Chapter 7 - ELENA SPEAKS

At noon, Elena walked into Sterling Global headquarters through the front entrance.
No private garage.
No hidden elevator.
No attempt to avoid the cameras waiting outside.
Reporters shouted from behind barricades.
“Mrs. Vance, did you steal the necklace?”
“Are you divorcing Julian?”
“Did Sterling Global plan to acquire Vance Holdings?”
Elena stopped.
Thomas remained ten feet behind her.
He did not speak.
This was Elena’s moment.
She stepped toward the microphones.
“Last night, I was accused of stealing jewelry during a private family gathering.”
Cameras clicked.
“That accusation was false.”
“A recording now in police possession shows the item being deliberately placed among my belongings.”
Reporters began shouting questions.
Elena raised one hand.
“I am not going to discuss evidence that belongs to an active investigation.”
She looked straight into the nearest camera.
“But I will say this.”
“My family name does not make me innocent.”
“My husband’s family name does not make them guilty.”
“Evidence decides the truth.”
The shouting quieted.
“And evidence is exactly what I asked for last night.”
A reporter called out.
“Why did you hide that you were Thomas Sterling’s daughter?”
Elena paused.
“Because I wanted a life where people judged me before they saw my last name.”
She glanced toward the cameras.
“Last night taught me that some people will judge you no matter what name you use.”
The clip spread within minutes.
Public opinion shifted almost immediately.
The calm response made the earlier sensational headlines look reckless.
But Victoria was not finished.
At 2:18 p.m., she posted a video online.
She sat against a plain white wall.
Her eyes were red.
Her voice trembled carefully.
“My family is being threatened by one of the most powerful men in America.”
Elena watched from her father’s office.
Victoria continued.
“Elena lied to us for years.”
“She infiltrated our family.”
“When we discovered inconsistencies, her father arrived with police officers.”
Thomas stared at the screen.
“She is good.”
Elena nodded.
“Very.”
Then Victoria delivered the line she had clearly saved for the end.
“And I believe Elena has been secretly working with her father to take control of Vance Holdings.”
The video ended.
Thomas looked at Elena.
“You know that is what they want us to deny.”
“Yes.”
“Because denial keeps the story alive.”
“Yes.”
Thomas nodded slowly.
“So what will you do?”
Elena closed the laptop.
“Nothing.”
Her father looked impressed.
Elena stood.
May you like
“Victoria wants a public fight.”
“I am going to give her a courtroom instead.”
