Chapter 13 - The Press Conference

Nathan stood beneath the Grant Meridian logo.
Cameras flashed.
Reporters shouted questions.
He looked devastated.
That was deliberate.
He wore no tie.
His collar was open.
His face carried exactly enough exhaustion to suggest a husband in crisis.
Evelyn watched from Hartwell’s conference room.
Nathan began.
“This has been the most painful night of my life.”
Evelyn felt nothing.
“My wife, Evelyn, has been under extraordinary pressure.”
Daniel muttered.
“He is creating the record.”
Nathan continued.
“Recent events have made it clear she needs privacy, rest, and professional support.”
A reporter shouted.
“Is Mrs. Grant mentally ill?”
Nathan lowered his eyes.
“I will not betray my wife’s medical privacy.”
Evelyn almost admired the construction.
He denied nothing.
Confirmed everything.
Protected himself.
Nathan continued.
“For the stability of both Hartwell Trust and Grant Meridian, Evelyn will step away from decision-making temporarily.”
Evelyn’s assistant looked horrified.
“He cannot announce that.”
“No.”
Evelyn stood.
“But he just did.”
Nathan then introduced Richard Hale.
Richard appeared beside him.
Evelyn’s blood turned cold.
Richard spoke.
“We are reviewing governance procedures.”
Daniel stared.
“He is with Nathan.”
Evelyn shook her head.
“Or pretending to be.”
She had stopped accepting appearances.
Nathan concluded.
“I ask the public to give my wife compassion.”
Evelyn picked up her coat.
Daniel frowned.
“Where are you going?”
“To the press conference.”
“That is exactly what he wants.”
“No.”
Evelyn looked at the television.
“He wants me hidden.”
Twenty minutes later, the reporters were still gathered when Evelyn’s car stopped outside.
The crowd erupted.
Cameras swung toward her.
Nathan was halfway through answering another question when someone whispered in his ear.
His face changed.
Evelyn walked toward the podium.
Nathan stepped forward.
“Evelyn.”
She ignored him.
He reached for her arm.
She looked at his hand.
He withdrew it.
The cameras captured everything.
Evelyn stepped to the microphone.
Nathan whispered.
“Do not do this.”
She looked at him.
“You announced my medical leave without speaking to me.”
“You need help.”
Evelyn turned toward the cameras.
“My name is Evelyn Hartwell Grant.”
The crowd went quiet.
“I am not on medical leave.”
Nathan looked furious.
“I am not resigning from Hartwell Trust.”
More flashes.
“And I have never received the psychiatric diagnosis my husband displayed to the Grant Meridian board this morning.”
Reporters began shouting.
Evelyn raised one hand.
“The document is being examined as part of a broader forensic investigation involving suspected forgery, unauthorized transfers, and misuse of trust-backed capital.”
Nathan stepped forward.
“That is enough.”
Evelyn looked at him.
“No.”
She removed her wedding ring.
The crowd reacted immediately.
Nathan stared at it.
Evelyn placed it on the podium.
“For ten years, Nathan benefited from my silence.”
She looked directly into the cameras.
“He mistook privacy for permission.”
Then she turned toward her husband.
“That ends today.”
Nathan’s face went white.
But before reporters could ask more questions, a black federal vehicle pulled up behind the crowd.
Three agents stepped out.
Nathan stared at them.
One walked directly toward the podium.
“Mr. Grant.”
Nathan’s hand tightened.
“We have a warrant.”
The cameras exploded with flashes.
May you like
But the agent did not arrest Nathan.
He turned instead toward Richard Hale.
