Chapter 14 - THE BOARDROOM

At 9:00 the next morning, the Vance Holdings boardroom was full.

Twelve directors sat around the polished walnut table.

Arthur occupied the chairman’s seat.

Eleanor sat at the opposite end with two attorneys.

Victoria was absent.

She had been released pending further investigation but instructed not to contact witnesses.

Julian sat beside Arthur.

Elena did not attend.

This fight belonged to the Vance family.

At least at first.

Eleanor opened with confidence.

She claimed Arthur’s judgment had deteriorated.

She cited the police incident at his home.

She cited media chaos.

She cited Sterling Global’s growing ownership of Vance debt.

Then she argued that Arthur’s personal relationship with Elena had compromised his independence.

Several directors looked uncomfortable.

Arthur listened without interruption.

When Eleanor finished, he spoke.

“You are asking this board to remove me?”

“Temporarily.”

“And appoint whom?”

“A crisis committee.”

“Chaired by you?”

Eleanor smiled.

“If the board considers me appropriate.”

Arthur nodded.

“Very well.”

He looked toward the general counsel.

“Play the recording.”

Eleanor’s smile disappeared.

Julian’s recording filled the room.

Her own voice explained the plan.

The forged documents.

The necklace accusation.

The intention to blame Elena.

The temporary leadership structure.

Nobody moved.

When the recording ended, Julian looked at his mother.

She stared at him.

“You recorded me.”

“Yes.”

Her voice shook.

“You betrayed your own mother.”

Julian answered quietly.

“I told myself that sentence for years.”

He leaned forward.

“It is how you controlled me.”

Eleanor stood.

“You think Elena will take you back for this?”

Julian’s face tightened.

“This is not about getting Elena back.”

“For once, this is about doing the right thing even if I gain nothing.”

Arthur watched his grandson carefully.

Something in his expression changed.

Not pride.

Not yet.

But recognition.

The general counsel placed several documents in front of the directors.

“We also have evidence of unauthorized disclosures, falsified corporate instruments, and undisclosed related-party transactions.”

Eleanor looked around the table.

“You cannot believe them.”

One director answered.

“We believe the documents.”

Another added.

“And the recording.”

The vote took six minutes.

Arthur remained chairman.

Julian remained president, but voluntarily surrendered unilateral signing authority pending an independent audit.

Eleanor was removed from every Vance family office and committee position.

Then the doors opened.

Thomas Sterling walked in.

Elena followed him.

Eleanor laughed bitterly.

“Of course.”

Thomas placed a thick binder on the table.

“I apologize for interrupting.”

Arthur looked at him.

“What is that?”

Thomas answered.

“An offer.”

Eleanor’s eyes widened.

Thomas continued.

“Sterling Global will refinance the debt Northstar attempted to weaponize.”

Julian frowned.

“Under what terms?”

Thomas looked at Elena.

She answered.

“Market terms.”

“No board seats.”

“No control rights.”

“No special privileges.”

Arthur studied her.

“Why?”

Elena looked around the room.

May you like

“Because I will not become the thing they accused me of being.”

For the first time since the scandal began, the boardroom became completely silent.
