Chapter 11 - Everyone Had a Version of the Truth

Evelyn left the security office alone.
She carried Jonathan’s folder with her.
Daniel followed.
“What did Richard send?”
She stopped.
“How did you know it was Richard?”
“You looked at your phone immediately after seeing his photograph.”
Evelyn studied him.
Daniel was observant.
Maybe too observant.
“He wants to meet.”
“Do not.”
“You told me not to meet Jonathan.”
“And I was right to be cautious.”
“But not right about everything.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“That is fair.”
Evelyn appreciated the answer.
Nathan would have argued.
Daniel admitted limits.
Still, trust was now something she intended to verify.
Not feel.
At eight the next morning, the board of Grant Meridian held an emergency meeting.
Nathan arrived with three attorneys.
Clara did not attend.
Evelyn joined remotely from Hartwell’s offices.
Nathan looked perfectly composed on-screen.
That was his talent.
Crisis became performance.
He addressed the directors.
“My wife is emotionally distressed after an unfortunate personal incident.”
Evelyn almost laughed.
Nathan continued.
“Certain allegations have been exaggerated.”
A board member interrupted.
“Nathan, nineteen questionable authorizations are not an exaggeration.”
Nathan nodded solemnly.
“I agree.”
Then he looked directly into the camera.
“That is why we must determine whether Evelyn herself authorized transactions she now regrets.”
There it was.
The attack.
He presented emails.
Documents.
Messages.
All showing Evelyn directing aggressive transfers.
Daniel whispered.
“Forgeries.”
Evelyn nodded.
Nathan continued.
“I do not want to say this publicly.”
Then he did exactly that.
“My wife has struggled privately for years.”
Evelyn’s body went cold.
Nathan displayed the fake psychological evaluation.
Several directors looked uncomfortable.
Nathan’s voice softened.
“I protected her.”
Evelyn closed her eyes for one second.
Protected.
That word was almost beautiful in its cruelty.
He had built the weapon.
Now he called the concealment protection.
Nathan continued.
“I ask the board to suspend any action based solely on Evelyn’s allegations until she receives appropriate evaluation.”
One director finally asked.
“Are you saying Mrs. Grant is mentally unstable?”
Nathan paused carefully.
“I am saying I love my wife.”
Evelyn opened her microphone.
“No.”
Nathan stopped.
Everyone looked at her.
She continued.
“You are saying exactly what you need them to hear while avoiding the sentence you might later be sued for.”
Nathan’s face tightened.
Evelyn held up Jonathan’s folder.
“You forged emails portraying me as unstable.”
Nathan shook his head.
“Prove it.”
“I will.”
She leaned closer to the camera.
“And when I do, every person who repeated your story will know you used my marriage to manufacture a defense against fraud.”
Nathan’s smile disappeared.
Then Richard Hale entered the boardroom.
Everyone turned.
He was physically beside Nathan.
Evelyn stared.
Richard placed a folder on the table.
Nathan looked surprised too.
Richard sat.
Then he said something nobody expected.
“I have evidence.”
Evelyn’s heart pounded.
Richard continued.
“Evidence that both Nathan Grant and Jonathan Hartwell conspired to misuse trust-backed funds.”
Nathan stood.
Jonathan cursed beside Evelyn.
Then Richard looked directly into the camera.
“And evidence that Evelyn was being prepared as the scapegoat.”
For a moment, Evelyn felt relief.
Until Richard added.
“But Daniel Mercer knew about the plan eighteen months ago.”
May you like
Evelyn slowly turned toward Daniel.
He did not deny it.
