Chapter 12 - Daniel’s Silence

Evelyn ended the board session immediately.

She walked into Daniel’s office and closed the door.

“Eighteen months.”

Daniel remained standing.

“Yes.”

The answer hit harder than denial.

“You knew.”

“I knew Nathan was discussing ways to challenge your authority.”

“You knew he was manufacturing evidence against me.”

“No.”

She stared at him.

Daniel continued.

“I knew he was trying to build a conflict case.”

“And you did not tell me.”

“I told your father.”

Evelyn froze.

Her father had died fourteen months earlier.

“What?”

Daniel swallowed.

“Your father asked me not to tell you.”

Evelyn felt grief collide with anger.

“Why?”

“He was already ill.”

“That does not answer me.”

“He believed Nathan would expose himself if we watched quietly.”

Evelyn stepped back.

“My father used me as bait.”

Daniel’s face tightened.

“He believed he was protecting the trust.”

“What about protecting me?”

Daniel said nothing.

That silence hurt.

Her father had always loved Hartwell.

Maybe too much.

Even more than family.

Evelyn looked out the window.

The city below continued moving.

People crossed streets.

Cars stopped at lights.

Ordinary life.

Inside the office, her marriage and her family were both becoming evidence.

Daniel spoke carefully.

“Your father created a contingency.”

Evelyn turned.

“What contingency?”

“A sealed directive.”

“For what?”

“If Nathan attempted to remove you through incapacity proceedings.”

Her pulse accelerated.

“Where is it?”

“In the trust archive.”

Daniel opened a secure cabinet.

He removed a sealed envelope.

Evelyn recognized her father’s handwriting.

For Evelyn only.

Her fingers shook as she opened it.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

Evelyn read silently.

Her father apologized.

He said he had underestimated Nathan’s resentment.

He warned that Nathan had cultivated allies inside Hartwell.

He said Evelyn should trust documents before people.

Then one paragraph stopped her.

If Nathan ever moves against you publicly, do not assume he is acting alone.

Below that.

The person closest to exposing him may also be protecting himself.

Evelyn looked at Daniel.

He looked wounded.

“I never saw the letter.”

She believed him.

Maybe.

The final page contained a list of coded account numbers.

Daniel recognized one.

“Those are Hartwell custodial accounts.”

They pulled the records.

Payments emerged.

One account had sent six transfers to a private consulting company.

The owner was Richard Hale.

Evelyn felt sick.

Another transfer had gone to Daniel’s former law firm.

Daniel looked stunned.

“I did not know about that.”

Evelyn looked at him.

Now everyone had money connected to the scheme.

Nathan.

Jonathan.

Richard.

Even Daniel’s former firm.

Her father had been right.

Documents before people.

Then her assistant entered quickly.

“Mrs. Grant.”

“What?”

“Nathan Grant has called a press conference.”

Evelyn checked the time.

Nine minutes.

Her assistant looked pale.

“He says he is going to announce that you are taking a medical leave from Hartwell Trust.”

May you like

Evelyn stared at the television screen as Nathan stepped toward a bank of microphones.

Then he smiled.
