Chapter 17 - The Original Agreement

Nathan produced no documents.

Federal rules prevented him from handing Evelyn anything directly.

But he gave her a location.

A safety deposit box registered under her maiden name.

Evelyn left without promising anything.

Daniel begged her not to chase another Nathan trap.

She went anyway.

Inside the box was an envelope.

Her father’s handwriting.

A contract.

Dated four years earlier.

Signed by Nathan Grant.

Signed by her father.

The agreement authorized Nathan to create external asset vehicles.

Northstar.

Other companies.

But only for one purpose.

To identify which Hartwell insiders were willing to steal from the trust.

Evelyn read the page three times.

Nathan had originally been part of her father’s investigation.

Daniel looked stunned.

“This changes the beginning.”

“Not the ending.”

She was right.

Later amendments showed Nathan deviated from the plan.

He began moving money for himself.

He recruited Jonathan.

Richard.

Outside intermediaries.

He discovered the trap.

Then decided to own it.

Evelyn understood.

Nathan had started as bait.

Then became the predator.

Another sealed letter explained more.

Her father had chosen Nathan because Nathan was ambitious enough to attract corrupt insiders.

He believed Nathan loved Evelyn enough not to betray her.

He had been wrong.

The most painful line came last.

I mistook Nathan’s love for you as stronger than his hunger to become me.

Evelyn closed the letter.

Nathan had not wanted money alone.

He wanted Hartwell.

Her name.

Her authority.

Her father’s legacy.

He wanted to become the man who once made him feel small.

Daniel received an urgent call.

Federal agents had located Jonathan.

He had entered the United States through Canada.

He wanted immunity.

In exchange, he would reveal Evelyn’s father’s location.

Evelyn attended the meeting.

Jonathan looked terrified.

“Your father is alive.”

“I know.”

“He is in Maine.”

“Where?”

Jonathan hesitated.

“He moved himself.”

“Why?”

“Because Nathan’s network found Geneva.”

Evelyn clenched her jaw.

“Where is he?”

Jonathan gave the address.

A remote coastal house.

Federal teams moved immediately.

Evelyn went with them.

They arrived before dawn.

The house stood above the Atlantic.

Lights off.

Door unlocked.

Inside, the fireplace was still warm.

Tea sat on a table.

One cup.

Fresh.

“Dad?”

No answer.

Agents searched the rooms.

Upstairs, Evelyn found his cane.

She picked it up.

Still warm.

Her father had been there minutes earlier.

On the desk lay a note.

Evelyn, if you found this, you finally stopped believing the people you love more than the evidence.

Her throat tightened.

Below that.

Good.

Then.

Now find Nathan’s last account before he does.

A number followed.

Singapore account seventy-three.

The account Richard had shouted about during his arrest.

Daniel searched the records remotely.

Then called Evelyn.

His voice was urgent.

“That account does not belong to Nathan.”

Evelyn stared at the ocean.

“Who owns it?”

May you like

Daniel answered.

“You do.”
