Chapter 8 - The Recording

The hidden camera inside the bedroom was smaller than a coin.
It had been installed behind an air vent facing the bed.
Evelyn stood in the doorway while technicians photographed it.
Daniel remained beside her.
“You do not have to stay.”
“Yes, I do.”
She needed to see it.
She needed to understand exactly how far Nathan had gone.
The technician traced the camera to a private cloud server.
Access logs showed thousands of uploads.
Some had been deleted.
Many had not.
“Can we recover them?”
“Probably.”
Daniel looked at Evelyn.
“We may need law enforcement.”
She nodded.
“I know.”
Her phone rang.
Nathan.
She declined it.
He called again.
Declined.
Then a voicemail arrived.
Daniel advised her not to listen.
Evelyn did anyway.
Nathan’s voice filled the quiet room.
“Evelyn, stop this before you create something neither of us can repair.”
She almost laughed.
Then Nathan continued.
“You are being manipulated by people who want Hartwell divided.”
His tone softened.
The old Nathan.
The charming Nathan.
The man she had once loved.
“Come home.”
Evelyn stared at the hidden camera.
“I am home,” she whispered.
The message continued.
“Clara lied.”
Evelyn’s expression did not change.
“Jonathan lied.”
Then came the sentence that mattered.
“And Daniel Mercer has wanted control of the trust for years.”
Evelyn looked at Daniel.
He heard it too.
“Interesting.”
“Is it true?”
Daniel did not answer immediately.
That bothered her.
Finally, he said.
“I was approached three years ago about becoming chief counsel.”
“By whom?”
“Your uncle.”
Jonathan’s father.
Evelyn stared at him.
“And you never told me?”
“I declined.”
“That was not my question.”
Daniel exhaled.
“No.”
Evelyn felt another crack appear.
Everyone had secrets.
Perhaps not equal secrets.
But secrets.
She walked downstairs.
A technician was reviewing server backups.
Suddenly he called out.
“Mrs. Grant.”
Evelyn approached.
“We found a protected folder.”
“Open it.”
“It requires a separate encryption key.”
Daniel asked.
“Can you identify the owner?”
The technician typed.
“Yes.”
He turned the screen.
Account holder.
NGrant.
Secondary recovery contact.
JHartwell.
Evelyn stared.
Nathan and Jonathan.
The connection was older and deeper than anyone had admitted.
The technician managed to recover a file index.
Dates appeared.
Video recordings.
Audio.
Documents.
One filename stopped Evelyn cold.
EHG_CONSENT_ARCHIVE.
Daniel looked at her.
“What is that?”
“I do not know.”
They opened the metadata.
The folder had been created four years earlier.
The same year Evelyn had briefly considered leaving Nathan.
Then the technician discovered one accessible audio file.
He played it.
Nathan’s voice.
“You do not need her actual consent.”
Jonathan answered.
“As long as we can prove she appeared to authorize it.”
Evelyn stopped breathing.
Nathan spoke again.
“We are not removing Evelyn.”
A pause.
“We are removing the obstacle.”
Daniel immediately stopped playback.
The room fell silent.
Evelyn looked at him.
“Play the rest.”
The technician shook his head.
“That is all we recovered.”
Evelyn stared at the waveform.
Then another recovered filename appeared.
May you like
CONTINGENCY_AFTER_DEATH.
Nobody spoke.
