assets ended.
Several civil claims remained unresolved.
There were no cheers when the hearing ended.
Elena stood outside the courthouse beside Thomas.
Reporters waited behind barriers.
Julian stood several steps away with Arthur.
Victoria exited through another door.
Eleanor appeared last.
For a moment, she and Elena saw each other.
Eleanor walked toward her.
A court officer watched closely.
Eleanor stopped several feet away.
“You got everything.”
Elena shook her head.
“No.”
“You kept your father.”
“You kept your reputation.”
“You kept your money.”
“And Julian still looks at you like you are the only person in the world.”
Elena’s expression softened.
“You still think this was about what I have.”
Eleanor laughed bitterly.
“What else is there?”
Elena looked at Thomas.
Then Julian.
Then Arthur.
Then back at Eleanor.
“People who tell you the truth before you destroy yourself.”
Eleanor’s face changed.
For one second, the anger disappeared.
Something emptier remained.
Elena continued.
“You had those people.”
“Arthur warned you.”
“Julian defended you for years.”
“Even Victoria followed you because she believed you knew what you were doing.”
“You turned every disagreement into proof that someone was against you.”
Eleanor looked away.
Elena did not feel victorious.
She simply felt finished.
“I hope one day you stop needing enemies.”
Eleanor said nothing.
She walked away.
Thomas came to Elena’s side.
“You okay?”
“Yes.”
Julian approached.
He stopped at a respectful distance.
Elena smiled.
“You can come closer.”
He did.
Arthur cleared his throat.
“I believe there is one final matter.”
Everyone looked at him.
Arthur pulled a small velvet box from his coat.
Elena stared.
“Arthur.”
He held up both hands.
“It is not the necklace.”
She narrowed her eyes.
“Open it.”
Arthur obeyed.
Inside was Elena’s wedding ring.
The ring she had left on the dining table six months earlier.
Arthur had kept it safe.
He handed the box to Julian.
Julian looked at Elena.
Then he closed it.
Elena blinked.
“You are not going to ask?”
“No.”
“Why not?”
Julian slipped the box into his pocket.
“Because when you want it, you will tell me.”
Thomas smiled.
May you like
Arthur smiled.
And slowly, Elena did too.
